Old English Sheepdog on Craigslist in Nazareth,PA.

Hi All,
I happen to be browsing Craiglist and I came across an ad for an 4 yr old neutered OES for adoption. The ad said that he would not be good with cats, small dogs or small children. I contacted the owner and mentioned to her to contact NEOESR. The owner wrote back saying that the rescue will not take him unless his shots are updated and she does not have the money for that right now. I was wondering if any of the other rescues in the area may be able to help her. I told her that I may be able to give her the names of some others. Nazareth, PA is near the Allentown/Bethlehem area and also Philadelphia area.
I have attached the link to the ad, hopefully it will work.

I just saw this post and I also just sent an email to the poster with questions. Will let you know what they come back with.
Hi Chris,
I thought of you when I saw this ad but I did not know if you were quite ready to adopt. She did respond back to me again that she just wanted to make sure that he got into a loving home, that he is a good boy. I also e mailed her again with questions regarding him. I really do not want to adopt another dog with four dogs already plus I have cats but I just thought I would get a little more info on him. Sometimes there are misunderstood pups labelled the wrong way. Let me know if you hear back from her. Also if you want her e mail address just pm me and I will give it to you.

Jack
Well, she responded to my first email, and here's what she said.

I am looking to rehome him because I have cats and smaller dogs. He is to agressive with the cats and the smaller dogs he is rough with. I thought he would get better but he has not. I have not done any professional training with him. He has not been crated since he was a puppy. He is not destructive if left alone. He comes when called and he knows the word "no". He does not prefer one gender over the other. He is used to living with women but we do have men over and he is fine with them also. He has never been around small children, my daughter is grown, so I do not truthfully know how he would be with them. He is good with my german shepard and really ok with the smaller ones it is just outside he gets to rough with them. He has agression with the cats. He does not drool at all.

I had asked how he was with grooming - she didn't say. But something's just not right here. She has not trained him "professionally" so "no" may be the only thing he understands. And if she's had him since a pup and KNEW he wasn't good with cats and smaller dogs, then either 1) why did she get the cats and smaller dogs, or 2) if she had them first and then found this out, why would she keep the dog for 4 years? Then she says he's really ok with the smaller ones, just outside he's too rough with him. Well hello!!!! He's a SHEEPDOG! That's what they do. I emailed her back with more questions, including how far behind on his shots is he, how is his general health and which vet does she take him to.

Can anyone think of any other good questions to ask? I've asked about aggression (humans and animals), dominance, grooming, destructiveness, health. I'll keep everyone updated. Thanks!
Maybe you could ask if you could speak to the
vet or groomer(if he has been to one)
They can give you a true idea of temperment.
If you are close, go visit take a brush, walk him around the neighborhood, see how he is with the other pets, ask to see his vet records. See how he responds to you and the owner.
Here's her second response:

He is good with being groomed. The groomer I take him to usually does not do OES because most are very nasty but she does him. He has never been aggresive with a person and we have different people in and out. He does not jump when people come in but will bark until he sees that we are ok with them in the house. He does bark alot when he is outside at one of our neighbors. He will cry when I leave the house but then he is fine. He has snapped at the cats but not at the little dogs with them I believe that could be his herding. He sleeps in the bedroom and will try to get in the bed but I tell him no and he sleeps on the floor. He does like to ride in the car. I can take things out of his mouth and I can take his food bowl away while he is eating. He is at least 1yr behind on his shots. His hips have not been checked. His eyes are fine. (brown not blue) The last vet he was to is Warren Animal Hospital in Phillipsburg, NJ.

He walks ok on a leash. He will not pull but he will tangle you up in the leash. I have had him since a pup and I had two smaller dogs when I got him and he never really like the one but is ok with the other then I got another, a pomeranian and he barks alot and I do not think Bear likes that at all. I have had cats since getting him but then I was doing rescue and something happened there and I have more. He was ok with the ones that were here but the ones that I brought in from rescue he his aggressive with.

