Hi,
The one thing I would say is to get a supplement which is Glucosamine Hydracloride (HCL) and not the Sulpahte as the hydracloride is better absorbed by animals where as the sulphate is better for humans. I would obvioulsy always recommend using a product from a well-known company too. |
We had great results with Flexicose for Lucy. It helped her joints more than any prescribed medication. I know Chris used it for Drezzie, too.
http://www.flexicose.com/ A lot of people just use the kind you can buy for people, too, because the formulas are the same but I specifically liked the Flexicose. It's a liquid and easy for the dog to take (especially if you have one that won't take a pill like Lucy was!) and the bottle design is nice because it allows you to just squeeze it to measure the amount on the other side. No pouring, no spills. The price is on par as most others, too. |
I'll chime in here too. We had Drezzie on Flexicose for at least 2 years and we really did see a marked improvement. As Jill said, it was very easy to use - just put it on their food and they never even know they're taking it.
I have a friend who's St. Bernard was diagnosed with hip dysplasia at a very young age and I turned her on to Flexicose as well. She's thrilled with the results. |
Flexicose is awesome and if you can use it, I would. I can't get Winston to take anything liquid without a fight so we use GlycoFlex 3 (tablet). We were using, Cosequin, but Winston had a bad reaction to it. |
Oliver is on Consequin DS. I honestly think the capsules are better than the chewables, but that's JMO.
If it's an option for you, I would look online for pricing. My vet charged us $1 per pill, and online I can them for $0.33 per pill. |
Cosequin DS here too... I use it as a supplement for those with no
symptoms. Those with either HD or a touch of arthritis get two per day. I get it for 26 cents per tablet but buy it in 650 tablet bottles |
We use the human glucosamine chondroitin with good results. I buy the Spring Valley brand from Walmart.
The glucosamine is hydrochloride in this one too. My guys didn't have any specific issues before I started, I just thought it would help down the road. Chewie is really active, and Simon an active older Basset. I did notice something when we were at Sheepiepalooza. Those of you there may have noticed that Simon had a limp. Bad enough that I didn't do any activities with him on Sunday. I thought perhaps he had pulled something jumping into the Element. BUT, when Kristine and I were talking, it came out that I had forgot my supplements the week before when he stayed at a friend's house while we went out east for Lisa's graduation. So, he was about 9 days without it when the limp started. It may have been a coincidence, but Kristine loaned me some of hers to get through the weekend, and in a couple days the limp was gone. And it has not been back. |
thanks everyone. I'll be shopping soon. Barkley just turned three so it's time to start protecting the joints. He's taken to jumping in the air when we kick his soccer ball....very springey for his age.

I use Osteo-3, which I get from the vet. A bottle of 90 tabs is 60, not great.
I have tried other several brands for humans and for dogs with no success. My husband didn't believe that I could tell the difference, so he set up a challenge - he controlled the meds for two weeks. He tried skipping a day, a different brand and even tried a higher dose. We could see a difference in Ben's activity level on the days we used something else. We have all three dogs on a pill daily and are going up in the dosage - to 2/day for two fo the dogs. But they are worth it and it does make a huge difference. |
