Those pictures are great! It still amazes me at times when my max will squeeze in the tiniest spot to be near us.......... |
Clipper looks like royalty or a movie star awaiting his appearance on the set seated in that chair! It's too funny and what a character he must be.
In the summer time Panda sat in one of those white plastic outdoor chairs which caused me to burst out laughing. Gotta luv Sheepies for the clowns they are! Thanks for posting these great pics. Marianne and the boys |
Hi Marianne, Fernie does the same as Panda does. Have a look at the pic below. This is Fernie and his pal Brad at a dog show. They caused quite a stir when they both sat like this and they did it regularly. LOL Fernie is on the left and Brad on the right. The guy in the middle of the furballs, is Brads owner Tom. He is such a lovely guy and so helpful when I started showing Fernie. Pity there aren't more like him around.

I love that pic too... Fernie looks like such a character!
That's great that you were able to find someone to help you... I am getting so excited about showing... and nervous! My puppy Sky is supposed to be at a Markham,Ontario show on Feb 18th 2005. Seems like a long way off, but not to me! Sometimes I can't wait, and other times I am so nervous that it really feels like the days are flying by too fast and I'm not ready! LOL Her coat is not as nice as Dancer's at that age, I think because Dancer was my little princess, frequent baths and grooming sessions every day, and she is so dainty and feminine, she kept herself clean and pretty anyway. Sky on the other hand... is my little tomboy puppy. Not delicate at all! She gets dirty 5 minutes after she is groomed, and I don't know why, but I never bathed her as much as Dancer, so I wonder if that affected her coat growth. Ah well, this one is just for practice really, she is only 6 months old, and will be 8 months at the time of the show, so still in the Junior Puppy class. |
that first picture is hilarious.
and that show picture of fernie is gorgeous! |
Great Pictures. If Pepsi had his way he would be on a couch everywhere he goes. I think he thinks he's human. As for chairs we haven't spent that much in the yard. This summer we will the real test. |
I think Fernie is wonderful! She has such personality. She is a gorgeous sheepie! I love her tail. I wish we would get into the practice of keeping a tail on our dogs here in the U.S. They look beautiful and they actually get to wag a tail as well as the whole backside!

Awww, Fernie makes me smile. He is such a beautiful boy. I would love to meet a sheepie with a tail someday, just to see it for myself. I love Fernie's big bushy tail.
Give Fernie a hug, he looks like he is so huggable he probably gets a lot of them. Stormi and co. |
Thank you guys for all your wonderful replies. I love reading them all. To those of you in the U.S. that want tails left on, why not ask before a litter is born, to leave them natural. That way you can have your sheepies with tails too. I had to wait 18 months before I found Fernies litter. All 10 of the pups kept their tails, his breeder feels the same way about docking as I do. Both parents are full tailed OES too. We do come up against it in the show ring sometimes but someone has to make a stand. I don't want Fernie to be favoured because of the tail, just fairly judged. Some judges have been brave enough to give Fernie good places and so we end our show year with a total of 9 Best of breeds, 1 Best Any Variety Pastoral and 4 group places. So you can still win with a tailed dog, it's just that bit harder and the places are all the more precious. For anyone that wants to see the Anti-Docking Alliance website, please click on the link below. You'll be able to see loads of breeds, including OES with their tails.
http://anti-dockingalliance.co.uk/index.htm Thanks again for all your replies, Fernie is now asking for his own dressing room, complete with a star on the door. LOL Love Clipper and Fernie |
I have to agree that Fernie is adorable! I love the little white tip on the end of his tail!! I think I may request a non-docked dog when I buy my Sheepie, we'll have to see!

All old english are born with a white tip at least on their tail. They are nice with the tail, but one of the most endearing things about oes is how they wiggle those fuzzy butts in happiness...lol... I would miss that if I had one with a tail. |
I love the tails too but they can't be shown in the States with tails. I'm not sure about Registration issues either. You will most likely run into problems getting a puppy from a reputable breeder in the States (and keeping the tails) because they dock them so young - they often can't identify which ones they would like to keep as show dogs until after they are docked.
Would you believe that we had 2 OES puppies, Oliver & Ozzy, with tails and our Vet convinced us they HAD to be removed - when they were 6 months old! It was horrible - Ozzy almost died - it was like removing one of their limbs! We were a little naive at the time - obviously! I'm not opposed to docking tails - I love them without tails too - but at 6 months of age - it's not a good thing! Kristen |
Why did your vet tell you they had to be removed??! |
Because he was a JERK! I don't remember exactly - but that's what we were used to - always had OES without tails - so we didn't think anything about it. We also didn't realize that it was a MAJOR surgery to remove them at that point.
Live and learn.... |

Sydney isn't a real OES - but her coloring on her tail matches exactly the coloring on her body (when her tail is in the down position). Her "white tip" matches up with the beginning of her white markings on her legs. Is that the same as an OES tail?? |
Yes- I would only request a non-docked if it were available per the breeder- and I knew they wouldn't try to dock a shopw quality animal at a later date I would never want to put a pup in danger! It's nice that some breeders offer (few and far between her in the states, due to the showing issue) it would be nice if ALL breed standards allowed for altered and non altered (by which I means ear, tails etc of course, not spays/neuters) animals to be shown. Ah well!

A friend of mine had a great dane, a gorgeous blue girl who was her top show prospect at the time, and the dog was wagging it's tail in the kitchen, excited about meal time, and got it's tail stuck in the handle of a kitchen cupboard. The dog panicked and broke the tail and it had to be amputated. It was awful! That memory alone makes me glad these guys tails are docked as newborns, their tails are not like a lab or shepherd etc... they are wide at the base and taper slightly, but they are also quite long. |
