change from Science Diet I/D
I need suggestions for the best food for Corky 9ys & sensitive stomach. Fergus 6yrs & sensitive stomach. Shelby 10 years can eat anything, nothing bothers her. I want to feed them the best food I can for age & needs. Would love guidance. I read the charts & my heard is spinning. I need advice that is simple for my poor overloaded brain

| The same diet is available in Purina EN or Eukanuba low residue. dogs seem to love either of them equally. I personally dont like science diet either and when my pups needed senstive tummy food I had them on Low Residue. At the emergency clinic we feed EN most often or there is also Royal canin potato and white fish which seems to go over well but it smells like a fishing boat, not so good for your senses. I can do some more research for you if you want to. |
| I justlove Wellness Simple Solutions. It's for allergy sufferers, and after trying Nutro, Iams, Pro Plan Sensitive Stomach, Natural Balance, and a list of other popular dog foods ...this has been the only one outside of Science Diet z/d ultra (allergies) to sit well with her. Plus, it's a good food! |

| I don't have any with sensitive stomachs, but I have heard good stuff about the dry Wellness and California Natural for dogs with tummy issues. Both are high quality and limited ingredient foods. I have used them and my dogs loved them. I just fed them for other reasons! |

can i feed all 3 of mine the same food? Guess what ??? Science Diet has ALWAYS given my sheepies gas! The Purina EN actually gave my dogs diarrhea. We are happy with Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach. We had switched to Kirkland but, they had alot of soft stool (I still think it is a good food just not for us!) I also use the Wellness Simple Solutions for Quin with his HORRID allergies. It works better than anything else we have tried... There are some foods that are good for all life stages. Canidae has one but, I have heard they changed their formula. I am always wondering about food! Good Luck~ |
| Owen's breeder feeds all of her dogs ProPlan Sensitive Stomach with excellent results. I'm probably going to switch all of the boys to that for awhile when Owen grows out of puppy food. Bear and Clyde have solid tummies and can change easily. The only requirement we have is a large sized kibble because they throw the tiny stuff all over the place and it hurts (me) when I step on it! |
Wellness Core salmon variety has been a life saver for us! It's a wheat and wheat-gluten free kibble. Our next step would have been for me to cook for Fozzie. Foz had been on too many brands to mention. Each one caused various forms of diarrhea. Within a week of eating the Wellness Core, solid poops!!!!!  This has now continued for a few months. WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT. |

| I feed both Pro Plan Sensitive Skin & Stomach & Pro Plan Adult Lamb & Rice. My boy who has the the sensitive intestinal tract has not had a bout of diarreah (sp?) in 11 months since I changed him to the Pro Plan Sensitive Skin & Stomach. As for Purina not being good food.....I think maybe what you were hearing was about their "lower end" foods such as puppy chow & dog chow (the cheaper ones in their line). If you ever have a chance to go thru the Purina research facility & see the process they go thru producing & testing their foods , I think you would have a different opinion. I am highly impressed with the reasearch they put into their products. |
I kinda felt bad we were feeding a food rated "4" until I saw the ones listed in the lower categories. I guess it could be worse. 
We refused to put Panda back on Science Diet c/d because of the ingredients seemed inferior (in our uneducated opinion). They have it rated as a "1". Corn was the #1 ingredient, fat #2, chicken by-product meal #3. I just couldn't understand how that could be good for a dog to be on for a lifetime to control a urinary ph imbalance so we opted to add an acidifier to her meals instead. We don't have sensitive stomachs (they receive a variety of foods) but we do suspect raw hide has caused a problem on two occasions so it's been banned. |
| In regards to the question whether purina had changed their formula, I am pretty sure that they havent but having said that they have a varying scale on their foods. I am one of their nutritional advocates at the clinics and what I have learned from them is that they h ave tiers as to how good each food is. For example, and this also goes for most food companies, if it says on the bag "chow" anywhere, like "dog show, cat chow" it is a low grade food, not very good ingredients. foods like mighty dog, kibbles and chunks, etc for cats and dogs and your general common buy bags of food are your average quality foods. The good/moderate quality food is your straight purina brand food like beneful, alpo bags. The high quality foods are the perscription diets and your ultra high quality foods are pro plan, purina one, and your performance foods. Sometimes they group the average and good foods in the same group depending on who you talk to and they may also put the perscription foods in with the ultra quality foods. You will also see that these foods vary greatly in price when you change categories so if you every wondered why this one is more expensive that the other one but are both purina, that would be why. I hope this helps a bit. And I am not trying to be pushing the purina, I didnt mean to come over like that because I personally feed Iams/Eukanuba to my kids. For sensitive stomach/skin I loved and so do most dogs the Eukanuba Low residue food but it is perscription. Hope this helps [/quote] |

| usually because there is a medical reason as to why your dog needs to be on it but I agree and so does my vet/friend/ former coworker that any dog can really be on the low residue. I guess mainly its because the company has to actually specifically formulate the food as opposed to the petstore brands. I guess they have to pay the researchers somehow right?? |

It's the only time we've had hope when it came to dealing w/her allergies. We only switched b/c we needed a food that put more weight on my dog who seems to NEVER gain weight even w/4 crazy heaping full cups of food at 56lbs (and no medical problems). |

My dad worked for Ralston Purina when I was a kid. I'll never forget the plant tours etc. But dad always came home stinking to high heaven. Unfortunately this is another plant that has moved out of the country.  at least the one where my dad worked. |
