Not OES Related: Computer Question

Hi y'all. I have a question. I have 2 kids in college, so money is always tight. We live well, but sometimes the paychecks don't quite stretch as far as we would like.

I only use the internet for email, email lists, looking up recipes, paying a couple bills, and very occationally, making hotel reservations. My husband, Tony, only uses it to look up lotto winning numbers  .

We now have Comcast high speed internet connection. It is very costly, and I'm thinking, we really don't need anything as fast or high tech. We never download music or movies or games.

Those of you who use dial up (still) are you happy? Those of you in the know about these things, do you think we're to spoiled and would be miserable going back...or do you think dial up is all we need.

Please keep in mind, at work, I'm on a T-1, so if i ever need anything real fast...I could do it there.

Thanks for you advice!
Deborah

Honestly, I don't know how anyone can go from a "T1" connection to dialup. I only do what you described above "look up recipes, email, and a few message boards" ...and there are days I want my T1 to go even faster. hehe

However, I think if it helps cut costs, ...the internet is the FIRST place you should look. I have used Netzero for a very long time and was VERY pleased with their service. It's cheaper than AOL too.

Your 30 minute visits on the net may turn into 45 min. ones... but after the initial shock, I think you guys will be okay.

I moved from the highest ethernet connection to STILL paying for a cable connection...... but it being "one step up" from a dialup. I can tell the difference but it's worth saying the $15 difference!!!

Good luck in your decision!!
I was on dial-up for the longest time, only upgraded for work purposes and when I have to pay for it myself again I'd go back to dial-up. I didn't have any problems downloading pictures from forums so I was okay.

I do a LOT on my computers, and have a router so they are all online all the time. We have high speed cable, it will download at 5mps, which is very fast, and there is no way I could ever go back to dial up. I don't think I could stand waiting for anything on dial up even if I didn't need the computers to be fast, but I'm a very impatient person anyway. LOL
We recently were able to switch to DSL through Verizon, and we'd never go back to dial-up. Towards the end of our dial-up days, I was trying to show a friend a video clip on a website, and it just would not download right. First it took forever, then the action was very choppy.

We would have switched a long time ago, but our area wasn't wired for anything other than dial-up until now. Would love to have a cable connection cause it's even faster than DSL, but again, it's not available in our area.

I also have a T-1 connection at work, which made coming home to dial-up all the more frustrating. Plus now, like Stacey said, I have a router on our computers so everyone can be online at the same time, instead of fighting and yelling, "Are you off yet??"

Cost-wise, we had a separate phone line just for the computer when we were on dial-up, so it's just a trade-off - the cost of the phone line plus a few $$ now pays for DSL.

JMHO,
Chris
