Taking out the "fluff"

After two years of encouraging Bingley's hair to grow and be the BEST coat there is . . . I have started to strip out his undercoat in order to keep myself healthy and sane at the end of my pregnancy. After being on my feet all day at school I was coming home with swollen toes and ankles and another couple hours on my feet grooming wasn't an option. So I've moved Bingley to a once-a-week grooming job and while I line groom like normal I also take a comb and comb out his beautiful-finally-becoming-gray-wool . . .

We considered shaving him but our breeder believes it will be faster to get him back in show coat when we want him to be if we only strip the undercoat. It is a relief on me to have less grooming, and I know I won't have time for it after she's born for a while, but it is a sad state of affairs. Commiserators welcome . . .

We went the shave route - and it is 11 months into regrowth. It is about the same length now and much more managable. It was a real nice break having only the whites to groom. Chewie still has one patch on the top near the back that is losing the last of the puppy fluff. One mutant patch still hanging on!
Gotta love the slow blooming boys!!!

I was wondering how you were doing with the pregnancy - almost to baby time!!! :D :D :D :D

oops - not logged in at work.
I say shave it! You don't need the stress of worrying about the coat right now. Enjoy your baby moments. His coat will grow back sooner than you think, and I'm sure it will be lovely. Stripping undercoat is still a lot of work. There is plenty of time to show him. :D
I'd just clip him. You'll have to keep up with undercoat like crazy and it'll be more fighting with mats as the shorties grow in-- not something you'll want to have t worry about with a baby around!
I agree. Shave him! I would have died in the first few months if I had had to worry about Barney's coat...
Whatever to make things easier!! I think things are so much easier when you take the undercoat out. Bingley is always gorgeous.

Soooooooo... how is your pregnancy going? Excited? You don't post more. We better be "one of..." the first places you go to post pics and give us an update on mommy and baby ...and happy daddy. :)
Shave it. You will have a much better coat when it grows back in. And you can go for quite awhile without any major grooming. then work back into it a little at a time as the coat starts to grow & get thicker.
I agree shave him or puppy cut. I tried the route you are and it seems to be just as much work.

I'm soo sorry I haven't been posting more often!! I have been absolutely enjoying my pregnancy but it seems like every spare second I have I'm getting ready for the baby or spending time with Bingley while I can still lumber around - lol. This summer I knit a ton of things, began setting up the room, that sort of thing, and now I'm just exhausted after teaching school all day! I don't mind - our little girl is listening to TONS of music every day!

Thanks for all the input about Bing . . . I'll definitely keep you up to date on whats happening with him! And I'll try and upload a few pictures of recent days to see if you still recognize me! Only 5 more weeks!
I sit on an old quilt to comb out the girls. Easier on my feet and back, easy to clena up.

And I did it that way when I was pregnant and the kids were little. I always considered it my time with the dogs - and time that my husband could spend alone with the kids.
I "divided" the sheepies into fourths and tried to do a full quarter every evening. A back leg + that side up to the front leg, the front leg, chest and head on that side. With two sheepies, that meant that they were fully combed out every 8 days.

Hang in there!
I did shave Obe down to an inch last August and he has almost grown back to the same length. If I had to do over I would have just brushed him after the camping trip. You have a different story being pregnant. So what ever would be best for you is what's important. Obe's undercoat is removed and I line brush on Sunday. The rest of the week we just do touch ups, unless he goes swimming then I'm brushing.
Emily take him to what they call a "Puppy Clip" shorter and manageable then while your preggo. Better then a complete shave off and easier to manage and will grow back in length when you are ready without loosing the volume then.

You can take him to about 2-3 inches all over and grooming will be a breeze then and not take as long to whip through him when needed.

Glad to hear being preggo is going well, look forward to hearing when the munchin arrives :D
Bing was doing so well in the ring, I can understand why Edy suggesting just removing undercoat! If there's any way you can do that, please do. I'd hate to see him shaved down. I'm thinking of the German boy Zorro and how long he's taken to be back in shape.......for different reasons, of course.

And I can also understand shaving. Jack is growing out after his early summer shave and his winter underwear is coming in 8O I'm considering shaving him down again and buying a parka for his outside times. One extreme, no undercoat MO to Jack, "where's your skin???"

Oh, by the way, you are beautiful pregnant! Waddle away sweetie.
