I couldn't believe how absolutely insane people got. I mean, c'mon, do you want to ride on a broken plane? To me, it's one of those things that happens sometimes and you just have to roll with it. The poor guy working was trying his best but it was probably one of the most disorganized situations that I've ever been a part of. After making us all hang out at the gate for about an hour after they cancelled, they told the group that they had about 40 seats flying into JFK tomorrow (we were originally supposed to fly into La Guardia) so everyone got in a line for that. Then we sat down and waited some more until they told us to get in another line-- only to get to the front to find out that they had NO information on another flight, and couldn't do anything for us since we just wanted to go home (we only live about 25 minutes from the airport). So, next they sent us upstairs to a new line already filled with more angry people. Luckily, we buddied up with a really nice woman (the mother figure we needed to get the job done) and she snuck out of the line and went to talk to someone. She was very smooth and persuasive and within 10 minutes, we had all of our flight information and were on our way back home. In the end, they gave us dinner vouchers and $100 each off our next flight. We would have gotten hotel vouchers if we needed them but we came home instead. The one good part is that we got such a phenomenal deal on our flight in the first place, with the vouchers and all, we're coming out about $35 on top but I guess there were better things I could've been doing than hanging out in the airport. Also on the plus side, think of all the money I didn't blow in the city tonight! So, barring any major issues tomorrow, we're taking off at 7 a.m. Wish us luck! |

I was just going to ask (when I read your other post) if you weren't supposed to be on vacation! Oh well....it could have been quite a bit worse......like you wouldn't make a connecting flight that was to get you to a cruise ship that was leaving port early tomorrow to cruise around the Hawaiian Islands! Now THAT would be a bummer! |
That's very true-- that's why I always build buffer time into all my trips, especially if I'm on a deadline. It's nice that today was only annoying and not devastating! |
We were on our way to St. Thomas with a stopover in Philly. Got on the plane, taxied out on the runway and sat for awhile. I noticed that they were playing with the flaps ALOT. We started moving again...the wrong way. Back to the terminal. As we were heading back the pilot came on the speaker and said we had a "little" problem and to sit tight till it gets fixed.
Well we sat for about an hour and the pilot came back on the speaker and said it couldn't be fixed(it was the flaps) and that there is a flight due back from Europe in about an hour and they will refuel that plane and we will be on our way. You're right...lots of angry people. One guy went to the bathroom to smoke because he didn't want to go through the check in line again. We got a voucher for food and sat and waited. We make it to St. Thomas six hours late. Lucky for you someone in that group had a clear head and took the bull by the horns and got you re-booked. Have fun in New York!!!! but don't take a deep breath because it stinks there. |
Thank goodness for the "mother types"
Have fun on your trip!!! |
Have fun on your trip. |
When you do eventually get there "AVE A GOOD ONE"
Be sending good vibes the planes are flying on time and you get to NYC. Hey wave to me from the top of the Empire state Building. |
Well DANG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope today's flight is uneventful and you have a great trip! |
By now you should almost be boarding. Have a safe flight and enjoy New York!!!!!!!!! |
Enjoy your trip! And congrats for being cool enough to understand the basics (safety first) and not take it out on the ground crew.
Our flight from San Juan to Miami didn't take off on time due to AC issues. While I appreciated their consideration in not making us fly without AC, they made us sit on the plane - minimum AC and that was with the ground connection working - for over an hour. They had us unload, sit at the gate for another hour and finally let us go with so-so AC. We missed our connecting flight, but they arranged for us to catch another flight - and provided a bus to take us to the new gate. Unfortunately it was the wrong gate and we had to run through the entire airport to the correct gate - only to see the door was closed. We missed that flight by minutes. Eventually we made it to Orlando (I think we could have driven there faster). Our luggage showed up the next day and I have a sad story to tell. Oh, well. |
Not a great start to a vacation, but you seem to be taking it in stride
Have a great time |
