My husband and I were just saying over the week-end that this is the first fall since 1987 when our son started kindergarten that we haven't sent a child back to school! Quiet houses are nice and even looked-forward-to when in the child-rearing stage, but believe me - it gets TOO quiet! |
YAY for time to yourself. So we should expect you posting more now right? |
I started my second week with students (I teach 9th grade English and Yearbook). This is the first time since 1991 that I haven't had a child going to school. My youngest graduated last year (2008) but now I have two in college!! I'm the only one in public school now!!! WEIRD! |

Mine have been done for 3 years, but also have 2 in college. I am in school too - but for work. My peds client whom I do homecare for goes to school - so I go with too. School bus rides and all!!! |
I'm a teacher who is going back today. While I'm thrilled for the rest of you...I am sad for me.
I just want to stay home for another two months to hang with my sheepies. I don't know how I'll get back to spending full days away from them. |
My 24 yo daughter started her FIRST teaching job yesterday, 9th grade english. She called me last night practically in tears, she was very upset over how SNOTTY the 9th grade girls were, could not believe the WAY they spoke to her
AHHHHHHHHH, there is justice in this life!! |
Ginny I was laughing out loud reading your post! You are right!! There is justice in life. My parents are forever telling my siblings "you're paying for your raising" when their kids are acting up. |
Ginny, I TOTALLY sympathize, empathize, and any other type of "-ize" with your daughter! Ninth graders can be SNOTS!! But they can also be adorable! Tell her to hang in there... |

AHHHHHHHHH, there is justice in this life!! My 22 year old daughter just started her first teaching job yesterday, too - Spanish I and II to 9th and 10th graders. She has 5 classes, 150 students!! Her district had "meet the teacher" night last night (first day of school!) and tomorrow night, and she met her first problem parent. This woman said her daughter was in Sarah's Spanish I class yesterday and came home very intimidated because Sarah spoke FOUR Spanish words in the course of a 90 minute class!! (Sarah thought to herself - wait until I'm speaking Spanish for the whole class!) She basically read Sarah the riot act and finished by asking, "So are you going to hold my daughter's hand for this class?" Sarah said she just stared at her in disbelief for a few seconds, then politely said - NO! The woman said, "Oh? So it's sink-or-swim, is it?" Sarah thought to herself - so those are the only two choices you think your daughter has? The teacher holding her hand, or she fails. Nice. She talked to her language chair about it, and she just laughed. Said, "Yep, you'll have at least one parent like that every year." Sarah just wanted to make sure she knew about it right away in case (or should I say - when) this woman goes over her head. Welcome to the real world, sweetie!! |
This semester's a mess for me. I still haven't ironed out my plan of work and I've already signed up for two classes and then dropped them when I found the syllabus to not fit in with my research interests. I went to one this evening that after about 5 minutes in the class, I realized the timing on this class was way off from where I am in the program and I needed to get out! At first break, I approached the instructor with my concerns and let her know that I thought the class would better serve me later on into my research so I could attack the projects as part of my dissertation. The instructor agreed and said I was smart for thinking ahead. Whew! I didn't want to just do a walk out!
I picked up another class for tomorrow-- we'll see how this goes. If t sucks, I might toss it all out the window and stay home with the new puppy! |

Ok...Jill...YOU brought it up When is the little tyke due to arrive??? |
This is the first school year I am officially retired...no meetings, no cleaning the toilet in the bathroom etc...I am LOVING it...I have been busy getting ready for my puppy Maggie Maie on Friday! Yes, 9th grade girls are that and more...I always thought seniors were the worst starting in April before they graduate! After 31 years in the business I don't envy your daughter or mine...she has been teaching 7 years now Spanish to high school students. Yes, parents are that way today...they blame the teacher when their child doesn't do anything and expects a good grade. She would even hold a study session at the local coffee shop the night before a big test..she claims she wants them to do well more than they want to do well...some things never change over time. My advice from many years...keep expectations up, don't let the few bring you down and focus on the great kids who want to learn and teach them well!!! Focus on the positives...have your daughter get a journal and record the positive things that happen each day...when they have a bad day or situation in the years ahead they can read this journal and realize they do make a difference for so many great kids! Focus on the positives...it will carry you through the negatives! The good students deserve the best and the others will get plenty of attention! My daughter tells me she still looks at that journal from time to time and it helps greatly! Good Luck to all teachers for a great year...my year is wonderful..focus on my fur babies and grandaughter...life is good! |
