while i've been in the uk i got a coupon for a free eye test though one of my club cards. my apointment is in 2 weeks. as i should be back in the US in 4 weeks i thought i would wait and bring my prescription for my glasses with me and get them made out there. i can live with out my glasses for a while as i don't need them for driving. in fact i have no idea where my glasses are right now and haven't seen them for about a year any way my question is where do you think would be the best buy simple wire framed is all i'm after as the only person who see me in them is hubby. i'd like them to be relatively stylish but not cost a fortune. now we are on the way bac kthere are things i'd like to get to make our holiday home seem more like home untill such time as we can move house in to a proper neighbourhood. zoe |

The style now is for heavier frames in rectangles. Not for me. I prefer wire with as little metal as necessary to hold onto my thick lenses. Can't wait until someone devlops translucent metal, a la Star Trek.
With lighter frames they are more prone to bending, something to consider with regards to your life style. Best to store them in hard cases. I suspect the less expensive frames will be plastic, not metal, but could be wrong. I just know when I go for new frames and go towards the less expensive all I find is plastic. If you haven't needed your glasses for a year, perhaps there's no change in the prescription and your old glasses will be fine....if you could find them. Still, a good idea to have an eye exam including measuring occular pressures, etc. |
oh i need my glasses get headaches from reading to much and boy do i like to read
i had expensive rimless memory ones last just can't find them (you know the ones you can srew up in a ball and they bounce back) i used to be a civil engineer and they came in handy for work hard hats and all. but i'm a housewife now and can't see that much damage coming to them. i can't wear plastic i have wonky eyes or eyebrow i haven't decided it could just be my ears lol the only reason i haven't got new ones is i've not been in one place for 3 months in the last 15 months and in all the other things they have just been forgotten hubby says got to sams or costco but i didn't know if there was other options zoe |
Walmart is pretty cheap too. I got my last pair there for @ $120.
Which reminds me.... it's time to make that eye exam appointment for myself. It's been 7 years since I was at the eye Dr. Oops. lol I also have astigmatisms... If I am remembering correctly it's both eyes. But I have been blessed with 20 X 10 vision for many years. 20 X 10 is better than 20 X 20. But my eyes get tired and I need the glasses. Haven't used them in years, but I have been wearing them while driving recently since the signs on the Freeways and street signs have been blurry right up until I get to them. If I don't need to read anything really small... I'm okay. Even though I haven't gotten a new prescription in years. My old glasses seem to be just fine. But I do think I should at least get an exam since it's been a long time. |
Costco has the best deals for glasses and contacts. Costco is a "membership" club - you have to pay an annual fee to shop there. But it's worth it. I save the membership fees on my contacts alone. (I have astigmatisms in both eyes and wear toric contacts by day and glasses at night.) |
we have membership to both sams club and costco
but hubby will have to come with me to costco as i only have a sams club card and he has the costco one zoe |
i get my contacts at costco too! but my glasses, i get at the cigna eye place (we have cigna insurance)...small wire frames...i hate the thick glasses plus with my pinhead i look a little out of proportion..
does your insurance have an eye program? |
as my insurance is none existant at the moment and we won't have any untill we get there and as we have never had medical insurance before (it all free in the uk) i have no idea how it works
but i will ask my in laws they have been over in FL 3 years now and ovoiusly have insurance zoe |
Does the National Health pay for glasses too? If it does I would get them in the U.K. |
My last good deal on glasses was at a local eye DR, I think they are part of a chain store. They had a sale - $100 for 2 pairs of single vision glasses. I got 2 cute pairs, that were in fun colors that I otherwise wouldn't have spent the money on.
It wasn't even my regular place, I just brought in a copy of my last exam prescription. |
thanks i will have a look what local when i get there then and if i can't find a super buy i'll just go to costco
the NHS only supply children with lenses and eye tests, once you are out of education/ or 16 you have to pay for everything my mums last pari cost her £400 but then she decided that after 35 years of wearing glasses she would treat herself and saved up for a pair of dior frames. my last pair where about £150 and thats not a pricey pair and cheap apri over here is about £75 plus thank you zoe |
Zoe while you are in the UK go to Asda! You can have your eyes tested in the larger stores and they have a large range of very cheap but modern frames too |
i would but we don't have a large asda near us
the largest one i know is near my aunts in chatham, kent and that a bit of a drive i'll have a look round at boots when i get my eyes tested thanks zoe |
In Florida you will find many storefronts for a company called "For Eyes."
(It's a pun... "four eyes" is a childish and slightly insulting name (in the US, anyway) to people who wear glasses.) Anyway, they can offer some good to really good prices on eyewear. They do not make glasses on premises here, the send from their lab in Florida. Perhaps you'll be near to the lab. Or check them out at www.foreyes.com |
