T Boone is putting a lot of his own money into this and makes it sound like it's a win-win situation, a dream come true. However he fails to mention:
Wind doesn't blow all the time. In many of his "red" areas it is seasonal. The effect of bad weather on the system: tornado, ice. The sound from these wind farms makes the better suited to rural areas. Wildlife egg beaters.....this is major migration routes for birds. Ultimate profit per unit, maintenance, etc? Still wind has it's place but is not the only answer. Solar isn't the cure all either. It has some major problems in its systems. The biggest problem for any of these things is government regulation and other outside groups' lawsuits. The current radio ads stating "big oil" (what is small oil?) has 85 million acres they aren't using, why do they need more? They can't use the 85 mil acres because they are tied up in the courts with countless law suits against any type of drilling, exploration, etc. Amazing Cuba/China can drill for oil off our coast but we can't. |
Is it not better to light one candle than to curse the darkness?
Every day the sun shines on a sun-powered electric generation system and every day the wind blows and turns a wind turbine is one fewer day (two fewer days?) that an existing or future power plant has to pump out air pollution of any kind. Every dollar spent here developing our own land into solar and wind farms will stay here for at least for one pass through the economy, and every KilloWatt Hour generated will be one less dollar sent to Canada or Mexico for oil or hydroelectric, or one more car that can be run on grid-based electricity rather than gasoline. |
Pickens is an incredibly influential man in my area of the country.
While I absolutely agree with the IDEAS he has, I have to remember that he's made his billions (and continues to do so) in oil. He is the very first person to tell us a couple years ago that we would see $5/gal gasoline. My thoughts then, and now are that he knows enough to know what's happening on the "inside" of the oil business. And maybe due to that he realizes that his legacy will literally dry up, and he wants to create one that will live through the next generation. I can't help but wonder if he has purposefully contributed somehow in driving the price of oil up in order to make his new plan more and more appealing. He still sees record profits and at the same time builds his idea. I guess what I'm babbling on about is that it's a good idea -in general. But I also don't trust him - in general. |
