He looks like the Swamp Thing!

Okay, Gus Gus had an excellent Labor Day and we learned he LOVES Lake Michigan. The problem is he now resembles and smells like the Swamp Thing from all of the "seaweed", algae, whatever it is. Anyone have any good tips for getting it out of his hair? I got a lot of it out, but it's like rock solid once it dries and he has lingering bits on his feet and belly. He got an impromptu haircut last night in my efforts to get it out! Poor dude, he STINKS!

Oh, this one is right up my alley!!
I have had lots of practice. :(

Best is to get him wet and actually soak him in standing water. It helps to "float" the particles out of the hair that way.
Also, a bar of Dove soap helps get it out. It really does!

We just did this on Sunday evening, after he took a dip in the Minnesota River to cool off. (He had permission, but he was really, really nasty)

Or, this is the look from a dip in our yard pond -

And this is the next day -

All nice and clean and on parade....... :sidestep:
Oh, haha.

That was me this past weekend too. I took four of them to a fabulous big rural dog park on Friday before Labor Day. Pond, stream, prairie, woods, ravines, you name it, it has it and it was fantastic.

However, we also confirmed that Sybil and Macy also have the water dog gene. (Hi, Chewie 8) ) Che wasn't sure until he saw some fun retrievers chasing bumpers that were being tossed into the water and then he couldn't stand it any more and went in to retrieve the retrievers. Liz was the only one who didn't go in, and even she ended up pretty mucky just by association. Dawn, forgot I could have called you and instead e-mailed Sunny/Lucali in a panic. She said roughly what you said except (Dove bar, multiple rounds of bathing) that when I described how Mace was absolutely caked with mud (she was literally black and grey) she told me to let it dry and some of it would fall out (it did - I swept up a sandbox worth from my kitchen floor) and then bathe her - several times. I did and it worked.

I couldn't even wait that long with Sybil who wasn't just filthy but smelled so bad Belle refused to be in the same room with her. Che is shaved so he was a piece of cake and basically just needed to be hosed down, but even Liz was pretty filthy and needed a full bath. And then there were the endless burrs. Unbelievable.

A two hour hike resulted in 14 hours of grooming. We'll all be going back again as soon as they're all shaved!

LOL - yes, mine was that bad. This was just the edited version. I did hose off a lot at the park with their hose. Then he dried and I brushed more out in the afternoon. Bathing was later in the evening. He was full of weeds, weed seeds, cockle burrs and sandburrs. RRGHHH - that was the worst part. I hate fall vegetation!!!

I AM NOT going back out to the fields at the dog park again unless the dogs are leashed and I can direct the way they are going!!!!

I just deburred both dogs and Randy had to hold both the dogs heads as I worked on them so they didn't bite me. I was being as gentle as I could but I know it still hurts as you pull little bits of hair to get the burrs out.
i have 4 acres of standing water yuck i am so close to shaving duffy

Build a row of hoop shaped sprayers and get the hound to run through it until clean.

Just an idea?

Charlie had fun playing in the mud on Labor Day after torrential rains (for Utah!). This bath was AFTER it had all dried and most of it sluffed off all over the deck. I can't imagine if we'd been home to deal with it when he was at his worst! 8O
Oh, it looks like Charlie had fun!
