Recently I have discovered that not only is my latest edition quirky, she can be down right rude... Since Ruby has entered the household we have discovered the following: 1- She is a counter surfer 2- She will try to break in to the dog food container if presented with an opportunity 3- She steals tomatoes and devours them in 20 seconds or less 4- She burps louder than Will and I combined 5- She has served as an extraordinary professor of pilfering and pillaging to our 9yr old Havenese, Ali I'm not sure if there is some sort or puppy Emily Post book that we could read her or what. She makes Luca look like a gentleman...which he is not! I think I was most shocked when Will told me that Ruby taught Ali who has never shown any interest in tomatoes...how to select the ripe ones from a bush and discreetly grab them when no one is looking... That's right Ruby doesn't take the green tomatoes... Ali has preferred to stick with the cherry or plum tomatoes though. I think they are more bite sized for her Ruby goes for the Beefeaters and finishes off every meal with a gigantic burp...actually I think it could be classified as a belch it is SO LOUD! Do any of you have vegetable connoisseurs? How about impressive escape artists or food thieves…? I know Ruby is related to Kristine’s Sybil, after all they are cousins so I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised by her "impressive talents". |

Our tomato lover is my son's min pin Dino. Although, we are saved as Travis has bought his own house and Dino went with him!
Dino used to do the same as Ruby - go out in the garden and eat them. He didn't eat just the small ones either. Instead he went from plant to plant, taking big bites out of many....... He didn't stop with that though. I always can lots of tomatoes, salsa and such. I set the done jars in rows on the floor on a towel to dry and cool off - usually overnight. I would check the seals as they were cooling and put any that didn't seal in the fridge for immediate consumption. I also remove the rings after they are cooled and sealed. In the mornings, I was finding jars that had broken seals. Then I was finding some with the lids actually off and the level of the tomatos was lower! I did a little spying, and found Dino was using his teeth like a can opener and breaking the seal and prying the lids off - just so he could have a little bedtime snack!! |
oh my dawn - that would have made great video |
Our Bailey has been known to snack in the garden. He prefers the strawberries, but if strawberries aren't in season he's pulled radishes up out of the ground and eaten them. The radishes are pretty spicey and make him puke, but he does it anyway. So we put a fence up to keep him out of the garden - just one of those short fences from Home Depot to get the "keep out" point across. That worked for a while, but just last week I heard this sad, pathetic barking from the yard. I went out to discover that Bailey had managed to jump the fence into the garden, but couldn't figure out how to get back out! Silly puppy! I went back into the house to put on my shoes so I could walk over and free him, but when he saw me leave he panicked, jumped back over the fence, and ran across the yard so fast that he actually beat me through the door Hopefully he'll remember it as a bad experience and stay out from now on. |
Yes, yes, multiple generations of vegetable and fruit stealing pups, even the St. Bernard who at 15' of garden garlic........boy did he reeeeeek!
One thief was so darn cute she ended up on local TV. I had a garden show and after filming one day the cameraman had extra tape when he spotted Stella in the raspberries, hiding (she was still a pup) and munching on raspberries. She ended up on the night's news as background for the credits. Abbott and Stella would pick my berry, currant and lower fruits before I could get to them. Every watch a Newfoundland spit cherry pits? He could, tho it was more a drooly drop. Jack is our present veggie and fruit boy. He loves his salads, actually my salads. I've yet to find anything he won't eat.......he may swallow directly if he's unsure, but ususally everything gets a few chews before it disappears. I'm careful, but so far he's been a cast iron tummy pup. Fortunately Jack doesn't have the coordination to counter surf. Otherwise I'd have to padlock the bread box and refrigerator. |
I have veggie thieves as well. See this post http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?t=21417 |
Lucali wrote: Hello all,

You cannot go around making these false and terrible accusations regarding what I'm quite sure is the most perfect sheepdog puppy ever born. It's got to be the Havanese. Oh, wait, she's Luca's daughter. What was I thinking? Five minutes after we got off the phone the other night - remember I was making that pasta salad as we spoke? - her mother stole the broccoli off the counter. Clearly also HER sire's fault. She left with me with some sorry looking stalks. Are you coming to sheepiefest? Are you bringing The Legacy with you? Her mommy will be there, though I think grandma will stay home. I took her to Sybil's runthru tonight and when I returned to the car after signing Sybil up Belle was just vaccuming up the last morsels of my training treats. This was clearly just a slight lapse in perfection. Kristine & Belle ("it's always the stud dog's fault") |
Ha ha ha ha! Hm so Ruby's obsession with broccli really came from Liz???
I will not be attending Sheepiefest with the motley crew but everyone will be at the hearding event on Sunday...hang on to your tomatoes folks! I think Will will have his camera too so hopefully he will take some neat action pictures! |
duffy would rather eat carrots then a good dog bone.. |
