I use peanut butter and any mess is cleaned up before I get home You can freeze them with peanut butter, a mix of peanut butter and kibble, wet food, yogurt etc. depends on the dog how messy any of these are. My guys will clean up all the peanut butter and leave some of the rest. |
W used to cover the hole in the bottom, insert a bunch of kibble, fill with water and freeze. If you want, you can then put some peanut butter on top, but Barkley was quite happy with just the frozen kibble. I think it probably felt good while teething too!
Yup, people layer all kinds of things in there - apple, yogourt, cheese, kibble, treats, you name it, it's probably been layered in a Kon at some point! |
I use fat free cream cheese in kongs for the wigglebums most of the time. But, I've used peanut butter, yogurt, kibble, cheesewhiz, treats...lots of things. They can all be frozen just to make it take longer to get all the goodies out. Of course, with those warm tongues, it melts fast. As for messes, well, mine must be good a licking them clean because I never have a mess from them. |
Owen's belly tells a different story! He pushed his around a bunch and laid in the peanut butter smears. It's a pretty easy clean up though. It came out with a washcloth. |
I just put a squirt (or three) of the Kong 'Stuff-n' paste inside and rub it round the inside with my finger to distribute it around. I keep the Kong stuffing can in the fridge to keep it nice and cold although it doesn't need to be refrigerated but they enjoyed it during the very short hot spell we had here this year (I think that was summer!) Never anything left inside when I get home and no mess either!
I also have the kongs with grooves around the side and I put a piece of kibble in each groove to leave them with when I go out - that keeps them busy for a while too! |
I also prefer doing tiny kibbles. I don't like the mess of a paste (on her face). |

I don't think I used peanut butter when they were that young actually - it is awfully rich. |

I definitely wouldn't go globbing a pound of it in there but a dab on the top of frozen kibble shouldn't be a big deal. It's just to keep him interested, not fortify. His breeder gave us the okay, too. |
We definitely used a little peanut butter when Barkley was little too. Somewhere in the range of a teaspoon or so a day shouldn't be a big deal. Don't really need to any more, he's got the kongs all figured out.
Owen must be in a crate when he has his kong with PB - I would expect that Clyde would make short work of any belly PB otherwise... |

You bet. It's a closed crate situation only otherwise everyone is diving for it. Treats that take time to eat are given out only in separation situations in our house. I send Clyde upstairs, Bear gets the dining room and Owen in the crate. Otherwise Clyde will steal from Bear, Bear will steal from Owen and Owen tries to get his treat back and Bear doesn't want him in his face while he's eating and he makes terrible noises, lol. Everything is a delicate balance for harmony! |

Exactly. There is a rhythm to the madness. |
I have a kong and will put a treat in it for Obe when I leave. He has it figured out that if I dont hide the kong somewhere in the house he has it eaten before I get out of the house. I use all his toys actually for hiding places. If I can hide a treat, under the arm of the stuffed monkey for instance and hide the monkey as well, then I do it. Everyday is somewhere different. Keeps him guessing and it is funny to watch him search every crack and cranny for a treat. Keeps him busy for a while. |
When we put Casey in the crate, I bring his kong to the kitchen to put peanut butter in it. Once the kong is in the kitchen with me he starts pacing back and forth towards his crate and then back to me. As soon as it's got the peanut butter in it we say "Go to bed" and he bolts to his crate (no joke) and then either sits or lies down in his crate to wait for his treat. He never even notices us leaving and there's not a trace of peanut butter left when we get home.
I have a friend who has a peanut allergy so I have a second Kong that we use before she comes over and I use canned salmon and cream cheese instead of the peanut butter, I was a bit worried about the smell but he was equally good at clean up on that occasion. |
