After admission, creatinine went to 3.0 and crit to 27. Tonight he was supposed to get a couple of pints of blood. So it's wait and see at this point. Now, what started all of this? The last drug he was put on was Bactrim 4 days prior to the blood test for an elevated WBC in the urine. Before that, he was put on 300mg of Zantac to reduce stomach acid (that's a long long story, trying to fix a possible reflux issue). Bactrim is apparently known for kidney issues, high doses of Zantac could cause it infrequently. Could the WBC have been triggered by the 300 mg daily doses of Zantac he was prescribed 3 weeks before that? Or is the Bactrim to blame? Or the combination? Or the Zantac started him down the road and the Bactrim pushed him over the edge? Who knows; the doctors sure don't. So we wait. Wish dad luck! |

So sorry to hear about your Dad. Just a short note to
wish him luck with his tests and that the doctor can identify the cause of increase creatinine. He is in our prayers...please update us when you can. |
Ron, I am sorry to hear about your Dad. Prayers and positive thoughts are going his way. Please let us know how he is doing. |
Hope your Dad is feeling better soon... I have no idea re the meds.... |
I am so sorry your Dad is going through this. Hopefully they will be able to figure it out soon. I am sorry I can't help with knowledge about the meds - but I will send positive thoughts your way. |
Prayers will be said for your dad, and hoping the doctors can figure out what's going on. We need input here from our nurses or EMT people! |
Well the crit numbers are up just a tad (he never got the blood, nobody knows why) and the creatinine numbers are down just a bit so he'll likely be going home tomorrow!
Thanks for your well wishes! |
Ron--
Good wishes and prayers for your Dad's quick recovery. Keep us posted! |
Glad your dad's numbers are getting better.
My husband (without knowing any specifics) said he didn't think that either of those meds could cause kidney failure (in general). But he also said that people can always have adverse reactions or allergic reactions to meds that can cause issues. |
Missed this Ron, sorry. Hope your Dad is doing better and his numbers are improving.
As barney1's husband the DR said I would be surprised if such a short course of either of those meds caused Kidney damage, that generally is a long term thing. But, I always tell my patients any drug can cause any reaction in any person........... so who knows. |

Best wishes though for your dad!! |
This is a little late from the original OP, but in case someone else views this thread, the most important thing when taking Bactrim or any sulfonamide is to drink plenty of water |
