Identity Theft!

I received a call from my bank regarding some unusual charges. I thought nothing of it, figuring it was probably all the charges I had been making to Home Depot, lowes, and OSH... But alas, they were for Porn subscriptions.

So we cancelled the card and I thought I was pretty much done. Then I speak to my boss and another bank officer and find that I still have much to do. So I get busy calling Equifax and SSA and further protect my credit, I even run a credit report on myself to check for any unauthorized charges or accounts.

Then I get one of those calls on my cell phone and I think it's phishing, and think about ignoring the call, it's something about a Nike gift card. So I think better of it and look up Nike on line and call the customer service number there to let them know that someone may be using their company name in a phishing scam. We speak further and he asks me for the phone number that I was given. It turns out it's a legitimate number for Nike per his advice I follow up on it to see where it leads me. So it turns out that the gift card purchase was declined due to the credit card that was used.

Long story a little shorter, I spoke to Nike and got more info. Went home and called the police. I have filed a report with my local PD where they love to investigate this kind of crime. My guess is it's a 17 yo boy with lots of hormones and a need for some new treads...

Thanks for listening... this has been a trying week for me and my guess is that it's not over yet.

I'm sorry to hear that you're going through this. I've been there. Make sure you take good notes and keep copies of everything. Check all of your credit reports for newly opened accounts. You only have 60-90 days to alert credit card companies of fraudulent charges. Good luck!
Oh my goodness how stressful! Hope it all gets sorted out soon! :?
Does Tyler have access to your wallet?
Must be something about Cali, we just found out some unauthorized charges on our business credit card a couple of weeks ago. Too bad our local police are not so keen on investigating.

This guy who stole our credit card info ordered quite a lot of things over the phone and internet. BUT...get this...this genius didn't change the shipping address and we have been receiving everything he ordered in the mail! Among all the stuffs he ordered...there are two photo prints packages!! He ordered phonto prints online and have them sent to us! How stupid can he be??!! We also got prescription...Acne medication...etc. I also think he is a teenager.

We called the local police because we didn't know what to do with all these stuff we received. Bank of America was no help. When we called them about this, exciting about the fact that we got that person's name and possibly his pictures, they just told us to wait and someone will contact us shortly...a few days later...nada. So I called the police and they said they will call us back the next morning...nada...a few days later, I went down to the local police station with all the stuff we received, I was told that they do not handle identity theft there, I had to call this other number :? Fine...so I went home and called that number...this time the deputy told me to come down to the station as we have to do this in person! What?! Then why did they send me away when I went down there??!! It is such a nightmare.

Anyway, we were told to just send back everything to the sender with NO SUCH PERSON written on the packages.

We had the card stopped a week ago but there was still new charge showing up from him as of yesterday. Apparently it was a charge from 8-25 and was just posted yesterday EVEN though that credit card account is already closed
I am so sorry. This kind of thing is so horrible. We had someone take $5,000 from our checking account a couple years back. They used a " replica" of our cash card at a California Walmart and Target to purchase electronics. We happened to be looking at our checking account on line the day after it happened and were able to notify the bank immediately. The police think our card number was stolen from a waiter in a restaurant - to say the least I am very hesitate to hand over a credit card at a restaurant now.

I have forgotten how, but you can put a freeze on your credit - this way the credit bureaus or somone has to contact you and verify it is you before a new account can be opened. You can also put daily limits on your cards.

Good Luck - Hopefully nothing more happens.
That is so frustrating!! I really hate you're having to deal with this nonesense. I hope you get it resolved quickly and to your satisfaction.

Has anyone signed up for one of those Identity Theft protection plans that is supposed to take care of all this stuff if someone does steal your identity? :?
OH, my worst nightmare!! What an awful thing to go through! I check all of my accounts several times a week, just in case. I travel so much, my card is always in a strangers hand.

I haven't had a problem, but my husbands bank card was hit for $4.78 every other month by a company he had not heard of or done business with. The bank didn't want to go through the process to remove such a small disputed amount. Said it was up to us to work it out with the company. The company was bogus, of course, located somewhere in Africa, and while the bank insisted we take care of the problem, the company was able to hit the account two more times.

We finally got the bank to agree to issue a new card number. This kind of fraud is becoming very common. The amount is so small, most people ignore it thinking they forgot about something they bought.

But it's not small time fraud. If these criminals have 10,000 card numbers and they hit each one of them for an amount under $5 every other month, it becomes very lucritive. Nice ROI.
Yep...must be California. I just got a call two days ago from one of my Visa's. Someone tried to charge $600.00 at a Blockbuster store with my number as a manual key-in. Lucky for me, I didn't have that much room left and they declined it...then they called me. They are sending me a new card, but I just paid it off...so the new one will be shredded.

