August weight loss thread

I've decided to start a monthly weight loss thread. Many of us are on assorted weight loss programs and I think we need a place to vent, to praise, to ask questions, to boost morale. I'll start.

I lost 2 pounds this week! Last Monday I started a program that I devised, based on diabetic exchange and the OLD Weight Watchers program. Basically about 1200 calories a day, with 5 servings of fruit and veggies. 6-8 ounces of protein, 3 servings of bread/starches, 2 servings of dairy. I'm enjoying this and was happy with the results. I've finally realized this is a WAY OF LIFE, not a temporary fix.

I hope this is a lively thread.

Good going Paula! 8)

Sounds like a sensible diet, one that can be adhered to for quite some time. Be creative with those veggies in making sauces for the protein and other veggies. I'm reminded of the greek style green beans.......beans and tomatoes, onion and a dash of cinnamon.
Paula.... I found your 2 pounds. They are right here on each hip!!

I think this thread is a good idea... I am going to try harder to get it "Right" this time around.
The beuaty of life is that every day is a new beginning. I've been doing this for 25 years and still haven't mastered it!
okay; sign me up.

I got a stay of execution, as it were. I was supposed to see my Dr. for an annual today, which I was dreading. I'm alot heavier than I'm supposed to be. But Luna needed and emergency trip to the vet, and I got to reschedule my Dr. appt. for mid-August. (Luna is just fine, btw.)

So I need to start dropping weight. I think if I can lose 5 pounds in the next 30 days, I'd be thrilled. Then I can go on to worry about next month.
What a great thread Paula!! I have been backsliding this summer--- BIG TIME! I would love to have a support group as I try to get back on track and start eating healthy again. Why do fresh summer vegetable taste the best with bacon in the green beans, and ranch dressing smoothering my tomatoes....

heheheheheh

my weakness is dessert and other baked goods. I have insulin resistance, and those things are like poison to me. But I cannot resist them!
About 6 weeks ago I joined a Biggest Loser Challenge at a local park. There were only 7 people that signed up. I anticipated this challenge to be exciting with competitions, weight loss goals, and plenty of exercise. It has not been that way at all. Although the young girl in charge of doing the challenge tries her best, it's just not Biggest Loser.

I have managed to lose 15 lbs in those 6 weeks. I just try my best to eat in moderation and never over indulge. I drink plenty of water, eat my fruits, whole wheat bread, and lots of tuna. Then I will do a quick exercise routine every night except for Wednesday and Saturday nights. Our bodies are all so different and what works for me, may not work for the next person. Good luck to all of you!!!

I would kill to lose 15 pounds. I only need to lose a total of 25. But my body just isn't the losing kind. I've tried lots of stuff; I'm just going to have to keep trying.
Losing weight is exactly what everyone says it is....a lifestyle change. I get mad at myself every week for something. I weigh the lowest on Saturday mornings and by Monday morning I have gained a few pounds back. I used to think that I could never lose weight either but one day I set my mind to do it. Of course I do have a long, long way to go but I'm trying! :)

its a little different for me, with the insulin resistance. I worked out with a trainer 4 days a week, and did a complete dietary overhaul for 3 years, with little results. but in the couple of years since stopping, I've noticed a difference in weight and more fat/less muscle. So I know I need to get back in there an start the fight again.

One thing that is different this time around; I used to be too tired after training to get in enough cardio work out afterwards. Now that I have the dogs, I do alot of cardio; I take walks with them twice a day. So I'm hoping it will be the addition I need to succeed this time!
Great start ladies (and any gentlemen who are lurking  ). Do what works for you. In the meantime, I read this last night and (unfortunately) it's so true. This came from the "Healthy Hillbilly Housewife" website (don't have the URL but I'm sure it would come up in Google or Yahoo search):

Stick to your plan all day long whether you feel like it or not. Food cannot be about feelings. It doesn't matter if we feel like eating what we planned or not. We're adults. If we want to succeed, we must be willing to set such feelings aside and follow our plan no matter what. Opening the door to feelings at this point can often sabotage our best intentions.

So just for today, stick to your plan!

