A move to the city

Well Velcro has just made themove from our 6 acre, 6 bed house in the country to a one bedroom apartment in the heart of Brooklyn and so far she seems to be doing quite well.

Here are my questions though

1) She does get a nervous tick around loud trucks (shaking her head violently) - is there anything I can do to help her out there?

2) She's very shy in the dog run - preferring to sit with me than to play with the other dogs. In all honesty she seems clueless as to what's appropriate behavior - again how can I help

3) There are 66 steps between our apartment and the street (we're on the 5th floor) - so far she's handling them with aplomb - but am I in danger of damaging her hips (she's 15 months)

Any hints / tips / playdates in Brooklyn would be very much appreciated

I can't answer any of your questions... but I have one of my own: What about your adaptation to such a dramatic lifestyle change??? A fifth floor walkup after how long just driving up to your own kitchen door?
You read my mind, Ron. I was thinking the same thing! Having been raised in a small city, then moving to the country when we married, I could not even begin to imagine moving back to the city. And a 5th floor walk-up! Oy! My aching back!
I was wondering the same thing Ron! Boy - that's quite an adjustment.

I don't think the stairs will damage her hips - it will probably be wonderful exercise. Now, when she's 15 YEARS old and can't do steps very well - that's a different story - you may ruin your back or hips!

In terms of being fearful of trucks - it may get better with time and as she gets used to it. However, Presley is fearful of everything - and it's just her personality - there's not much that can be done I'm afraid. You can try and expose her to it in small doses - you can also try Rescue Remedy when she's in a situation that she becomes anxious in (the dog park, etc.).

I wish you the best of Luck!

Kristen
just wanted to say good luck in your new home and am sure things will be ok
She's making a remarkable transition from country hound to urbane city pooch - but it does break my heart to think of just how big a change it has been for her...

Thanks all for your thoughts and kind words...

I love this forum

Steve
