Possible Hurricane Gustav

Ok this is getting a bit ridiculous here as Gustav hasn't even entered the Gulf of Mexico but this is what is going on.

Right now the projected eye is suppose to hit Morgan City, LA which is exactly south of Baton Rouge. If this stays correct - we are in it's direct path.

The governor has already declared a state of emergency.

Over 700 buses are on there way to New Orleans to evacuate the folks down there.

SPCA started yesterday and today evacuating all the animal shelters and bringing their animals to other shelters from Baton Rouge north. (I called and volunteered to go and help feed and clean their kennels if help is needed at our local shelter.)

Nursing homes and hospitals to the south of us are starting to evacuate patients tomorrow and saturday.

There is no bottled water, bread, canned meat, batteries, flashlights, generators, paper towels, toliet paper, storm radios to be found in our area. The shelves are bare. I went to stock up on Diet Coke. (Ok I admit I can live without electricity but I MUST have my Diet Coke. )

I spoke to Betsy - if it gets very bad and we have to evacuate, we will head her direction with all 3 sheepies.

BTW, the LSU game that is being played at home on Sat @ 4:00 pm is not being cancelled. Hey we can live without lights - but we need our football. GO TIGERS!

Folks here in Louisiana and even in Mississippi from what I hear are all nervous. Remants from what happened during Katrina. This is going to be a very longgggggggggg 3 day weekend.

P.S. I did speak to Robin (Gumbo) in Metairie and her and her family (along with their sheepies) are headed to Destin/Disney World. They are leaving tomorrow morning. It was a vacation they had already planned.

People up here in Leesville and Fort Polk are starting to freak as well. I just bought some extra water, I'm not really concerned. I have enough stress already without adding to it, for what at this time is not a definite thing, at least for us. I hope all goes well down your way. Be careful and be safe! And watch out for those crazies that are bound to come out if it hits. My house is guarded by a sheepie, a cat, a 12 gauge semi-automatic shotgun, and a nine mil..... :D
All I can say is wow, and I was getting cranky because there may be snow here on the weekend.
Good luck down there. I hope it all comes to nothing and that everyone freaked out for no reason...

Stay safe...
oh, and you should at least stock up on that new Diet Coke with Vitamins so you'll have some nutrition if the hurricane hits 8)
Stay safe! After Katrina, I am sure everyone is very nervous. That is the way we felt, last week, with Fay. tg that is over. crossing fingers!
Please take care!!! Oh-- and SO glad you are back! :)
Stay safe and hoping it does not increase in catergory and does not come ashore.

Been in the news here this morning of the potential of this newest threat to New Orleans areas. Just hoping it does not cause the devastation that Katrina did and people are more prepared this time if it is a Big one coming ashore and the Levies Hold for the sake of those that have re-built and still recovering from Katrina.

Thinking of you Wyn and all the others waiting, must be so scary after last time. :(
Yipes, if it stalls Sunday/Monday it will swing towards Houston.

Plus there's Hanna sneaking a peek at Florida's East Side.

  Don't you just know the news people would rather be covering 2 hurricanes than the Republican Convention   2 weeks of Olympics, 1 Dem Convention, 1 Repub Convention, and hurricanes..........WHEN does the new TV season start. I'm tired of talking heads!
Stay safe.

Hubby is on his way down as well...the insurance companies want to make sure they can help out their insured any way possible.
Yikes! Hoping for the best!
I'd rather have the state over-prepared than under. Everyone please stay safe and evacuate if you are told to. Keep us posted, Wyn.
Move away from the coast and hunker down! Stay safe. Protect yourselves then your pets.
I'm just chillin in leesville waiting for the hurricane to come. It's going to be fun. I'm going to go run outside and see if I really get blown backwards like on the weather channel. I can't wait for it to show up.
Don't forget to hook yourself into a kiteboarding harness and a giant parafoil kite...
well, i think we got part of the storm.....our power went off at 930 last night and it still isnt on....a 8 minute drive to work took 35 minutes this morning.....

we had 90 mile an hour winds...every third house (including ours) lost trees, some of them HUGE 80 yr old pines and palm trees...the park across the street from us had street signs twisted and bent, not to mention lost trees and the geese swimming in the grass 8O

3 houses had trees fall on them and 2 streets are completely impassable due to the trees in the street...it looks like a war zone in my neighborhood!

here is an article from today

Hurricane-force winds pound East Valley

John Leptich, Eddi Trevizo, Tribune
Mother Nature must not be a Sun Devils fan.