I've been changing my lifestyle for almost 3 months now ( on 8/18/08 ) by incline walking/running on a treadmill 5 days a week, lifting light weights 5 days a week, and on the weekends just lifting to tone up. I have not lost any actual pounds but have shrunk 13 inches overall. I'm adding a diet to this plan -Fat Belly Diet - when I receive the book. Hopefully soon. I workout every am, which reports show people who workout in the am keep it up longer. (Month after Month etc). I'm within 3.5 lbs of my 1st goal weight, and am down 1 pant size. My maximum goal is to look smoken hot for a 47 year old next May 09 when we go to Oahu, HI for our 25th Wedding anniversary. :D

Have you tried the drug Metformin? It's supposed to put IR people on an even playing field with losing weight as it controls the IR. Or tried taking cinnamon? Those are supposed to be great for IR. Also, a low GI diet can help. I think there's even a specific IR diet plan...
Count me in! I lost a ton of baby weight all at once and now it is creeping off. I would love, mentally, to get back in the teens, and have my clothes fit again! I don't have much time to get to the gym and it's too hot to do anything outside, but I think once I go back to work I'll walk the track next to my office...
I figured out that a lot of my issue is I work a mid to high stress job.... not physically but man it wears me out mentally and emotionally. Some days I get home from work and all I want to do is eat and go to bed.

Thank goodness I have the kids and Baloo... they give me something to focus on and this site gives me a break through out the day when I need to think about something OTHER THAN work.. I will take 10 mins, log on and look at the pics, read threads, laugh and giggle at stuff. Then log off and go back to work-- (I learned the hard way NOT to read rainbow bridge items while at work!!) LOL

ANYWAY: for this week so far my diet has not been the best but I have already walked a total of 9 miles. That's got to count for something.. and Baloo LOVES IT
Have any of you tried the Zone Diet? I maintain a pretty low weight and I have been doing this diet for almost 10 years. I cheat all the time and just start the diet back up and drop the weight in a week. I work out for an hour a day 5X a week as well. Work out is essential.

Good luck to everyone trying to lose. Being thin is worth the extra effort!

I haven't tried Metformin; I'll mention it to my Dr next month. The drug he did put me on last year gave me a migrain every afternoon. It was like clockwork, at 3pm I'd get a migrain. So I had to stop taking it.

I do use cinnamon, having read that it helps.

I have several books on IR that I need to re-read. I find if I'm reading them WHILE doing the dietary stuff, its easier to stick with it.

I am on Metformin, as is my sister. We both suffer from PCOD and with that comes insulin resistance. Ask your doctor about it. It has certainly helped both of us! My niece who is 17 has recently been dx as well.... aw heredity ... <sigh>

I went to check; the drug my Dr gave me was Fortamet. My IR is a result of my Endometriosis. I'll ask my Dr about Metformin when I see him.

Do you have any dietary restrictions while taking it?
My Mom always tells me that " Nothing tastes as good as thin feels"

Wanna bet....

She weighs 123 and is 69 years old. Too bad I didn't inherit that gene... My sister and brothers all did though. I tell them I got the hips and the personality.

I like to cook like an 'ole country Grandma and eat like and 'ole country Grandpa....
ok... I just looked it up; Metformin is merely the generic of Fortamet. So we had the same drug, and it gave me migrains.

Not true restrictions-- just a recommendation to stick to lean proteins and stay away from simple sugars-- typical IR diet.

I was told I had to stay away from ALL sugars, and all foods that broke down to sugars. And until I could do that, the meds would continue to give me migrains. That includes fruit, some vegetables (potatos, carrots, peas and more), anything made with flour, dairy (lactose is a sugar) ... it was really tough for me to cut so much out of my diet. In the end it seemed that green vegetables, fish and meat were all I could eat.

You could still try Metformin, as sometimes the generic and the brand name can affect people differently. I was once on a birth control pill (brand name) and then was switched to the generic and couldn't handle it as it made me ill. Glucophage is another name for it.

I have PCOS too, and I'm lucky in that I don't have to worry too much (usually! post-baby time excluded) about my weight. I can lose weight pretty easily and keep it off. But I'm also not insulin resistant, so I think that makes a huge difference.

As for Metformin and dietary restrictions, apparently carbs are bad, and many people have issues with things like lettuce. It can create some pretty bad stomach ailments (not bad as in medically bad, just some 'explosive' situations). I never really had much in the way of foods affecting me badly while I took it, and since I wasn't taking it for the usual reason, I also didn't pay much attention to what food to eat or not eat while on it, lol.
okay; I'm going to leap in a new direction here...

