I do,thats normal for that mix.Kind of the same way my parents cocka-poo acted.except chasing hoodlams up a tree instead of bear cubs.
That's cool!

My little dogs bark at the local bear whenever she shows up out back. She's not the least bit afraid of them though and usually continues about her business (eating the huckleberries) until the barking starts to annoy her, then she'll casually amble away. I've had a few close encounters with this bear - scary, since she's not the least bit afraid of me either. After I took this pic, she actually started walking towards me as if to say "Yes? Is there a problem?"

Betcha can't guess where Fitz (my big brave OES) was when I took the pic.
I had to click on the full size version to get the effect of that photo. Wow! is that in your back yard?? 8O Who are the little dogs there observing? I imagine big brave Fritz was in the house?

The bear is right above the white and tan dog!
that would be so scarey , I would be hiding with Fritz
I'm surprised he didn't wind up being lunch.
Yes - that's my backyard, backing onto miles of forest, a forest full of bears. I've become really afraid of bears lately, so I was figuring that one of the fringe benefits of having an OES would be that huge booming bark of theirs - a nice big bark that will surely keep the bears away.

Anyway, so when Fitz saw the bear, he started jumping up and down on the spot and making an odd "huff, huff, huff" noise - as if he couldn't quite find the breath for an actual bark. Then (Tammy, you got it!) he made a beeline into the house, bouncing and huffing all the way.

I coulda gotten a Pyrenees, a Komondor, a Kuvasz or even a Korelian Bear Dog. But nooooo .... I had to fall head over heels for an OES. "Huff, huff, huff". Good grief.

:D
In Boulder, it was news when a cow named Apple chased a bear away from her favorite apple tree:

Why do apple trees like to grow near boulders? 8)

Great story!
Both are wonderful stories. The picture of the cockapoo reminds me of Little Lady, a "sheepdog mix" (only in the shelter's eyes) they brow beat up to adopt and give her a few months of love and attention before she went to the bridge.

As for the "huffing" sheepdog, I've heard that once or twice, but with brave Pyrs around, the sheepdogs felt they had to at least make a showing.
When I grew up in MT we always knew when there was a bear around because our dogs always had a completely distinctive bark we called their "bear bark".

Last summer Bingley and I visited home and Bingley began to be agitated and bark out the window. My parents were ready to praise him for being a great bear spotter but I knew it was his regular bark, my big brave boy was reeaally upset that their were deer in the yard!!
