Congratulations and super that you are taking him home with this handicap, I hope the breeder does some research to find out which line it comes from. Hope you have lots of fun. |
Congrats!! I can't wait to see pics of your Little Man.

All due respect...
It is a handicap but, nothing we can't work with. He certainly will be altered when it is time. We are getting this boy as a pet... He will be going to obedience training. We are planning on doing Therapy training for him. I have a huge heart for deaf dogs... Just losing my deaf gal Kissy... I am thrilled to haved another deaf boy in my life! |

My post was not meant as criticism and in fact I think it is wonderful people like you are there to look after these unfortunate pets and things like this can happen to any breeder. I was only stressing that I sincerly hope the breeder is looking into where it possibly came from and trying to prevent it being passed on in their lines. |
How wonderful.....!!!!
I think it is WONDERFUL that you are getting a puppy!!!! And I think it is even more WONDERFUL that you are considering training to be a therapy team. We have a few 'special needs' dogs in our program here and I can tell you from experience, they seem to have an extra bit of compassion and dedication. Quite a few years ago, I was visiting at the hearing impaired school for children and there was a hearing impaired dog that was a favorite! Obviously the children really related to him. I also visited with a three legged dog at Shriner's Hospital--again the children waited all day for him to visit. Good Luck, please keep us posted and yes!!!! PLEASE pictures when you have them!!!!! |
We are so happy here for you! What a lucky pup to have a Mom that understands and can train him. Give your little man a big welcome from us! I know how hard it was for you to lose Kissy. We'll be following this one's new adventures. I have 13 days until my guy comes home. Wow are we ever really ready |
WOO HOO..... very excited for you! Have a sweet time with your puppy. Can't wait for pics! |
Congrats Kathy & Marty! I can't wait to meet him. Have you got a name for him yet?? |
You posted it!
I can't wait to see new pictures and hear all about this special little boy. Congratulations Kathy & Marty!! And you're right Kathy, as with blindness in a dog, being deaf is not really a handicap. You find workarounds that work so well you forget they are any different. It's why at times I've caught myself tossing a treat to Kaytee. You have to experience one to really understand that there is nothing to pity. I DO agree that all steps must be taken to NOT repeat a birth defect... otherwise a breeder is being unethical in my opinion. But this is NOT a concern in this situation. This little boy will get a great training because of the club you belong to. Maybe you should write a booklet about your journey with this little deaf pup? Many people don't understand that if you take away one sense, it's just one less distraction I had a vet once that could not understand why I wanted to adopt a deaf dog (Wiley). He said there hundreds of them out there. You don't focus on what they can't do, you focus on what they can. Kaytee plays fetch outside every day with a soundless stuffed toy- we play a game similar to hot and cold. You should consider that book Gosh.. so many are "expecting" right now. |
WOW, I'm so excited for you!!!!!!!!!! |

in deference to dairymaid - there is a language difference. I do believe some of our english as a second language people are not always aware of the most recent politically correct terminology and dairymaid was right in pointing out that this is not a trait - handicap or not- that we do not want to repeat breedings on. enjoy your new puppy. |
Congratulations, Kathy! I know you've had a tough year, and this will be SO great for you! I can't wait to see pictures of the new Little Man and hear his antics. Woo-hoo!!! |
Yippee! You must be so excited. I can't wait to see him! |

Agreed. I can completely understand and sincerely appreciate Dairymaid's passion about not continuing a line with a birth defect. No one wants a dog to be born this way. And there are unethical breeders out there who continue to breed the parents despite deaf dogs being born. But not in this case. |
Congrats! I can't wait for pictures! |
Woo hoo! Congrats!!! |

I didn't mean anything in a negative way whatsoever... I apologize to dairymaid if it was taken the wrong way. |

