Two vet trips in one day! What a day! (long story)

We got some scary test results on Portage a few weeks ago, and I've spent two weeks waiting (in horror) for the follow up tests. (The vet wanted to compare over time.) Hudson also had an appointment (he's been itchy since day one, and nothing's helped), so I took both BY MYSELF to the vet. Portage is a great dog - no problem - but evil puppy had crazypuppyheaditis compounded by all twenty or so employees in the clinic loving him up (crazy crazy crazy).

Exhausting.

We saw our regular vet (hard to get in to see and I didn't push it for Hudson in the past). He gave Hudson a shot of dectomax (thinks it might be mites - ick) and a different antibiotic. Okay, good...I'm glad to be actively trying something different. We've been on antibiotics 2 X before...time for something different.

Next onto Portage...tears already being held back...

We retook blood, and I waited for the results (longest five minutes of my life). The results show no change (a very slight improvement actually) and when we looked back across old tests (we get bloodwork regularly...I hate things sneaking up) we noticed that this value has been going up and down for many years. (Thus, it's not an acute problem...but a low red blood cell count is still a scary thing...) His current results are slightly below the bottom threshold for normal, but are only a point or two below past variations.

So, we've been told we can all breathe again. And Portage is now taking B12 and Iron supplements. The vet says it's quite likely that this value is being impacted by his liver condition (nodular hyperplasia) or his thyroid meds (his dose now puts him right in normal, but he says it's not uncommon for this side effect as nothing replaces normal thyroid function completely).

I was fighting to stay hopeful, but this little voice in my head kept saying this could be awful. What a relief!

So, we all went home, happy, and Hudson took a nap. A very long nap. And, two hours into it (he's never slept for two straight hours...ever...not even at night...) he threw up in his sleep. He woke up partway through, but it was weird. Then he went to his crate (unprecedented as he still has to be put in kicking and screeming) and went right back to sleep.

I called the vet who said that he's never heard of a reaction to this medication before, but to bring him right back.

I dragged this groggy, half asleep puppy to the car, and he slept all the way there. When he realized he was back at the vet he started jumping and leaping. Crazypuppyheaditis returns.

The vet checked him anyway, and said he looks fine. If he's lethargic tomorrow I'm to come right back. But it looks good.

What a roller coaster day!
