Herding at the National - MN '08

Spoke to WI rescue person, Jan Guthrie, as well as Dawn/Got Sheep and early reports are that almost all of the OES entered passed the HCT.

That includes Jan's rescue girl, Sadie, Dawn's Chewie, LeAnne's Martha, Judi's Harry (whom I'm told was QUITE vocal in his enthusiasm  ) and Val's Heart!!!!!

I'm not sure who else from the forum had dogs entered, hopefully someone will add to the list, and I don't know the results for the herding trial as it was still going on when Dawn and Jan had to leave to get ready for CGC testing, so hopefully someone will report on that. I know there's lots of great video and pictures out there 8)

A wonderful kick-off for the national. Sure we'll be hearing more from people later.

Way to go guys....
Nita was there with Nelson as well but, I haven't heard anything!
If she was there (hey, Dawn!!! How come you didn't mention Nita? I know she was planning on entering) I'm pretty darn sure they passed, so add Nelson to the list.

I need to ask more pointed questions...

I'm sure some of them will start getting online as soon as they have a chance.

Mostly everyone had lots to say about Harry...? 8O

Good things. Loud things. But good

I have pictures, and have my laptop. Unfortunately I don't have a port for my card, nor the cable for my camera. :(

Yes, Nita and Nelson passed! :D
We had a great time and our OES did so well. I know the 1st one not to pass was a border collie......

Yes....

Are you going to tell people how to do so or do they need to guess? :sidestep:

well they need to guess -

But here is what I did:Remember I don't ususallly do things the easy way.

I asked in my agility classes and obedience classes if anyone was herding and made connections locally that way, I did web searches, asked on this forum if anyone had suggestions and pretty much spent an extended six months trapsing to 4 different instructors till I found one I liked. I do believe the OES performance web site has a few instructors (I think mine is up there) listed.

I read lots of web sites and I also asked on the performance list for a book recommendation (Virgil Holland - and yes still only partially read).

One thing I would do differently - go to a few trials and audit some seminars. This is not like agility or obedience where you can get in the ring and do like the instructor does with your dog next to you. If those are college courses, herding is a master's or a PhD (although I thought a lot of my PhD course works was easier than my Master's work, but see how distracted I get?). there is much more basic handler knowledge needed to begin in herding. Not that advanced agility doesn't have nuance - I mean some people forget to keep their shoulders pointed in the direction they intend to move - but all of that is also involved in herding and the basics are - well foreign to most people.

In addition, many herding instructors are - forceful (?). traditional herding uses paddles and shakers etc to correct dogs. my guys are not used to such treatment and would respond poorly to it so finding " a positive trainer" was not easy. Finding one that works with upright herding dogs was harder.

If you are in the Northeast and are considering a trianer you can PM me if you want some feedback. chances are I would have thought of them - or contacted them in some way.

Congrats to all those who passed the test! :go: That's terrific!! :clappurple:

I became encouraged again in this venue when I read another post that Dawn had made where her other OES didn't start until he was 4 or 5 years old. The wigglebums didn't show much interest when they were younger, but I might give them another chance now that they've matured a little. :?
Go for it. :D

It also can take a few exposures to the sheep until they feel comfortable enough to actually start working with the sheep. Remember, they usually have been trained and disciplined NOT to chase things!

Yeah, and then there's Liz who upon her first exposure to sheep thought that was her cue to heel beautifully next to me  All the while cheering on MY wonderful sheep herding abilities. :P

I'm considering asking for special permission to have sheep in the ring when we go for her CD

I probably will test her again precisely for the reasons Dawn suggests.