I want to keep my credit up...just not the bills. I think this economy is making them crawl out of the woodwork. It was only the one card for me, but I just can't figure out how they got my number. It sure is a baig hassle for those of us who get hit. I feel all your pain.
We have had this

Fortunately it was on a card that my wife used once, so it was dead easy to spot and jump on.
I don't mean to scare you, but this can be a total nightmare. It happened to my mom--somebody got in her mailbox and signed up for credit cards in her name--charged over $35,000 and it took us 3 kids almost a year to get it straightened out. Be vigilant, and don't let the credit card companies scare you. They want their money and they weren't always cooperative. And neither were the police. But it sounds like your police dept. wants to solve this so I hope you have better luck than we did.

Capital One was the biggest pain in the@ss. American Express was wonderful......

Ditto!

AMEX is the best company to work with if there is a problem!!!
This brain wave also did not change the mailing address or the phone number. That is why I got the call for the Nike gift card... They work so hard to steal....... My biggest concern is where did they learn this? Who taught them that taking what you want is right????
So I thought, I better look at the July statement just to be sure that we didn't have anymore charges....

3 charges for $278.00 to a company called Crucial.com

I didn't make them. I will call them to find out what I "bought" and see what I can do to get my money back, I'm sure they will not be as easy as the other companies I have had dealings with... but still it's worth a try.

Nothing in the June statement....

When we were is Europe this summer, they have a totally different system for credit cards in restaurants. The waiter brings a handheld machine to your table. You slide your card, punch in your credit card PIN number, and how much of a tip you want to leave. They print a receipt for you. Your credit card never leaves your hand. It's brilliant. I don't know why we don't have the same system here in the US.

Yeah, I saw those when we were in France last year. The only thing I'd be concerned about those maybe would be the wireless aspect of it. Maybe not, though.

Yeah, a lot of times the people who steal credit cards will then go out and immediately purchase gift cards, since those can't be tracked I guess, and are basically the same as cash. So they know they only have a short time before the credit card is canceled, but they can keep on using the gift card long after...

Scary stuff...

Since the credit card company would have the name of the company where the gift card was purchased, couldn't you call that company, explain the issue and have them report the gift card as stolen???
I have purchased from Crucial, they make memory for computers. They are a reputable company, but I don't know how they'll handle this. The credit card company will charge them back for you if need be.

Good luck and keep us posted.
Crucial is doing all they can to assist me! I don't want anyone to think that Crucial.com is at all at fault, they are not.

I'm currently working with their fraud investigator and also learning a lot from him.

The gift card thing is this, when you report that the credit card used to purchase the gift card was used frauduently (sp?) the company refunds your money and puts a stop on the gift card or in some cases the subscription to PORN! Can you believe that they purchased porn subscriptions using my card... so gross!

So far the only companies that have not given me credit for the fraudulent use of my card is Apple for an itune purchase and Crucial. However, they are both working with me,my bank and the Police to investigate these crimes and hopefully go after the criminals. Several of the companies that I contacted just gave me a credit with very little effort on my part.

Everyone! please scrutinize your credit card and debit card statements every single month! don't be like me who thought just because I had lousy credit, I thought no one could or would want to swipe my credit...HA, they will take anything that they can get. My credit due to a lot of hard work was improving and something like this can really screw you up. I now check my credit report and bank statements like a fiend. Also I have placed Fraud alerts with all of the credit reporting agencies and we are looking for a locking mail box now.

Please keep up the commentary on this subject. It is very interesting to see everyones experiences and what they do about it. I have talked to several people who have reported this type of crime to the their local PD, I have been surprised by the underwhelming response from the various different Police departments, "oh, we don't have a department that investigates that kind of crime..." and others... I'm glad that I got as positive a response as I did.
Chip and pin isn't flawless

In the UK the people who installed the system at Shell stations, had a few hookey installers, they were skimming of all cards at a few petrol stations, the whole shell chip and pin system was taken off line for a few months while they resolved it.

It has got to the point that the scammers are getting that crafty that Barclay Card now gives customers a machine to put your card in for online transactions that you have to punch in a code given when paying on the website on that device and then enter the resulting code generated into the online transaction it is a unique code for every single transaction.

what next retinna scans and finger prints?
My Dh is very vigilant about checking things and is very parinoid(sp) that someone is going to steal his identity. Thus we have a shredder and everything that has a name on it gets eaten.

The people that think up these ways to get "things" from others...can you imagine if they put those smarts to good use, what they could do...

Don't need a shredder here...we are hicks and still have a burning barrel.

Sorry about the theft. :(