Monsoon winds of up to 100 mph late Thursday destroyed Arizona State University’s recently opened $8.4 million, 103,000-square-foot “bubble” football practice structure at Rural Road and University Drive in Tempe.

Saturday’s Sun Devils’ season opener against Northern Arizona University at 7:15 p.m. at Sun Devil Stadium isn’t affected by the damage.

Winds measured at 85 mph and shown on radar and up to 100 mph wreaked havoc on the Sun Devils bubble.

The “bubble” structure, which had a fabric roof, is unusable for the rest of the season. ASU is in the process of assessing the damage, school spokesman Mark Brand said. Initial estimates to repair the roof are $900,000 to $1 million. The concrete foundation and FieldTurf surface weren’t damaged. The Sun Devils practiced at the facility eight times, including Thursday afternoon.

Lightning put on a good show throughout most of the East Valley. Jim Homan, who lives in the 8100 block of East Southern Avenue in Mesa, said he has never seen anything like it during his 55 years in the valley.

“I saw two lightning bolts hit,” the 80-year-old Homan said. “It was like a bomb went off. It kind of looked like the rocket fireworks they shoot off at ballgames.”

About 500 passengers spent the night at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport as storm damage to runways and power outages halted travel. The airport was closed for about an hour Thursday night at the height of the storm. The National Weather Service reported up to 1 1/2 inches of rain at the airport.

Terminals, runways and aircraft were damaged, according to spokeswoman Deborah Ostricher. The airport was running Friday morning with one runway open and a second close to being ready for planes, Ostricher said. Debris is still being cleaned from a third. As of 7 a.m., there were no major delays, but Ostricher suggested passengers or others picking up travelers call airlines to check on departure and arrival times. Ostricher said winds at Sky Harbor were 80 to 100 mph.

Meteorologist Valerie Meyers of the National Weather Service said there’s a 30 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms Friday night. The weekend could also see precipitation, she added.

“Mother Nature is getting into a uproar for the next week,” Meyers said.

A Salt River Project spokeswoman said the company had about 6,000 customers without power early Friday, while Arizona Public Service Company estimated 50,000 customers had no electricity.

Penny-sized hail, nonstop lightning, heavy rain and hurricane-force winds in a fast moving storm struck Thursday night in the East Valley that left the entire Valley under a severe storm alert.

“We’ve had the worst unusually potent storms and strong winds with this storm,” said Doug Green of the National Weather Service in Phoenix in the middle of the storm. “ Here at Sky Harbor, it was hurricane force ... had a peak of 75 mph winds, but there is still a lot of precipitation coming.”

Live power cables downed by the storm trapped occupants for a time in a city bus at Fifth Street and Hardy Drive in Tempe, according to Tempe fire officials. No passengers were injured.

Nonstop lightning flashed in the sky at a constant rate causing fire concerns. Several trees, homes, transformers were struck by lightning all over the East Valley.

Lightning sparked a fire at a transformer near Germann and McQueen roads in Gilbert, according to Mesa fire officials. A house also was struck by lightning near Warner Road and Quinn Avenue in Gilbert.

And in Ahwatukee Foothills, hail the size of pennies pelted homes and vehicles.

Street flooding and power failures also were reported as the storm picked up power and drenched several East Valley cities.

A microburst over the Chandler Airport produced a heavy downpour that left .51 of an inch of rain in a short time. Rainfall at Chandler Boulevard and Alma School Road reached .91 of an inch. Several roads in Gilbert were overflowing, according to Gilbert authorities.

Salt River Project officials reported that 25,000 homes in Mesa, Tempe, Ahwatukee Foothills, south Chandler and Scottsdale had no power late Thursday night due to lightning and strong winds.

“The biggest threat right now is the fast moving thunderstorms and fast developing storms. We also have heavy winds at about 55 mph or greater,” Green said .

The Valley was under severe thunderstorm warning and urban flooding advisories until after midnight Thursday.

