From: Natural Pet <naturalpet@SUSCOM-MAINE.NET> Subject: a blind Old English Sheepdog in need This dog is really in need of saving. The male owner brought the dog to = me a couple of weeks ago to be groomed...is now shaved down..indeed, was = a mess. This dog is in Maine. Anyhow, here is the story The dog was bought as a puppy, and kept, in spite of it being blind. = They lived in country with fenced yard. The dog is VERY friendly and = sweet..a spayed female, 8 years old. A couple of years ago, the couple = divorced, and a very nasty one I understand. The husband moved out and = the dog stayed with the wife for awhile... The wife did not want the = dog, even though she has been the original person to want an OES and was = happy with keeping the blind dog. The husband is paying all expenses for = x wife to live at same home with fence, but last year the x refused to = keep the dog anymore...probably because husband is now remarried and = current wife and daughter are EXTREMELY allergic. So last winter, the = guy rented a trailer up the road from where he is now living with new = wife, and placed the dog and 2 cats there, and went by daily to feed and = care for them...but that cost him quite a bit to pay rent and oil etc.=20 Meanwhile, he has...as he even put it, begged and said please to x wife = to keep the dog, but she flatly and totally refuses, even when a little = cash was thrown in to sweeten the deal...(I think she wants a new = "whole" dog.) and enjoys seeing her x in such a troubled mess. Divorce = does not bring the best out, in a lot of people!!!! So, the guy and dog are in a pickle...the dog is sweet, but needs a = fenced in yard. He currently has her at his house, but outside on a run = with a doghouse. He`has called me twice to see if I could find a place = for this dog. Trust me, she is very sweet, loving and all a dog should be, except. = needs a fenced yard and lots of love, and some grooming on a regular = basis. He would deliver her almost anywhere in New England, and I suspect = would do almost anything to see her get a new loving home. I believe he = might even agree to pay all medical and other bills for her life, and I = "think"he can afford to do it. He does love the dog, but is in a real = tough spot. Is`anyone able to take this on, or know of a place for her. She walks with her head to the floor feeling her way and is very clever = and smart about getting around..and is very happy and friendly Let me know..and feel free to pass this on..he can't afford another = winter paying rent and oil form the dog, and has few choices. Has Grannie Annie with NEOESR been contacted to see if she'll help?
Maybe they will post a courtesy ad for the owner like they're doing with precious little Princess, the blind girl with Colorado OES Rescue. http://neoesr.org/doghome.htm |
I believe NEOESR is getting the girl! |
How cool is that!
Thanks Kathy! |
Hi folks:
This is just a quick followup to let you all know that the dog in Maine, named Abby, has been picked up by NEOESR http://www.neoesr.org/doghome.htm. I am currently fostering the 89 pound sweetie (ok....she does need to loose a tad bit of weight). Yes, she is blind...but it isn't stopping her at all. She learned the way around the house and yard quickly and is having a great time. The cats would appreciate it if she wouldn't step on them...but as we point out to them, they can see Abby coming..so it's up to the cats to move first! Jennifer, Baxter, Cassiopia and Abby |
How cool! Thanks for the update, Jennifer. |
Thanks for fostering, Jennifer!!! |
Thank you for caring. |
Rock and Roll! Thanks for caring! |
How wonderful for her she is in a safe location receiving attention she needs and craves. Having had a blind dog I know they can learn new homes and yards.

Yep...Abby learned the way around the house and yard within a couple of days. Today we had our niece's 18 month old lab over to visit. They had a great time playing outside (and inside). We found a ball with a bell in it so Abby could join in the game of fetch and she was racing around with the crew. A bit slower than the others...and there were a few unplanned body slams, but a good time was had by all.
In addition, I've attached some bells to my shoes so that she can orient herself on me when we go for walks (and she does love her walks - even in this persistant rain that we've had in New Hampshire ). Although NEOESR hasn't had any inquiries yet about Abby , I know that whoever ends up with her will be getting a great companion. Jennifer, Baxter, Cassiopia and Abby |
That is just wonderful news! Thanks for fostering her, Jennifer!! |
