After driving for 14 hours, we finally got to meet our little boy! His brothers and sisters bounced about and bit at every part of us they could reach, but little Bally just wiggled over, rested his chin on my lap and gazed at me He is the best behaved pup (touchwood), did not cry, get sick r have any accidents over a 12 hour return trip, and remained super cuddly and cheerful even when we could see he was going a stir crazy as we were. At home, he is addicted to snuffling about in the grass and trying to eat bugs, he also tries to play with his reflection in the window. He cried a fair bit last night, but settled down quickly when we reassured him. Tonight we will try to leave him until he quiets down (my poor flatmate will have to suffer). The smart boy already knows where he's allowed to go to the toilet and can 'sit' and 'come' without much hassle whatsoever. A perfect little angel. I have taken millions of photos already and will try post them ASAP, but the computer is acting up right now. Anyway, I better go check that I haven't just jinxed myself, and Bally isn't destroying the dining room |

Bally is a cutie. But sheepie puppies are trulu the best. Congrats |
Thanks everyone
This pup is an amazing howler Still no sleep last night, any tips? He already has a hot water bottle, ticking clock, and a blanket which smells like us and he is fed/watered for the last time 2 hours before we go to bed. If we do go to him when he cries, he wants to go out to relieve himself and then settles down, so I worry about ignoring the crying... |

Crying or barking should be acknowledged as you are doing incase they need to go out to potty. I have found that even my older dogs sometimes get a bit off schedule. If I ignore it, I usually have to clean it up! As for howling, here is a trick that may work for you. I had one of my show dogs that I co-own here this past week. For some reason, he would "moan" or make a noise like he was "pining" away for someone or some thing when he was put to bed at night in the airconditioned kennel with the other dogs. Now keep in mind he has known me for over 4 years, since he was a pup & has even stayed here at other times so this wasn't a "first time" visit. As long as he was near me he was fine. One of my friends said to turn a box fan on low, pointed in his direction & he should be quiet! I thought they were kidding but after being worken up 3 nights several times with this hearbreaking sound I decided to try it. BINGO! Not a peep out of him all night long! Don't ask me what the magic is but it worked! |
Congrats on your boy Bally.
This weekend was the 2 yr anniversary of when we got Chewie as a puppy. We got him the weekend of our basset rescue's big fundraiser weekend 2 yrs ago - and this weekend he came with and "camped" out with Kristine and the family while we were there again. Lots of reminiscing on our 6 hr drive home this weekend. The time sure flies!! Enjoy your puppy, even with the crying. Take lots of pictures, as it will only be a memory so quickly. |
Bally is adorable! I don't want to sound stupid...BUT what is a "box fan". I would ask the breeder where and how did Bally sleep before you brought him home...he is missing his former mates but maybe they did something that would make him feel more settled? When Daisey was a puppy we put her in our bedroom and she cried everytime we moved...we put her down in the kitchen and after the house got quiet she would sleep. She was great as back then I worked and we put newspaper down at night and when we left and she was paper trained but when we were home she learned to go out...once papers were up she learned to go to the door...by 6 months she quit going on the papers and waited until she could go outside. She was a one of kind...nothing was very difficult with her. We never crated her...quite different with my Tibetan Terrier...she seemed to like the crate when we left her and never went in the crate. She loved her bed in our room at night and slept well if we were nearby. I really think each one has different needs and react differently to different things. Just try different things with Bally. |
The first couple of nights we had the TV on (the Weather Channel) as the breeder recommended. We then transfered over to a just a fan about 4 days ago... we have it pointed up at the ceiling... the sound is soothing.
If mine continues to bark, he is taken outside to potty unless he's done both before crating-up, given a little drink of water, then put back to bed in his crate. If the barking continues, which it did just a few minutes ago for a couple of minutes, the barking is ignored. I don't want him to think someone is going to come running every time he barks. The first few nights are stressful for a new pup... being away from mom and littermates for the first time, in a strange place, etc. Get him into a routine and he'll soon settle in. |
Yay! Congratulations. How exciting for you! He 's adorable.
Clyde sleeps in front of a fan every night and has done so since he was young. I can't sleep without one on so he picked it up because of me. We both find it soothing. |