Oh, those slackers....
Hard to get good help these days!
wow! What a mess. I would have been scared to death in that wind.

take care!!!
What is it with the East Valley and their storms?? It was probably a gentle breeze in Peoria. OK, I know the answer, but it still is amazing how one side gets whacked and the other doesn't. Them darn mtns.

Yeah, you've been getting all the rain from Julio. My DH was slipping and sliding around Pinetop/Lakeside what with all the mud. We be dry.
Darcy, Am so glad u r safe.

News here is not good at all.

Right now they are saying a category 4 hurricane storm before it hits us and then less than 1 week away possibly hanna. It is Dejavu here for us because of Katrina and then Rita 3 yrs ago.

This time it is going to be really scary because we are going to be on the wrong side of the hurricane. The National Guard rolled through town this morning on their way south. We have all sorts of reporters from everywhere scrambling to find accomodations here in Baton Rouge since all the hotel rooms were booked up early in the week for folks trying to evacuate and of course the LSU football game tomorrow.

If you want to see what we are faced with in our news and to keep updated this is our news channel: www.2theadvocate.com or in new orleans www.nola.com

Here is the current projected forecast map. Baton Rouge were we are is right above where the red hurricane and 3 is shown hitting the state or right under the bottom portion of the L (where LA & MS meet).

http://tropics.hamweather.com/2008/atla ... zoom1.html

Most of our gas stations are completely out of regular unleaded gas. No generators to be found anywhere. No flashlights to be found as well.

I promise I will not be the one outside trying to see if the wind will blow me backwards.
i have plenty of room if anyone is in need but we have a storm too coming my way..
Wynette,

You stay safe! At least you are not on the coast for storm surge which is only one danger, there are plenty more.  LSU and football....is nothing more sacred??
Wyn, I know its a little far, but we have room available with built in playmates

Stay safe and get out of Dodge if thats what they tell you to do. Don't worry about flashlights, water, although gas will be needed.

We will be praying for you.
That's exactly what I was going to say, Pam. I know it's a bit of a drive, Wyn, but y'all are welcome to come here. Bring the mafia, of course. The wigglebums LOVE company. 8)
Crossing Paws for all of you....
If anybody needs a safe haven, we will squeeze in some boarders!
Like Tammy said we are not close but, you are welcome here anytime!
Hugs
Be safe
Stay safe Wynn, how far is your place from New Orleans? I can't believe all are going through this again, I pray for you all and hope it deadens in strength before it comes ashore. Frightening Deja Vu happening. Just seen on the news tonight Evacuations are started in New Orleans.

Stay safe and I hope all is not as bad as the last big one. :(
new orleans is the main story here to at the moment . We are getting news and pictures. the BBC news team have spoken to a lady called Sue Debatcher who is evacuating says this is the 4th time. She was very upset.
Hope everyone will be okay

You could do everyone a favor.... let the police and fire dept.'s know your exact address prior to the storm.

That way when your stuck sitting on top of your roof "stranded", they'll know you wanted to be there and won't waste their time, and especially their lives trying to save your sorry butt!!!

I hope your just some kid talking silly, but if not..... at least send your family to a safe place and make sure you've asked God for salvation before you do something so stupid!

If I offend you, I'm not sorry! My son, and several on this forum are fire fighters and rescue personel, and I resent people like you putting them in danger!
Wyn...Ditto...ditto....There is room here is St. Louis, (sorry, I can't believe I missed this)----Just please stay safe!!!!!! Really worried!!!!!!
Thinking of all of you that are on the gulf coast and near harms way. Please stay safe. I'll keep you in my prayers. :ghug:
to all that are in Gustav's path you have my thoughts, hopes and prayers.
Wyn, RUN!!!

I have room in SLC. We should be well out of the way

SOA
Ooooh, I hope everyone stays safe. If anyone wants to take their chances and come to Houston, you're more than welcome. We've got room even if we don't have furniture yet! :) My fingers are crossed for everyone.
Been following this on the news it is so scary. I hope everyone will be safe I will keep you all in my prayers. xx
It is almost 2 in the morning here. Napping off and on while watching the news and watching outside. So far the only thing we have seen here in Baton Rouge is some light rain and light breeze. I worry about the New Orleans area as the official report stated that there are approx 10,000 people that have chosen to ignore the mandatory evacuation orders and they are riding out the storm. Also I know that Jim Cantore was reporting from Houma and there was a boat right behind him that had a couple with 8 kids planning on riding the storm out. Someone contacted the Houma police and they were going to remove the kids and move them to safety.