Its Thursday night. I've resisted a trip out for ice cream, and am currently telling myself that i DO NOT in fact want a cocktail. When I go to bed in an hour or two, the only sugar I will have had today was in my 2 cups of coffee! :yay:

Tomorrow I'm going to try and get up early enough to beat the heat, and take Tonks for a 45 minute walk. That would be my day's cardio fulfilled.
Got a show this weekend. I wonder if anyone has ever calculated the calories burned in OES grooming??!

I had a fudge bar - only 100 calories :D

I may succumb to some nachos, but I only had a salad for dinner.....
and the pieces of leftover pizza are still in the fridge!
i am the weekest person in the world

i carry about 30-40 lbs od excess weight but don't really look like it i wear a size 12-14 (us) i even have a size 10 that zips up but i am 5' 10" still have a waist but i am definatley housr glass and my thighs i bigger than i really would like plus i still carry excess baby weight from my 9 and a half pound monster child 3 years ago i will have to join ww again.

i used to be really skinny the i got to 14 got my period and when from a uk size 8 to a uk size 14 just like that a big bust doesn't help either.

living with my parents it is almost imposible to lose weight so i just work on maintaining what i am at the moment my parents have now stop comenting on my smaller portions but i cook all the food and i pick while i cook

i can't wait to get back Fl to my dog that need walking and my static cycle infront of the tv ( if i want to watch it i gotta earn it)

it colder in the uk too so i eat more and heavier more fattening stuff. in FL i eat fresh fruit and salads and soups.

but i am still weak i love sweet things but jello cures me of that craving.

zoe
My bank gives out Otis Spunkmeyer cookies and the one I got last night is still in the car so it's stale. :) That's the good news. The bad news is I ate a whole bunch of soy rice chips while tv last night. :(
I think the hardest part for me is that until the Endometriosis and Insulin Resistance hit, I could eat ANYTHING. At 27 years old, I could still get into the size 4 dress I graduated 8th grade in.

When the endo hit, I went up 3 sizes in the course of one summer. Ever since I have been everything from a US 8 to a 12, only dipping back down to a 6 when I was doing my thesis and not really eating anything at all from stress.
I'm fluctuating between 10 and 12 now; but at least when i was going to the gym regularly, I was stronger and had more muscle. I'm alot "softer" now, if you get my meaning.

So I'm trying to do daily walks with the dogs, and I'm very sure that all the puppy wrangling has helped me to build up "core strength" that my last endo surgery stripped from me.
BRAVO Paula!!!! It's very discouraging that as we age weight loss becomes more difficult, one day you're young and and skinny; the next day
So glad to find this thread! I have been seriously working on South Beach for about 6 weeks and have lost 11.5 pounds so far. Just this morning, I comfortably got into a size smaller jeans, so I am really encouraged. I gained the weight after quitting smoking 5+ years ago and haven't been able (or worked hard enough) to take it off. Never had a weight problem my whole life, and now I'm in plus sizes and NOT liking it! One key I have found (for me) is to plan ahead and have plenty of "legal" food on hand to grab. Husband travels a lot, and it's too easy to opt for the bag of popcorn or frozen pizza for dinner when he's gone....
Susan, that's great news and proves just what we can do when we set our minds to it!
I am not doing so well. For me, stress = eating.

With my BIL so sick, all I have done is eat junk--- drive thru's and hospital cafeteria food is not the most healthy.

I need to break the stress eating cycle. And do it NOW!
Lori, stress eating is extremely common and at times, necessary. Maybe the next time you're at a fast food place, don't order fries. A regular burger and a salad perhaps? And watch the dressing.

I sometimes go to exercise class at lunchtime on Wednesdays. However, I was tempted to skip it today because the cafeteria menu looked so good! But I said to myself "it's only food" and it worked. I'm going to exercise class and will eat the lunch I brought.

And sometimes food is just food. I think we give it too much importance and power.
Paula, I really liked what you said about giving food importance and power. When I stopped to think about it, it makes so much sense - there is really no good reason to give a pizza that much power over me! I have found that in trying to eliminate any bad habit, the mental part must come first, then the rest is easy. Well, maybe not exactly a snap, but a lot easier than when I've struggled against the change.
I am back into my target range that mentally I've been trying to hit. Yeah, it's at the upper end and I want to be in the lower end, but it's a start! 119 and counting... :D
I've been bad; haven't really adjusted my eating AT ALL. but I did sign up to start going to the gym with a trainer. I think that will motivate me to keep the food log and eat right!

Thank you!!!
