who's afraid of the big bad....STEAM MACHINE

Remy is :o)

For the first part of the day, she waited in the kitchen while I steamed our upper level carpets. Not a sound, all was good. So later in the day I did our lower level, again she was kept off the carpet until I was done. Around time for bed the lights are off and I have it packed up ready to take back to Home Depot. She is now with me in the basement, something caught her eye, and low growls proceeded. I thought someone at the door, maybe she heard my husband coming home. I get up, look around nothing. Again she paces, starts barking and being quite agitated. So I go with her to investigate, and the only thing around in the shadows is the steam machine. I turn on the light and have her come take a closer look...she gets into a low almost belly creep, and moves ever so slowly to the big bad machine. Once there, she smelling and being very very cautious, and then looks at me. I actually said alowed it's a machine, it won't hurt you, she wagged her tail, and all was well in her world again.

Too funny! Does she do that to any other electronics? Or is it just that particular steam machine?

Karen :)
It was just that machine, but it was off and sittingin the dark. She is to funny when it comes to things outside at night too, like someone who makes a snowman...that spooks her. She must investigate but it can take forever as she creeps up on it. You never know if your dealing with a friendly snowman or not
Ben does the low belly creep & growl with our potted plants outside. Now that he's gotten a haircut I am hoping he'll see that they are kind and gentle plants and won't bother him. Unfortuately he walked into one of the clay pots a few weeks ago so he probably thinks the plant jumped out and attacked him. He's so nutty it's unbelievable sometimes!
That's so funny, does he go around to avoid that spot now...to avoid another "attack"?
All of our sheepies' antics make me wonder if what I've sometimes heard about is true - can they truly "see" things we can't? Drez does the same thing sometimes. She'll just be laying there and all of a sudden her head shoots up and she starts her low growl and I swear she's looking at something. Wish I could see it!
Chris
Harley (My Shepherd) will follow me around when I am vacuuming and try to attack the vacuum. I usually put him outside when I vacuum to avoid having to yell at him to get out of my way every two seconds. He will grab it from the front and start shaking it. Crazy dog!!
This part is new and has only been with the new Vaccum that I got two months ago. When I am done he will tip toe (this is the funniest thing I have ever seen) around the vacuum and all around the room where I leave the vacuum (in slow motion). I guess he is expecting it to attack back. He knew the old one didn't attack..maybe the new one looks meaner... I don't understand it... The new one is quieter than the old.
I don't really know too much about the breed, but my Shepherd is one DUMB DOG!!!

Elissa
I know what you mean Chris... They are sleeping peacefully and suddenly out of the blue they growl or bark like crazy.... It's creepy.

Half of the time, it's because a cat is passing by on the other side of the park, or because the garbage man is arriving to the gate... That's about 200 feet away! I have no idea how they do it.
Hi,

I think each time I tried to respond to this post I would laugh so hard the tears prevented me from seeing the keyboard!

Give Remy a little belly rub for me and tell her I think she's such a brave girl!!

Marianne and the boys
I have two Austrailian Shepherds that absolutely hate the vacuum cleaner too. Pud doesn't seem to mind it at all. Both of my Aussie's will bite the vacuum when I am trying to use it. I usually put them outside before I vacuum, it is kind of hard to push it around with two dogs hanging off of it. Elissa's post sounded so familiar, one of mine will also do the sneak around the vacuum and get to where Mom is once it is cut off.
We got our stationary bike this week, and Lennon and Sofa are really anxious when we get on it... The bark, and bark and bark, and bark.... The try to come close to it when it's just sitting there, but if you make the slightest sound, the bolt downstairs! It's just hilarious!
My parent's Old English Sheepdog Merlin totally freaks out when he hears the mist shoot out of an inhaler when someone uses one and frantically runs away from the inhaler user. He also cannot stand the sound of nebulizers used to treat asthma. Good thing Merlin does not require any kind of inhaler.
We recently came to realize Ben can't stand buzzing noises. Don't ask me why - I was probably doing something goofy with the kids, (I'm a nutty mom) - but I made a buzzing noise and Ben started flipping out. First he ran in a little circle and then flopped on the ground and rubbed his ear like crazy - kind of like he had a bad itch inside. We thought it was odd and tried it again a few minutes later and he did the same time.

Of course, always being nervous about the kids or pets being sick, I immediately thought maybe he had an ear infection. Nope, all clear.

So, my husband wasn't home during the 'buzzing' session. I got home from work last week and he was laughing hysterically. There is a home directly behind our's which is under construction and is almost done. When he got home from work he let Ben out back to go potty like always. Apparently the workers were using a tile cutter - which has a very loud vibrating noise. And, because it wasn't a constant noise (breaks between cutting each tile I guess) it was freaking Ben out. He would squat to go and then the buzzing would start and he would flop to the ground and rub his ears. The noise would stop and Ben would start walking around to find a new special place to pee and darn if the buzzing would start again. After three tries I guess he had to go so bad he finally went...but the cutter started mid-stream  and he started shaking to the point where he ended up going partially on his foot.

What a goof. Not much more we can say!

But, it kind of works at dinner when he's looking for food. Now that we know we just let out a two second buzz and he immediately leaves the table area to escape the noise. The true test will be on hot dog night.... :D
Betsy I also have an Aussie that attacks the vacuum cleaner and mop.
As soon as I open the broom closet door she is there ready to attack.
All my fault because when she was a puppy I would make the mop go in a wide circle for her to chase because it tired her out. She was the most energetic puppy we ever had. My sheepdog will go in another room when I vacuum he is afraid of it. My Aussie is ok with regular vacuuming its just the attachments she attacks. She also follows you around with the push lawnmower not attacking mind you just trots behind and my Sheepie Mardi doesn't like mower either he hides behind something till done. Before he wouldn't even come outside but he's graduated to hiding.
I'm like Maryann laughing at this post . All the dogs antics are so very funny.
Dancer is a very orderly sheepie. She likes things to be put back where they came from. As a pup I tried knocking over chairs and moving things around to see if she would get used to it, and she did for the most part, except for one baby gate. One of our plastic baby gates fell on her when she was little, she was climbing it, and when it fell it didn't hurt her but the noise and surprise of it scared her. Now, if that gate is not exactly where it is supposed to be, leaning against a wall in the kitchen, but only one specific wall, she will growl at it and step towards it, grab it with her teeth and try to knock it over and run. It is actually quite funny to see. This little idiosyncrasy actually helps us now. The garbage is Dancer's favorite thing to get into, but we bought a rubbermaid bin for it, with a lid that she quickly learned to take off. So now, I place the broom standing on top of the lid. She knocked it off once and will not touch it anymore unless someone forgets to put the broom back up. LOL
BigBen your story had me in stitches, that is soooooo funny. Everyone else too, our crazy dogs and their imaginations. Quite often we sit and wonder what Remy is dreaming about, cause her feet are kicking and she's letting out these little barks/yelps but muffled. When my husband saw her do that for the first time, he was sure she was having a seizure or something, so he woke her up....now we know she just in a deep dream...probably chasing Amy the cat.
Farley barked at a pickup truck once. I was walking him after work one night and he was pre-occupied with some scent. When he turned around to look at me I guess he also saw the truck and it startled him. I had to walk him slowly up to it to smell the bumper. "See Farl - it's just a truck. It's ok." Farley: "Hmmm - I'm not so sure. Is it authorized to be here?"

I also hate that Home Depot commercial on TV. The one with the lady testing door bells. EVERYTIME my dogs go wild and run for the front door, barking all the way. It's gotten so that I lunge for the remote to mute it before the actress "presses" the button.
