It has been HELL since we left Alaska. A true WELCOME TO HOUSTON starting with our flight out. We had it planned perfectly so we left at a time the kids sleep and arrive by the time they wake up. Let's just say we didn't leave until 3.5 hrs later because they needed 4 flight attendants, and the one we were waiting for was on a plane coming from the lower 48. Making two planes delayed. WHY COULDN'T THEY GET ONE FROM ALASKA! ARGH. Anyway, then continental WAS HORRIBLE with our poor Yuki. They stuck her on the plane despite strick rules about NEVER leaving a dog on a plane that wasn't about to leave within 5 minutes. I had to DEMAND to take her out. They then left her in the rain for 2 hrs. Getting her was another nightmare, so we refused to go further and just drove the rest of the way to our destination!!! Since we've been in our new home, our builder went bankrupt. Leaving everyone to pay for whatever. They left over 200 homes w/o electricity since they had a promotion where they pay for their bill. We had a flood on the first floor and if we didn't change our carpet to tile at the last minute, we really would have been screwed ...although we did ruin some of the walls/baseboards. We're having someone come out to look at the damage. Our electricity went out in the middle of this heat. Our builder didn't pay for the appliances that were placed in our home but thankfully our insurance from the title company is taking care of that. This hurricane has everyone in a frenzy even though we're in probably the safest area in houston. One of the stadiums is already packed with evacuees. People generally don't like the lower income folks coming to houston since the crime rate climbed SIGNIFICANTLY as a result from the last place and just changed the dynamics of many parts of this city. At least they're safe this time! We just got internet which is another long story. On a good note, I love Houston!!! (HATE the weather, love the people) I also met lizrodes before we left Alaska. Brought Yuki over to where she worked (shaved and all). She was a wonderful tour guide at her museum (which Yuki tried protecting us from the stuffed lion she saw at the entrance). I don't have time to read the board, but I'm anxiously looking forward to especially since I see Tasker's mom is about to have a grandchild, and I'm sure there are new pics of butter's & willowsprites doggies somewhere! Hopefully some of barney's baby too |

OH my.....
That is a LOT of bad luck for you guys. Thankfully you, hubby, the kids and Yuki and the rest of the pets are OK through all of that. Yes, you have lots of reading to catch up on....in all your spare time, right??? |
OH GEESH.... that's soo much stress going on all at once.
Hope things start getting calmer now. |
Things can only get better from here...right WELCOME BACK, you were missed!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Glad you have arrived, and hopefully have had a few year's worth of bad luck out of the way. You certainly have had your share--and then some.
Moving cross country is definitely an adventure. Glad you, the hubby, kids, and of course, Yuki, arrived safe and sound! Good news on my end, too: My son was finally discharged from the army after about 2 1/2 months of delays due to being lost in the computer and other bureaucratic stuff. He enrolled in university classes the first day he was home and started classes last week. He seems happy to be home; the dogs follow him EVERYWHERE and sleep with him at night. He's reconnecting with friends, and since it is birthday season at our house, we've had all his siblings home for at least some time with their brother. So, I have a lot to be very grateful about. |
how funny tgir! We were just talking about him and wondering how things were going. So glad he's reconnecting with friends and you're with him. You'll have to tell us how he does this semester in school. I bet he feels "free."
FORGOT TO ADD: YAY TO PALIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Moving the whole family aint easy
Glad everyone has finally arrived home sweet home, here is wishing you all the best as you settle into your new home. Things can only get GREAT from here on in Welcome back |
Glad you made it safe, if not quite sound! Hope you can settle in quickly and begin a normal life |
We MISSED YOU.......... What a terrible time you have had...It WILL get better!!!!!!!! |
I was wondering when you would get back on the internet.
You've had all the bad luck for the rest of your life with the flight, builder and now a hurricane hitting close. Take some time to sit back, relax, have a glass of something and just look around at the chaos. It will wait. My best wishes to you on getting settled in!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
So sorry to hear about all your bad luck. Thank goodness you made it to your destination and are slowly getting settled in. Welcome home!!! |
How absolutely awful!
Let me know if I can help with anyone (ok after Gustav comes and goes here). |
Welcome back! You have been missed. Well, you know what they say about "best layed plans"? I am sorry you had to go through all of this, and poor wet Yuki, but the "trip" part is behind you now. Sorry about all the problems regarding the house. I hope things get worked out and settled down soon.
Happy to hear you landed in Houston safely. |
Welcome back! Whew you really have had a tough time- poor Yuki
Still, you are all in one piece and everything will calm down soon enough. I'm so sorry about your house- hopefully things will all be fine soon. |
missed your post .. glad you are safe and sound welcome home |
Oh my! Hopefully the worst is over, and you can begin enjoying your new house. One of my best friends is from Houston. They are a nice bunch of people, aren't they. |
I hope things get better - - we are glad you are back! |
Glad you are safe and in your new home. Sorry for all the bad luck with the move. And poor poor Yuki. Just remember things can only look up. Sure missed your posts. How are your little guys settling in to their new home?? Look forward to your posts. |
Lil J has his own bunk bed now (before was still in crib), so.... he wakes up in the middle of the night to play with the toys in his brother's room. The toys go off (noise) and he RACES to his room yelling "oh my... oh my..." (knowing he's in trouble).
The cats are dying to be outside cats. We have to be super careful opening the door. |
Welcome back!
Sorry to hear it's been such a nightmare of a move... hopefully things will settle soon |
Welcome to Houston, here's the edge of a hurricane. Well, you have a home and a complete family, the trip is past, the builder, well, let's hope all the mechanical is OK........time to start this life as a Texan again.
Can't wait until your furniture etc arrives and you can start cooking again, tho maybe not as much as you don't have the military wives to feed. We miss your recipes.........and pictures. |
As a Houstonian, I have to take exception to the fact that Houston doesn't want low income people here. During hurricane Katrina nobody in this country was helping the people stranded in New Orleans until Houston sent busses and evacuated them to the astrodome. Housing, food, clothing, etc. was provided for a couple of years to those in need. What we didn't appreciate, was the criminal element that came. Our crime rate went up as a result. There are many low income people in Houston and they aren't all criminals. I don't mean to get on a rant, but I am very proud of Houston and how it always steps up to the plate to help those in need.
That aside, welcome to Houston. It is a great place to live. Sorry about all of your difficulties. |

I'm going nuts w/o an oven!!!! Ours isn't hooked up b/c we plan on selling it so I can use that money to buy a double oven. Should have it in a week unless it takes longer for it to come in. Almost got it today. |
Wow Mrs J! Sorry about all the drama.
Glad you have all made it to Houston!! |
Welcome back Mrs J! Wow, just too much stuff. But no oven
Moving in is always a challenge. Hope everything is well soon and you are creating new recipes to share! |
Happy to hear that you and your family got there ok, sorry to hear about all your problems tho. |
Wow, Jo, what a hard journey it's been! This, too, shall pass. Look at it this way - at least Mr. J is home with you and not overseas! |
Welcome back! And Welcome HOME! I'm sure it'll all calm down soon and then you'll just appreciate your house even more |
Welcome back! Hope things get settled down soon. |
So sorry you had such a rotten time I am so glad you made it back ok though |
Goodness gracious what a nightmare you've had to deal with in this move. I really hope the worst of it is over and things will go more smoothly from here on out. I'm glad you're there and starting to get settled. Super glad to have you back on the forum. |
