Just recently we moved our own place with an acutal backyard and real grass (exciting stuff when you've been living in a shoe box) and we can finally get a dog. The problem now is that my cat's are a firm fixture in the household and any dog we get will have to be cat friendly. Has anyone had experience with an oes and cats sharing a house? Thanks Ashley |

I do not have any cats but I know people who have and when we visit them it is the cat who annoy's the sheepies and not the other way around. I would not worry if you get a puppy they will grow up with the cats and become part of the family, I would although be a little worried if the puppy starts to purr. |
We have 3 cats and 3 dogs, one of which is an OES. The dogs WILL chase the cats, especially when they're puppies, but remember the cats can always outrun them or find a hiding place to get away. We've never had any real problems. You will find lots of people on this forum that have both, co-existing peacefully if not happily. |
my three cats have been slow to accept Tonks and Luna. The dogs have been here in the house for 7 months, and the cats are still not 100% on board. But it seems to be improving, and I think that by the 12 month mark they may all be co-habitating nicely. |
I have 2 cats, a Calico almost 13 and then a big Maine Coon who is about 18 months old. My OES Lulu (3 yrs old) loves the Maine Coon. They are best buddies. It was a little scarey at times when Reilly (the Maine Coon) was a kitten in that Lulu just wanted to play with him and sometimes carry him around and he was so little. My Calico tolerates Lulu and will just hiss and hit her if she is being a pain in the butt.
Cats have a way of putting dogs in there place when they don't want to be messed with and they eventually learn that the cats rule the house. Lulu and Michelle |
I have two OES and two cars - three when my daughter comes home. we had the dogs before we added the cats as kittens. My dogs are very laid back overall, so 10 lb. Zoey rules the home.
Yesterday, Zoey was picking on Ben, our golden Retreiver. He growled at her, but she didn't back down. He is so gentle, but was the pack leader for the dogs which is the only reason that I can figure she picks on him. Bailey, our older OS, just ignores the cats totally. Riley wants to play with them, ocassionally chases them. The cats have lots of places to get out of their way. When we got Zoey, I kept them separated when i left the house. But Zoey runs into the dog's room when I tell them "Crate," their word for their room. She has a couple of high places she can go and a passthrough to exit the room. Now that we have my Talley and my daughter's Harper, the dogs treat them the same as Zoey. We've had some word done on our house this summer that has required the dogs and cats stay away from the workers. We tried putting the cats in an upstairs room, with the dogs given the run of the rest of the upstairs. The cats cried until I put the dogs in the room with them - then everyone was quiet. I gues the cats didn't want the dogs getting to do anything they couldn't do. |
We are honetly thinking about getting Oliver a cat. He loves them! He does not have a high prey drive, so he gets a long with any animal we've encountered.
There is a cat named Montey that lives on our walk route, and the owners now refer to Montey as "Oliver's kitty". Oliver will literally sit and wait for Montey to come over to him. At that time, they will lay down together and lick each other. Some dogs just lack the prey drive, and Oliver is one of them. |
One of my puppies lives on a farm with 3 cats a pet bunny (Who is his best mate) and an array of animals from ducks, Alpacas, goats and cows. No problems at all with the variety of animal friends. The cats, bunny and him are house pets and his best mate is the bunny.
OH he is scared of the Ducks when they Quack at him, he is a wooz and runs to his mum. |

I've been doing "time with kitties" with both of the my puppies. Tonks is taking to it better than Luna. Luna gets frantic with excitement. Tonks it pretty mellow. But if any of the cats run, both are after them like a shot!

I already had Pearl the cat, who is now 13 yrs old, when I brought Violet my OES into the family at 9mts. I have sense added two Aussies China 4yrs and Asia 1yr. Everyone lives in harmony....the Aussies will sometimes try to play with Pearl and other times I've watched Pearl try and "bate" them, but usually Violet pretty much ignores Pearl. Make sure the cats have a place to escape to. If the cats have nails, they will put the OES in his place.
Good luck with which ever way you decide to go. |
My oes hates our cat, she's always chasing her. I've given up trying to get them together these days. |
wow, thanks for all the responses! That's one more tick off the doggy wish list. |
It's generally pretty easy to bring a puppy in when the cat is already in residence.
Sybil meets Frankie. Syb is only four weeks old, as I recall, but that's because I bred her. They don't have to be that young: They still get along. It helps to have a pretty confident cat. And, of course, areas the pupper can't reach help. Though in some cases they still opt to hang out together : Best of luck! Kristine |
Oh my... that second photo is precious! I dream of the day my guys all get along that well.
Admittedly, I really messed up the "introducing the cats to the dogs" stage. I didn't realize how fast the pups would grow. I know how large they get, I just didn't know it would be overnight. I should have forced a meeting of the pets back when they were all the same size. But instead i wanted to gradually introduce the cats, and before I knew it the dogs were HUGE ( and I have a couple of big cats) and they were too rambunctious for my kitties. So now I'm doing it the hard way, overseeing little meetings when the pups are calm, on "safe ground" for the cats. But my dogs don't seem to have a high "hunting" drive, and 2 of the 3 cats are getting sort of comfortable with the dogs. So I think it will turn out okay, its just going to take some time. |
We got Ludo at about 11 weeks of age, and at the time our two cats were both 3 years old. Ludo was not a big hit with the cats, because he wanted to play with them in a really rambunctious puppy way, and they wanted him to go away and never come back.
Seven months have passed and now one of our cats regards him as an irritation and will hiss and swat at him (with claws) if he gets too close. This is especially true when Ludo tries to 'pet' the cats with his giant paws. Our other cat still has a more fearful approach to him, but they've come a long way, and as Ludo calms down and learns to treat the kitties a little more respectfully, I think they'll all come to a truce. |

Laika and Tony are never far from each other, best buddies. If I go into a room and close a door I come out and the two of them are laying there waiting. very cute |
