Not only that ,but the house I just purchased comes with a dog as well!!!! An ancient 11 year old Lab whom was going to be brought to the shelter as the owners are now moving into a condo. I felt responsible for this dog as it was due to purchasing "his" home that he would end up at the shelter in his senior years. Nope, couldn't let that happen so I said the dog could stay with me...okay if you're counting that would make 3 dogs...plus puppy. Cough cough. I don't want a puppy! I only want senior animals. Besides I already have 18 special needs bunnies, 9 cats, 2 guinea pigs , 1 domestic mouse and 3 dogs....sigh. My heart is broken as Merlin loves the little thing and just yesterday he brought some smiles to people as we walked with puppy flanked on both sides by his two big brothers. I awoke the other day to find "Puppy" with his head on my chest and his face close to mine so I smelt puppy breath. If you had told me that would ever happen I would have thought you'd be insane. A pitbull laying on my chest , kissing my face!Oh why was he born this breed? My heart breaks for the little fellow and I'm trying so hard not to get attached. But who would take him and why? How can I take a dog of this breed when I'm involved in rescue? I could just hear people say, "Isn't that a Pitty?" Could I ignore news stories and judge this little one as a puppy who needs a home? Stay tuned. Marianne |

Ahem... congrats on the new puppy!
Marianne, you are a dog send to all four leggeds in need! Can't wait to hear about the new pups antics! Lucky dog...good to see you! |
Aww Marianne don't lose your head! The puppy sounds really cute (isn't any puppy of any breed so cute?) but he's not going to fit in... or is he? |
Marianne, this puppy is really a sheepie in a pitty suit ! |
Marianne! I'm so shocked coming from someone so otherwise enlightened like you! You're judging a 8 week old puppy because he happened to be born looking like a "breed" that has been thoroughly villified by the media and which is killed as a matter of course in many "enlightened" shelters? Or maybe I misunderstood and you're teasing us?
Honestly, his best bet is if you can find a pitbull rescue and let them handle it. They're used to the deadly prejudice this type of dog has to live with and nobody else seems to want to give these most misunderstood dogs a chance. Sweet family pets are being banned and killed across the US and parts of Canada due to people's incredible ignorance. Frankly, an 8 week old puppy raised right by somebody who knows the "breed" is probably going to turn out to have a better temperment than half of the OES owned by people on this forum. They're not natural born killers and when people have succeeded in banning them and breeds that look like them and the rotties and the dobes and what not along with them, the type of people who want a "bad ass" dog will just find another breed to destroy. Let's hope it's not ours, eh? If not rescue, suggest you try to find him an agility home in a community where his life isn't at risk. They tend to be incredibly smart, fabulously athletic dogs who thrive when given a job. Oh, wait, where have I heard that before? Belle and Mad and I have competed against some incredible Am Staffs. We WISH we were athletic like that Mad used to spend her spare time at trials playing with a staffy she roughly her age. Sweetest little bitch you'd ever want to know. She does obedience and rally too. Working dog, needs a working home and an above average experienced owner. Sounds very cute. Kristine |
Pits can be some of the sweetest dogs, believe me. The stories abound of vicious dogs mauling people and other animals, but you seldom hear the stories of the ones that love their families completely. Pits were bred to be nannies, the same thing we call our loving sheepies. I would only be concerned because you don't know his background. Inbreeding can cause issues, as we all know. Most of the stories we hear on the news are dogs that have been raised to be the way they are. Even some of Michael Vick's dogs have been rehabbed.......and many thought they were hopeless. Give him a chance and ignore the masses. Take this as an opportunity to raise a pit that will exemplify the good qualities of the breed, not the bad. Can you tell I'm against breed "racism" as I call it? If you truly cannot bring yourself to adopt this little darling, please look carefully to find him a loving home, which I know you would, as I have read many of your stories. Good luck and Gob bless! |
I think someone like you owning a pitbull would be a wonderful service to the breed. It's an excellent chance to lead by example and break down the prejudices that exist. |
The concern I'm sure is that he may not fit your pack when he's older. You might look at it this way...
For now, you'll be giving him a great start and wonderful socialization... maybe for yourself or another family later on. For now, the little guy needs a home and if he's currently fitting in and YOU want to keep him, I'd go for it. My sister had the sweetest pb-mix... she was a shelter dog so her history was unknown. She would froth over other dogs but eventually came to be friends with a wiener dog and co-exist with a spaniel. She was excellent with her two young children. You know that a big part of the picture is also upbringing. If you choose to keep him, I'd consult with others that know the breed well on how to best raise him. Maybe even get him his Caine Good Citizenship and help him to be an ambassador for the breed as others have said. Good luck with your decision. Ummmm... of course we want pictures no matter what you decide |
If you wanted .....I know you would raise a wonderful puppy no matter what breed he is. You of all people can do what ever you put your mind too.
