my flea treatment has also been for ticks and other pests; so we did it through last winter. But we do stop for our cats.
Something else that helps; we treat our lawn for fleas. But our dogs also don't play in the lawn. If they did, I might be a little more concerned about it. |
Here in Louisiana flea treatment is year round as the temperatures never get cold enough for long enough to kill the fleas. I would recommend doing it year round. |
Wyn has a good point. What part of Georgia are you from? Your decision will vary, depending on if you are in Savannah, or the North Georgia Mountains. |
I'm in Northern GA area. I think I will continue the flea treatment year round because I just don't ever want her to have a flea on her. I also want my house to remain flea free. I was just wondering if it was pointless to keep giving the treatments but I see it is needed. Thanks for the replies! |
I live in the bitter cold of upstate NY and I use flea treatment YEAR ROUND. Flea eggs can harbor in your rugs, baseboards and even in your cars and pop out months later.
So I don't think it really matters where you live, but in the southern states your risk is even greater. I would treat year round. |

we were thinking about getting a cabin in North Georgia for a week with the girls when our schedule calms down. Want to do a puppy play date?!? |
I don't live in north Georgia really, I live around the Athens area. I wish I lived way up there, it's beautiful! |
I agree with Ginny, fleas can be lurking indoors as well as out. Be ever vigilant. |
My parents live in Clayton, Ga very north east corner of the state. I was there last winter and I dont think I used any flea meds during my stay from Nov-Mar. If I did it was only once at the most. But my mother did say that this summer there the fleas were horrible. |
I think to be on the safe side, the answer is yes ...but from the vets I've talked to, a lot of other factors can come into play. Do you live in a forest area (woods in your backyard, lots of nature, etc) and do you take your dogs into those areas when out walking? None of the vets I know have been too concerned about those few winter months unless your dog has had a past or existing problem/signs of fleas/ticks in your area. BTW, I'm in TX so am not familiar with Georgia.
My maltese currently is just on heartworm. Summer months, she's usually on something for fleas though (just not this year). She's never had a flea or tick, and is usually in someone's arms if outside. Vet is fine with it. Our OES is on something year round. Cats are on nothing at the moment, but are also inside animals. When I was in college, they were on flea medicine in the summer months. |
