Cooling Mat

Recently we have been having some great weather. Lovely and hot and sunny, and whilst I have enjoyed it George has hated it!

He doesn't do the heat very well and there are only so many times I can soak him with a hose pipe

Now I know I'm probably the last person to discover these but I have just got him a cooling pad, and he loves it!

Its big enough for him to lie on (many of the others I had seen before weren't big enough for large dogs) and he stays dry but cool!

Took a while to get here as I had to order it from the US but now its here I finally have a happy cool dog 8) 8)

So glad George loves his cooling mat.

Stay cool 8) George!
I was just looking at cooling mats today too !?! thought I might wait until summer for one though......good to know they are a hit with others. :)
Which one did you get?

I'd be interested in knowing as well. I need to get some for the crew and am confused about size and quality.
Yes! Tell us which one you got- I think there are ones which work differently. I would love to get one for Ru. Ahhh George must love it, do they do human size? I'm cooking down here in the south east
They are really cool. Since the wigglebums stay pretty much inside and parked in front of an air conditioning vent all day, I haven't bought them one. But they are really neat and seem to work well. I'm glad that George is enjoying his!!

Little Bear, I had to read your comment twice and then remember where you are! I was thinking "what do you mean 'wait for summer??'".

I got the miraCool one. Its not the best you can buy but for how many hot days we get in the UK its ok. The fabric is quite tough so it should last.

Couple of bad points about it. The crystals are in pockets so it is not totally flat which George found a bit odd at first, and because itis soaked in water it tends to be wet so you have to put on a towel or something to stop it soaking the floor.
It is VERY heavy when it is wet too.

Hes only had it a couple of days so I will see how it goes but so far so good!!
I just got Chewie one too! :D
I ordered it from Petedge, the Coolmat III I believe it is called. It is the medium one, price was $39.99.
I filled it this weekend at the show. :D
He loves it. :hearts:
They ae acually pretty easy to make guys. (sorry my "t" isn' t working too well).

Go pick out some heavy material you like that is washable. Denium, or table cloth stuff (cloth with plastic like stuff), and buy enough to double side as large as you want it. Then go to your home depot type store and buy the crystals for planters in the milk jugs. then go get out your trusty sewing machine. Sew around 3 sides. Put 3 or 4 verticle tubes up the middle........ pour in the crystals and finish off the 4th side. Then seou have 3 or 4 horizontle tubes across trying to equalize out the crystals in the pockets you have created........... then dunk into a tub of water and watch them swell...........

i have even put them in the freezer, and then put them under a towel in a crate for trips in the car this time of year.

I believe you just saved me some considerable money :) four of anything can get expensive. doe they leak as the dog lays on them - you know compresses out the water? I wonder if you can make a waterproof outside with a zupper and then wet the crystals in an inner pouch?
your welcome you can send the excess saved check to me anytime! lol

as i said, you went them down/soak them and then wring them out. the crystals swell and hold the coolness in. Bu i would get a very heavier material so the dogs cannot chew it........and get to the crystals!

While your at it, make yourself a neck roll..........use a bandanna and fill a bit of it with the crystals and sew closed for on hot days..... ;0)

I couldn't remmeber the instructions for this this weekend, but I took a large (gallon size) zip lock bag and put in some crystals and water and refrigerated - works great. I figure we will put it inside a larger zip lock and then under the liner of the crate for this weekend's festivities. I assume if I leave the bag open - or spill out the crystals onto something else they will dry out for the winter when I don't need them - or I can add them to my plants and buy new later.
Ahaa! I was thinking about this thread only a few days ago!

Is your cooling mat still working Vicky? I want to get one for Ru, his overnight panting & drinking water wakes me up.
Yes it still works.

I dried it out at the end of last summer and put it away until recently, george still isn't keen so I think I am going to make one where the crystals are not in pockets so it doesn't go lumpy.

You can also get colling bandanas too
Really? I'll look into those at some point!
