I've talked to a dozen other people who've had babies and dogs and no one has said their vet informed them of that. I had 5 of the dozen people call their vets and their vets had never heard of such a thing. Anyone else? The vet just called and reminded me I should pick up the dewormer medication. Let me know! |

never heard of that - always heard cats were an issue. |
Never heard of it but it makes sense. I'd hate for my dogs to give worms to a baby in the house. Babies eventually crawl around on the floor and put their fingers and other things in their mouths. I can also see a dog with worms scooting their butt on the carpet So it just makes sense to me.
We keep all of them on year-round Heartgard Plus so it should never be a problem anyway... Quote: When used as directed, HEARTGARD Plus is highly effective in preventing heartworm disease in dogs and puppies as young as 6 weeks old. HEARTGARD Plus also treats and controls hookworms and roundworms... |
wouldn't it make more sense to test them for worms? |
You'd think so, but they've never had worms. And giving a dewormer every 6 months for 5 years seems like a lot of medicine. The vet said that I should give the dogs a dewormer till the child learns that they need to wash their hands frequently. |
I have always had dogs (as a kid and as an adult) and raised two kids of my own. I'd say it was up to you but it seems like a lot to me. |
I took Barney to the vet while I was very obviously pregnant (like I had the baby 3 days later) and he never mentioned anything like that before. Maybe your vet is just covering all their bases.
But, more importantly...BABY?! Pictures and info, please! |

Aren't the dogs on heartworm meds at least 6 months out of the year anyway? This would be your "every-6-month-treatment"... even if you only give it 6 months out of the year. Check your current monthly hw meds to see if they also eliminate other parasites. I guess it seems like it should be a non-issue... |
While Oscar's heartworm meds (Sentinel) protect against hookworm, roundworm, and whipworm, as far as I know they do not cover tapeworms. When Oscar gets his yearly check-up, he gets one dose of Drontal, which covers the rest of the worm family. Worms, BLECH!!!!!!!!!
Laurie and Oscar |
I've never heard that either. But, my dogs stay on HW preventative all year round. So, they're basically covered.
AND you've been absent too long to pop in and ask a question like this without sharing photos of the baby!! You had to know we'd ask!! Do share!! |
Oh, I hadn't considered tapeworms!
Ok, so this is gross but something I didn't know until recently... If a dog eats a tapeworm segment or the eggs, it will not become infected. But if a dog eats a flea that has eaten the tapeworm eggs, it will become infected. So you would have to eat an infected flea to get a tapeworm... which Kaytee must have done because she arrived with a tapeworm. You really don't want the worms to get a hold.
To me this raises a few questions. If testing for worms how often do you test? If using dog parks and the like and if you have multiple dogs is it fair just waiting until a test is positive before worming? |
Jacob is a sweetie |
Sorry everyone for being absent for so long! I was always online after working, but when I was pregant the first thing I wanted to do was go to bed after work!
Jacob was born on 5/23 weight 7lbs 12 oz and 20 inches. Hendrix was not too happy with us. He ate very little for about 2 weeks. Zappa (our Wheaton) could care less. We kept up with daily walks and trips to the dog park to show that the new baby did not mean any change. Now Hendrix licks him like crazy. I've also learned that you must keep your baby bibs out of Hendrix's way. He licks them like crazy and gets the stinkiest farts from the formula spit up. Hendrix and Zappa are on heart worm medication year round, so I'm still perplexed as to why they need the dewormer. My coworker is pregnant with 2 dogs and is going to my same exact vet, yet the vet didn't tell her about the dewormer. So strange! |
Jacob is adorable..so much hair! My grandaughter born one week before has lost most of her hair. He has such beautiful eyes...you are blessed! When we visit Rosie wants everything that has the baby's smell on it and wants to lick her to death...if only those two legged people would let me! |
Great looking pics! |
OMG!! What an adorable little fellow you've got there. I just want to kiss those chubby cheeks. Goodness gracious he's cute!!! Thanks for the pictures. |
