The past three or so weeks he has had several bouts of loose stools that were unexplained. We thought the heat may have had something to do with it. Over the last week he has had a few bowel movements with loose stools and a few bowel movements with firm than loose stools. We brought him to the Veterinarian and he suggested that we add some fiber to our dog's diet, such as pumpkin. Our dog is not too keen on the taste of pumpkin. We thought yoghurt might help, and although our dog liked yoghurt the first time he ate it, he now does not like it. Our dog is eating twice a day and drinking water. The Veterinarian did not think it was necessary to repeat a fecal exam, as our dog had one (which was negative) and was wormed one month ago. We'd appreciate your thoughts and suggestions. Thank you in advance. |

Don't know if this is helpful, but double check your food supply
to make sure it is still fresh. A few months ago, we had about 1/4 bag left when our guy had loose stools x 2 days. I rechecked the ( dry )food and it had a strong smell. Used the new bag the next feeding and the problems resolved immediately. For firming up the stool, add a few tablespoons of cooked rice. It should help firm the stool, hopefully the problem will resolve. I would not give the yoghurt as some dogs are very sensitive to milk/dairy products. However, you may want to add just the probiotics if it is ok with your Vet. Ark Naturals has one called Gentle Digest and there are others on the market as well. If it persists, and you would like a second opinion, please pm me-we are in contact with a specialist at a Vet clinic in Vt and would be happy to give you the referral if you need it. |
I add pumpkin to my guys food when their stools get loose, and it does the job. They don't mind the taste, though. It was suggested to me, to take the pumpkin by the spoonful, put it on some foil on a cookie treat, and freeze it. That way it could be a cool snack. My guys love ice cubes and doggie ice cream, so I was going to try that.
If flavor is an issue, have you tried mixing it with an equal part of peanut butter? |
I think definitely check the food, make sure the oils in it haven't gone rancid, and pro biotics. Yogurt has such a small amount he'd have to eat a ton to make a difference and dogs don't tolerate the level of lactose in it well if they are fed much of it.
Pro biotics gives them the same thing without changing the diet. Pumpkin is a good idea too if he'll eat it. Sometimes dogs get loose stools if they eat too much too. Sometimes repeat stool checks are necessary as things like coccidia and giardia often don't show up til it's been checked 3 or 4 times. |
I'm watching this post because Barney seems to have a similar problem.
When I let him out in the morning he has a good firm stool, then if we take a walk, he'll have a very loose stool that is practically impossible to clean up. We've switched from ProPlan adult to ProPlan for sensitive stomachs, with no help. Vet has checked him and the stool and found no problem. The loose stool seems to be related to the walks and right now we think it a stress situation, probably do to the heat. If I don't walk them any subsequent stools are fine. Rice seems to work but only if its all he gets to eat. |
How is Logan doing today? Hope he is feeling better! |
Hope things are going better...
I don't know if you could use this with your dogs allergies but, I started using "Form" by Honest Kitchen as a supplement if mine get loose stools (which we have been going through lately) You have to be really careful what you give allergy dogs. (as I am sure you know) We did find that even peanut butter would bother Quin. Just from my personal experience Science Diet has never worked well for my OES BUT, I have never used z/d. That is a whole different food I am sure. Good Luck! |