Maybe this puppy could help the older lab You for sure could be a spokeperson for the breed |
I think its a shame when people assume Pit Bulls will all be aggressive dog killers when they grow up. An 8 week old Pit puppy is the PERFECT opportunity to show the world how great this breed can be if raised and trained properly; to obey commands from his owner and show respect to other dogs!
If anyone can do it, Marianne, it's you! From all I've read, you have the biggest heart on the planet when it comes to animals. Surely your heart isn't closed to this puppy just because of the negative hype about this breed? Teach your Pit Puppy to be loving, and he will be loving. Teach him to obey his commands, and he will obey his commands. But if you give him up based on his breeds "history" then you run the risk of someone else taking him in, and not training him well. If you cannot manage it based on your current pet work load (and it does sound like its "all full at the inn") then I'd make sure he went to Pit Bull rescue. That way they can place him in an appropriate home where he'll get the right kind of training and guidance. |
So did your son "find" the puppy on the streets or something. If so my only concern would be your other dogs and the pit puppy having parvo and not showing signs yet. hopefully not the case but if so I would just watch out. If he is healthy you could definitely raise him to be a great dog! I know a lot of really nice pits. good luck |
Hi,
Thanks everyone for your comments and of course your advice. Mad Dog, you are absolutely right I'm ashamed to admit that I do have reservations regarding a dog of this breed.Although in the past I also advocated for them but never had thoughts of owning one myself. Saying that, I also look down at this puppy and see him for what he is...a puppy. Cute, mischeivious and totally innocent. In the suburbs where I live, only those who have Grow Ops have pit bulls -Grow Ops - aka drug houses. Okay so maybe people will think I have one but perhaps you guys are right...I could advocate for the breed and show people that they are good family pets too. Even ordinary people like me can have them. All the while I have been telling my son I don't want to keep him that he must return him to his "friend" as that's what my son has been telling me where he got him from. So three weeks have gone by and in the meantime I've taken "Puppy" to my vets for his innoculations and checkup. Made arrangements for training and future neutering....but I'm not keeping him. Nope....!!! In the meantime this little one is stealing my heart...but I'm not keeping him! Marianne |
Can we see a picture of you new puppy please??? Has the black lab met him yet? |
ah ohhhhhhhh seems like a done deal to me !!! |
I'm a sucker for a pitbull that needs a home- so Marianne I think you are making a great decision to "not keep him".
Pictures asap! |
Yup.....not keeping him!
>>Repeats mantra to self...over and over again. However, did make an appointment for his rabies innoculation in 2 wks. But I'm not keeping "Puppy" you understand. Nope....not keeping him!.......No matter what you guys think....I'm not keeping that adorable little fellow that greets me daily with kisses to my face and is already smart as can be. Nope not keeping that adorable little pup....sigh. Did I mention my son gave "puppy" a name? But I'm not keeping him!....Nope ...not keeping him.... >>>repeats mantra to self.... |
Okay....I'm going to take puppy to the offleash park to socialize him and yesterday he was invited to join my vets puppyplay time....met 3 chihauhaus.
I should also get him a nice new collar, but I'm not keeping him yah know.... Marianne |
Marianne, at 8 weeks, does he have enough of his shots to be hanging with other dogs? I'm anxiously awaiting Owen's last set so we can start taking him places but I've been a paranoid mom and keeping him only in our house and yard (with me cleaning the yard constantly!). Owen's says he's jealous of your puppy's adventures!
What his name anyway? |

We're jealous too! And I'm "one of those crazy people" who carries puppies in until at least a few weeks after their last puppy shots. I also put a newspaper on the scale at the vet's office before weighing them. They know I'm nuts |
Hi,
Puppy is now almost 12 weeks old..(I've been puppysitting him since he was 8 wks) one last set of shots and he's good for a while. He's only been around others who have also had their shots...thanks for worrying however. That's smart advice as pups can pick up parvo easily from other dogs poop - especially at offleash parks. Butterstotch...Owen??? What have I been missing??? New pup??? Is he that adorable little fellow in your avatar? Marianne and Puppy Snoop dawg |
You must've missed my posts in the pictures area! Yup, Owen joined our family almost 2 weeks ago. He'll be 10 weeks old tomorrow.
http://forum.oes.org/viewtopic.php?t=21579 I actually need to get some new posed shots of him because he's growing so fast. He's already so much bigger. He's gonna be a solid boy. He's another little food piggy like Clyde, too! |