I asked if we could go see him, interact with him in his own environment but haven't heard back yet. Something's just not right here. She's gotten more involved in cat rescue but doesn't keep the dog(s) up to date on shots? He would be a work in progress. If he tangles you up in the leash, he does not walk well on a leash, in my opinion. If he growls and snaps at the cats, that's a problem. Having already had one dog (before Drez) that was nasty and bitey and that we just could not break him of, I don't want to be scared around a dog again. Plus, with my back problems (that I didn't have when we got Drez), I can't take a chance of a dog pulling me down.

I just don't know - I'm so torn. I feel like I have to get this dog away from where he is, but it doesn't sound like he's in any real danger. We'll see how I feel when we actually see him.

Stay tuned!!
Good luck, Chris. :D
Maybe this boy should go into a foster home to be observed first by people with lots of experience. Have you tried contacting Madeline Erickson? She may be able to help you. As far as being 1 year behind on shots at the age of 4......maybe the only real concern would be a rabies shot. I vaccinate yearly (other than rabies which we do every 3 years) the younger dogs. As they get older my vet & I decide which ones are really necessary. I would think a good rescue group would get this boy's shots updated.
She told Jack that the rescue wouldn't accept him without up-to-date shots and that she doesn't have the money to do it right now. Not sure which rescue she spoke to, if indeed she did speak to one.

The saga continues . . .
Why doesn't she contact an animal group to help pay for the shots?
I am confused most rescues will update a dogs immunizations.
At the age of 4, I would be more worried about
heartworms than vaccines.
Did she contact OES rescue or an all breed?
Just wondering...
I can ask her those questions, but right now I'm waiting to hear back from her on my request to come see him in his current environment. Thought for sure she'd say yes for today (since it is a week-end) but I haven't heard anything all day. Hmmmmmmm . . .
I don't ge tthe shots issue. Most poeple I know no longer give annual immunizations because they are not necessary.
Unfortunately, I don't think our adopting Bear will work. I sent the owner an email on Sunday asking if we could come visit, see him in his own environment, and she never answered me until yesterday. And then she said she had to think about letting us come to visit him because of all the other animals she has in the house, and how they react when strangers are there. Huh???

Because of a sad situation we had before Drez, we won't adopt a dog unless we can see them, interact with them first. She offered to take Bear back if it didn't work, but that's just not an option for me. Once an animal enters our doors, they're ours - period. It wouldn't be fair to us or Bear if we felt like we had to return him.

I don't get the feeling that Bear is in any danger where he is, it's just that there are too many other animals there. And I also get the feeling that the owner really doesn't know much about sheepdogs so when he doesn't act like her German Shepherd or her small dogs, she doesn't understand why.
There's another dog we're investigating who seems to need a new home more than Bear, so we told her no. Pity really.
Too bad those people are so stupid about OES. I am sure you will make a great home for the right sheepie...maybe the poor girl in your area.

Poor Doggie.

Sounds like a good decision Chris. I hope the other dog is a better fit but don't hesitate to pass if he/ she is not either. I have no doubt that you will find the sheepie that is right for you and Dale and you will know right away when that happens. Happy hunting!
This does sound fishy...too many animals, not enough money for vaccinations, doesn't want you to see the environment. I may be jumping to conclusions, but she sounds like she might be someone trying to rescue other animals and is getting in over her head. Can you call another rescue or animal control to check this out? I didn't know if you even know where she is located. The sad thing is the sheepie is having his world turned upside down. :(
In our area the Humane Society and even our local health department offer free rabies vac. on a regular basis. Maybe this is something she should look into. Also would rescue accept the dog and have them vacinated. I know I for one would offer to donate for something like this.
I'm confused about this as well. All my current dogs are rescues and shots were given routinely before adoption by the rescue group ( 2 Humane society and one NOESR). I've also had three other dogs over the years from various rescues locally who were all vetted and UTD on shots before I was even allowed to adopt them - The cost was rolled into the adoption fee.
Not being able to see the dog's environment is extremely suspicious, especially since she has been escalating her cat rescue efforts. I wonder how many animals she actually has there? :x
