I have an 8 year old sheepdog, he was altered at age 7 (I know this was late), the problem he is having though is that ever since he was altered his penis will not retract. I have asked the Vet that performed the procedure if having him altered could have caused this, but the Vet assures me that this could not be the case, and then he stated that he must have been like this before the procedure. As I stated before Frosty was 7 when the procedure was performed, and Frosty has lived with me since he was 8 weeks, and this was never a problem before. I went to another Vet and he stated that they could stitch the outer skin slightly to help hold him in, but I was wondering if anyone out there has had the same experience. This condition doesn’t seem to bother him, but we keep his coat short and with winter here I would like to have this matter resolved before something gets a little to cold. |

The only thing that I can think of with this is that he has some long hair that is caught around the pink part. That had happened to one of ours once. Dry hair and moist skin don't get along well.
If you've already seen your vet about it, I doubt that this would be the case but it's the only thing that I can think of at the moment. Unless your dog got into a medicine cabinet somewhere. |
It's really strange to me that this has started happening since he got neutered. I think you should seek another vet's opinion. |
Thanks to all for you help and thoughts, I am going to take Frosty to another vet that was recommended to me, and hope to have an answer. |
Although I do think you should seek another vets opinion as well, I just wanted to mention that some male dogs do hang it all out more often than others, neutered or not. If your dog was neutered at 6 months or so (I don't remember if you said when he was neutered, or how old he is and I am too lazy to re read) then he may just be maturing now. Although a neutered dog will have a diminished sex drive, because of lack of testosterone, he still has feeling there...lol.... (I'm trying to keep this post "family friendly") |
I remember the ride home from the Vet after Oliver & Ozzy were neutered (they were about 6-8 months or so). My neice (who was only 4 years old) asked my Mom what the "pink thing was sticking out of Oliver". She replied, "that's what we just paid $150.00 to NOT SEE anymore"!
It's common for this reaction once in a while - but it should NOT be something that is permanently erect and I'm glad you've decided to seek the advice of ANOTHER Vet. Good Luck! Kristen |