I nominate Diane aka 3Shaggies to write the children's book! hehehe She's got lots of experience talking with little uprights |
AWWWWW CONGRATULATIONS
Can't wait to see piccys of the lil man. YAY Potty Training and Teething happening at your place real soon!!! How long to go before bubba is home ? |
Kathy,
That's so exciting! I can't wait to see the pictures of your new little guy. We're still working with Mini Moose on his sign language. He's still so excitable, it is sometimes hard to get him to pay attention for any length of time, but that's OK. I think it took less time with Chelsea, but she was only 5 months old when we got her. I think you're right when you've said that once you have a deaf dog, you truly have a soft spot in your heart for them. I'm greatful that you suggested that we take a second look at Mini Moose. He's been a lot of fun. Our friends were not surprised when we told them we were getting another deaf OES. I'm sure we'll see you and the little guy in September in Greensboro? |
He will be here Thursday early evening....
I will be there waiting! We are going to be at the picnic at Pete and Belinda's with TOES. Marty is doing a training demo, not sure what he is doing yet but, others are encouraged to participate. He will probably be setting up a Rally course. Marty can help walk you through.... Suppose my little fella will fly through the ring yet??? Can't wait to meet Mr. Mini Moose and that foster daddy Stew better be there! |
Well if you were living here already late Wednesday afternoon, not long to go now and look forward to piccys of your darling lil man. |
congratulations on your new puppy. It's almost time for you to be at the airport. |
In reply to Donners Mom, in no way did you offend me I am happy for you and I know this young boy is really lucky to be going to a good home where he will be well looked after. Unfortunately I have seen breeders who have had deaf pups in a litter using the bitch over and over again and then using a pup out of these litters to continue their lines. This in my opinion is wrong, breeders have the responsability to try and improve the breed, I feel very strongly regarding this and I will never give up hope that one day we will see the OES improve health wise. One breeder refused to use her stud dog on my bitch because she was not good enough for him, she is a Multi-Champion with 6 titles, has been shown about 75 times and never received anything less than an Excellent, her dog has at the moment no title, however this lady thinks she know it all regarding breeding. Breeding is to a certain extent trial and error and if something goes wrong the breeder has to investigate the cause of the problem and if necessary to stop breeding with the bitch / dog if they are passing on illnesses. Once again have fun with your young boy and do not forget we all like to see photo's. |
I do agree ...deafness is not a trait we want to see continue in the breed...
or any breed if we can help it. (I just like to help with the deaf ones) I respect breeders...I know nothing about it and would never attempt it ! Thanks to the breeders that are looking out for the OES! This could certainly get into a whole new topic. |
Congratulations on your new little boy!!
have you got a name yet? |
Congratulations!!! I'm thrilled for you, too. I can't wait to see pictures and videos! |
He does not have a name yet .....I am still thinking about it.
We will probably wait until we meet him!!! 24 hours and I iwll be on my way!!!! |
Well. he is here!
He is such a doll. I am just smitten! He has been a blessing for Quin... since loosing Wilby and Kismet, Quin has not been playful! Well, now he has his paws FULL! He is doing awesome with the baby! So funny to see a 100 pound boy play with an 10 pound one! He was really worked with....even at 8 weeks he is already sitting for treats and pretty well house trained!!! Walking nicely on a leash...he is a quick study! Pics to follow! |
I'm so excited for you! Congratulations!!!! |
He is a GORGEOUS little boy.
And I'm trilled that Quinn is happy about your decision too. I'm sure he was lonely. You've got to get pictures of the two of them playing together! |
What a little cutie
I can't wait to hear more and see more of him! |
He's sooooo cute. Does he have his name yet???? |
We are leaning towards Finn for his name.
He will be Finnegan O' Grady Of course he is not irish but, we like the irish names! I am guessing the pics have been seen but, thought I would share anyway! We just have to work on his little stained beautiful blue eyes! He and Quin love eachother.... So cute to see them play! Quin is being a nice big brother! He is learning signs very easy, he already sits for his treats! He potties outside everytime and he will be neutered as sson as we can... Any thoughts on that??? What is the best age to neuter a sheepie??? Anyway, we are in love!!!!!!! |
