We also have a two year old male. He was adopted by us and I am currently trying to obtain his AKC registration and check pedigree. You can send me a personal message or e-mail if you like. Not real sure how big of a hurry you are in. It is nice to know that I am not the only one in AL with a sheepie that views this forum.

i had an old english sheep dog for 11 yrs.he recently passed away. could you please email me if you know of any breeders in alabama. i am having a hard time finding any. thank you.
Patty,

Contact the Breeder REferral Contact - you can get her information from www.oldenglishsheepdogclubofamerica.org ! I think I saw a sheepie in Alabama on Petfinder recently. Are you looking for a puppy or would you be interested in rescuing a dog?

Kristen
I am afraid that I do not have any information on local breeders. My Pud Monster was somewhat of a rescue, so I was blessed with him. After being a member of this forum for a while (and learning alot), I must say that we may not have a truly "reputable" breeder in our area. I'm afraid that most people do not do the research that is needed. Albert's Mommy might be able to help you some, as I believe she got Albert as a puppy.
WOAH! Am I in the correct forum?!
Isn't this Forum Index "Sheepdog Clubs and Rescue Organizations" ??
 Well, it is from March of 2003.... but no excuse.

Got an idea for a better category?

In fact, I'm going to go start a poll on this issue. Thanks for pointing it out!
Ron,

From a rescue stand point, I'd have to say this would go in the "Dogs in Trouble" catagory. ::sigh::

No "reputable breeder" would be posting on ANY forum for a "stud" or offering up their own dog to stud.
Nor would any reputable breeder be looking on ANY forum for a stud for their "bitch".

And yes, I realize the post has been going since '03 ... just a little taken aback that no one said anything earlier.

BritPresSyd's advice directling folks to www.oldenglishsheepdogclubofamerica.org is the best to follow for anyone looking for an OES pup. On that site a a person can either find contacts for a reputable breeder OR contacts for a referral to a rescued pup.

Thank you for considering a POLL regarding this issue, Ron. :)
I live in Wisconsin, but I am willing to travel to breed my 1 1/2 yr old female OES. We are planning this in a couple of years from now and we haven't obtain her AKC registration or her hip x-ray yet. Would you let me know if there is a possibility of breeding our dogs together? Thanks for your time.

Pondering Breeding? Ponder this and think looooong and hard before taking the plunge. If you aren't willing to do the minimum that I've listed, (and I'm sure there's MORE), then you aren't ready to breed. Take a moment to see if you can handle this financially, physically and I didn't even GO near what happens when puppies die or if you lose the mother during the birth....

Hip Certification at 2 years old and results should be in the EXCELLENT Range prior to breeding
Eye Certification to be done yearly (number is good for ONLY 1 year)
Thyroid Testing is a MUST and should be done at 2 years old and then repeated yearly as this killer doesn't show up until sometimes 3 years old or older.
Baer hearing test should be done on both male and female AND EACH puppy. It can be done as early as 6 weeks old.
COMPLETE Research done on both lines and if your research brings you back to a puppy mill, don't breed. TESTING is mandatory on BOTH male and female. You can test untill you're blue in the face, but NOTHING takes the place of EXPERIENCE. The breeder must take total responsibility for each and every puppy brought into this world. That means being willing and able to take back into your home and support physically, financially and emotionally each and EVERY puppy you breed for the remainder of their lives. Puppies are not physically or socially ready to leave each other until they are 12 weeks of age .... that's THREE MONTHS of having as many as 12 puppies IN YOUR HOME and remember puppies require several feedings per day. Don't forget to write up contracts and do home checks as you don't want your babies adopted to just anyone. Pay a lawyer to look over your contracts. Unless your male and female have completed their championships and "PROVEN", you will be selling to pet homes only and their AKC registration should be limited. Each puppy should be spayed or neutered prior to leaving your home. The owner of the female should be fully aware and familiar with the birthing procedures, have an emergency Vet on call and know what IS an emergency. Good homes should be found PRIOR to breeding...consult a lawyer about a breeding contract with the owner of bitch/dog. Breeding one healthy dog with great temperament to one healthy bitch with great temperament does NOT guarantee puppies that are healthy and have great temperaments! This doesn't cover the HALF of what a responsible breeder does... anyone else want to fill in anything else?? I'm sure I've missed a ton....
Please...do your homework, do your research and know fully what you are getting yourself and these little lives into before breeding.
Cathy
Wow Cathy,

Well stated!

Thanks!