There has been a couple of reported tornados touched down in Livingston parish (your version of counties) that is next to us here in East Baton Rouge parish.

Am going to try to nap for awhile and will post more later as the day goes on and the storm gets closer.
Hope everyone is ok.

New Orleans is the main story at the moment in the UK.

Fingers and paws are crossed for everyone that no-one is hurt.
I am watching on and off on the news I saw animals being loaded up in air conditioned trucks. Our local rescue groups have posts about what is going on as far up as maine 8O Wynette I hope you are safe and I am thinking about you :ghug:
Wyn, Joe and everyone on the Gulf Coast: We're in Myrtle Beach, SC, watching the Weather Channel and thinking of everyone in Gustav's path. Sending positive thoughts and hoping everyone is okay. Please keep in touch and let us know how you are faring over there.

:ghug:

Nita & Nelson
(at the beach with eyes on Hanna on the East Coast)
We're thinking of you. Keep safe!

Yvonne & Wild Angel
I used to live in Lafayette in highschool - and I remember the hurricanes. They were crazy and nothing to second guess. Stay safe. Winston and I will send good thoughts your way.
Stay safe to everyone effective by the storm. To those who have volunteered their time or opened the door for others to be safe you are the best. To those of who chose to "ride the storm out", DO NOT cry for help after wards, you were warned to leave. Sorry, may not be the nicest thing to say, but I don't feel sorry for stupidity.
Many of the people who evacuated for Katrina and stayed here are opening their homes to their family and friends escaping Gustav. It's nice that they will have familiar faces welcoming them.

It just made landfall a few minutes ago. Thoughts and prayers for everyone that it falls apart quickly.
Well, the rain has begun here on Fort Polk. They expect it to really start blowing later today. Our town is full to the brim of people, and everything is just about closed. Post will be closed shortly, no off or on. I'm wondering how long we will have power. I did find out that if our housing is damaged we can go to the temp shelter at the gym, and surprisingly, animals are allowed, but large ones must be muzzled. Since I don't own a muzzle, I would have to attempt to put George's kennel in my truck. I'm remaining an optimist, which is rare for me. All my neighbors and I feel safer on post than if we had attempted to join the thousands of people leaving, many of whom evacuated here, at least until the town was full. Still saying prayers for anyone in the path of this thing, especially those closer to the coast.
I hope you stay safe. Do you have a travel crate??? Muzzle a sheepie ha ha They would just lick you to death!!
I have just a huge kennel type crate, that he never uses anymore. I kinda giggled about the idea of muzzling a sheepie, too. I'm betting if we did have to seek shelter there, George would be a very welcome distraction to a lot of families with kids. We're getting more rain and some wind now, supposed to pick up quite a bit in the next few hours, til after midnight tonight.

You can make a muzzle from a leg of a pantyhose.
Wrap it over the top of his nose, cross it under his chin and bring the ends up and tie them behind his neck, at the base of his skull.

That way he doesn't have to be in his crate all the time!

Good luck with the storm.
Good idea with the pantyhose....now if only I had some  . But seriously, we lucked out on this one. We never even lost power yesterday. The only damage we had is a screen got ripped off my son's bedroom window. The eye, or what was left of it, passed through Alexandria....it's like we had a protective little bubble over us here on post. South of us in Deridder I know the power is out, and all around us, but we have been lucky so far. My satellite never even went out.... 8O . I think the strongest wind gusts we had here were around 60 mph. Now today we just sit through lots more rain, barely any yesterday, really, mostly light rain, kinda strange. Still some wind today too, about 30 mph gusts, nothing really bad though. George still hasn't pooed....convinced him to pee a few times yesterday...and of course Mommy has to be out there with him, trying to stay out of the worst of the wind. I figure eventually he'll have to go..... He likes to stand in the wind and rain and sniff the air, crazy sheepie.
