So, my colleague is administering the test (which involves saying the word, following it with a sentence that shows the meaning, and then repeating the word again). She's on the sixth or seventh word when she notices that one of her grade four students hasn't written any of the words down. (They start off very easy, and get harder as they go, so it's not that he can't do it.) So she goes over and says to him, "Why aren't you writing down any words?" To which he replies, honestly and without any hint of sarcasm or snarkiness, "Because I don't know French." So, apparently he heard the name of the test (Schonell - which does sound French) but failed to notice that all the words and sentences which followed were in English. I guess he also thought that the other 25 students who did write the test picked up French as an additional language over the summer! (Apologies if this humour doesn't translate. Teachers tend to have a unique - or perhaps it's rather sad and pathetic - sense of humour.) |

poor kid, how old is he? When you said you teach early years I think of 4 and 5 year olds. He must have been older. |

Her post said grade four - so about 9 year olds. Poor kid - he's off to a rocky start this year! |
My husband grew up 70 miles south of Montreal. He thought it was a funny story. |
