should i weight?

hello,
hope you're all well...
alfie is exactly 18 months now.. a short while back the vet told us we could reduce his daily food intake, which we did..
i clipped his coat last week for the rest of summer, and he looks like a little baby all over again.
anyway, i am slightly concerned about his weight; i havent actually weighed him yet, but he seems a little scrawny - i can feel his ribs and spine, though i cant see them.. he's happy, active an muscular, but his legs to me are thin also.
do these dogs grow to the age of 2?
anyone know roughly what weight alfie should be at this age?
we've dropped his food intake to 1200g per day of meat. the tin says he should get 1.5 to 1.75 tins per day; at the moment he gets 1 tin on the vet's recommendation.

Since dogs vary in height, it's impossible to say how much yours should eat. I feed almost exactly the same amount to each dog tho they vary from 100+ lbs to 68 lbs. Each has a different energy level.

You should be able to feel the ribs and backbone, but they should not stand out.

Your fingers should be able to slide inbetween the ribs but with a bit of padding about, not much. The sides of the back bone should not be exposed but the top should allow you to feel each vertabrae.

As for the legs, the back legs should be well muscled.....thunder thighs. The front don't do as much work so you won't find big muscles there. the "belly" should pull up when viewed from the side, when viewed from the top there should be an "waist" or narrowing behind the ribs.

Most dogs tend to be overweight, but in my experience it's those who run a bit lean that last the longest. Paige was terrible about eating but lived a super long life...she knew what her weight should be and won't over eat....strange concept in this house.
everything you say sounds right, its just he doesnt seem as solid as some oes' ive seen; he doesnt seem to have filled out if that makes sense?
do they grow to age of 2?perhaps he hasnt completely matured physically yet?
They grow well past the age of 2. Most of my males finish filling out around the age of 3. My heads grow for 4 years. Depending on height & thickness of bone the weight can vary.

Oh I can attest to that - even though Morgan doesn't have your kennel name he is definitely following that pattern!!!

He will be three in October and is still filling out. He is a BIG boy :)
really?

thats good news then, so there's nothing to worry about by the sounds of things; everything that's described seems to apply here.

i may well increase him to 1.5 tins of meat a day for while, worst case scenario he winds up a little overweight, we can soon excercise it off

thanks guys
