Yeah, who's the boss in your family? Sounds like the dog. You don't tolerate that behavior at all. You use your quick noise to break his concentration. If he goes back to barking, you use it again. You use your body language to let him know you will not tolerate that. Yelling makes the problem worse because to him it's a human "bark" so he thinks you are joining in. None of the "that's OK boy they are friends" with pets. That is encouraging him with kind noise (your soft words) and your petting, soft touch.
Don't let your company try to "make up" to him. They are not to acknowledge your dog and don't you encourage them to do so. Not until everything is calm after strangers have come in, the dog senses this people are suppose to be there and you are cool with it do you allow interaction. This may take 30 minutes or more. Once the dog is calm then you can slather on the love and praise. |
Thanks....I found a whistle and it worked...I was amazed....and yes you are right the dog does run the house........"isn't he cute".........guess I will have to take over.......sometimes it just takes someone else to point that out
Thanks again |
I have a deaf sheepie and he barks constantly for no good reason at all. (We do believe this contributed to the cause of his bloat that he had last year-lots of air intake can twist a tummy) Anyhow-just a bark here & a bark there even if there is no company and when company comes over then he really picks up. He runs the house when I am home but listens to my husband & I have found the only company he does not bark at is my mom. She just turns her back to him and thats it! Amazing. |
When he barks annoyingly, put him in another room for ten minutes or so.
Then let him rejoin, repeat as needed. He'll get the message. IE it's not acceptable - and you control him. |
