Let's talk about washing machines

NOT the most exciting topic but we at oes.org have an opinion about everything. I want a new washing machine. I want it to have distinct cycles and a delicate cycle that really is delicate. I don't want it to move when it spins. I want it to get the clothes clean. I would like a front loader but I think I have to get a top loader due to space and money (and that I've heard more bad things than good about front loaders).

And I don't want to spend much more than $500.

So are all washing machines created equal?

Ah, a subject after my own heart......

I am really, really hard on machines. I wash all kinds of dirty, gravely, nasty, heavy stuff in mine. And I use it a LOT. It is just Todd and I and I still manage to wash 1-3 loads every day.

I burnt out a heavy duty Maytag commercial quality in less than a year!!
The one I have now, I really love it is a top loader Amana. I went out and checked it - this is what it is:
Amana Commercial Quality washer
2 speed motor
9 cycles - of regular, perm press/knit and delicate
stainless steel tub
extra rinse feature
3 water temp settings

I can't recall the price, but this one is 2-3 yrs old now.
Good luck in the hunt!
I let my mom pick mine out. I find that's always the safest way for me.
I covet my mom's washing machine and she said she'd leave it to me in her will, but her condo is for sale and the washing machine stays with the condo. :( It's several year old and I don't think that model is available.

Keep the opinions coming. As a single person, I manage to do 4-5 loads a week and that doesn't count Bob the Wonder Pony's saddle pads.

My GE washer and dryer are 24 years old and still working great (knock on wood) - I know they will die soon. My best advice would be to use the Consumer Report, they are pretty reliable. and I am like you, I don't need the top of the line. My sister just recently got the full size capacity stack, and loves it.
We got a new washer and dryer a little over 2 years ago-
(can it really be that long ago already?!) My old ones
were still working, but I knew it wouldn't be long before
I had a problem and I didn't want to be stuck without. With
2 dogs, two boys and a husband that would have been a
disaster.
I looked at every model available for months and compared
and read hundreds of reviews. I found a few that passed
my requirements. However I did not find a single front
loading machine for around $500. I did find a few top loaders
in that range. For the energy use and water use, I am so
glad I got the front loaders! The only complaint I have is
that I cannot change the load size - in mine it is done by
weight. I can change the length of cycle and all the other
variables. And my delicate is truly gentle.
Our set is maytag. I did read some negative reviews of maytag,
but not this model.
Maybe you can get a serious discount like Ron did! That would
be great. Never be afraid to ask for $$ off. The worst they
can say is no.

The best washer I have ever had was my GE plain jane ordinary washer. It got the clothes really clean. We purchased it back in Feb 1986, and it just died about 3 years ago. We never had a problem with it up until that point. The one we got to replace it is a whirlpool and a piece of junk. I absolutely HATE it. It doesnt agitate good and actually needs a service call right now. It has all these fancy cycles etc and it doesnt get the clothes clean. I want my plain and simple jane washer back. I have been coveting the new washer sears has been advertising. Front loader, steam clean etc.
A great deal buying a Sears Washer and Dryer
Ron, I read your saga when you first posted it. You're a great bargain hunter but I'm the opposite. I find what I want and pay full price. Don't suppose you'd like to be my personal appliance shopper?
Do you have a subscription to Consumer Reports?
My boyfriend's daughter & her husband just bought the new front loading LG machines with the steam cycles and all the bells and whistles. She's in love with them. She told me they pulled up chairs and sat in front of them watching them wash & dry the first few loads - they were so enthralled.

However, they are not inexpensive, so I am sure you can find something that will do the job you need without paying that price for it.

I would LOVE to have the new set, but my GE washer & dryer that I've had for 12+ years are still going strong (*touch wood*). So, I guess I'll just keep them for now.

Good luck in your quest. :P

These were on my wish list until my husband talked to the appliance person we know. apparently they break down a lot!! he said (I think) to get the maytag version.
I needed to replace mine last yr. Both were about 20 yrs old. I went for the GE Profile. I LOVE THEM. My old washer was not getting all the water on the spin cycle. This is 2400RPM and can that baby spin. They are front loaders. My water bill went down and so did my electric bill. Mine are on pedelstals(spelling) They are black, and chrome trim. I like the height since I am tall and with my hip it is much easier for me. Not to mention that I have storage under them :D

Consumer Reports says that the Maytag brand breaks down the most, IIRC.

I can look it up online, but it is copyrighted subscription material. So...

Please don't. I would rather not know.
