Diarrhea, incontinence and unidentified "goop"?

Fitzwilliam (8 months old) has had stomach issues ... again ... and he's just finishing up yet another course of Metronidazole. He still has mild-ish diarrhea however - and now he's strangely incontinent. Early today he peed on the floor right in front of me - when I told him to stop, I could tell from the apologetic look on his face that he just couldn't help it, he couldn't stop - and it was a LAKE. Just now, I found a river along the floor - it looks like he was walking and peeing at the same time, right across the room.

I also found a couple of pools of "goop" on the floor: very clear & really thick fluid, almost like thickened water, culprit unknown.

I know yet another trip to the vet is in order, and it's time to get the ol' soup ladle out for some pee collection. But I dunno - this seems more complex than a UTI, doesn't it?? Does this combination of symptoms ring a bell with anyone?

**reaching for the panic button**

Could the goop have come from the mouth, vomiting water after it had been mixed with saliva?

Poor guy. He is really having trouble with this plumbing.

I wonder if the Metronidazole has left him with a UTI now?

Since he's so tender right now, I wonder if a specialty diet would help...just which one is ?? For example for UTI vet's have access to food high in protein and phosphorus. For Intestinal problems those food are bland, low residue.

And I'm assuming he's had his thyroid checked and not just the normal test, but the extended. Poor guy, hope he feels better soon.

Take in a sterile urine sample... also ask about struvite crystals and see if the PH is right. Probably not a problem but something to consider. Panda had crystals at 10 months and it causes such a strong urge to go that they just can't help it.

I agree with Susan... the pools sound like water/mucus throw-up but definitely talk to the vet to be sure. I wonder if the Metronidazole might have caused some stomach upset.

We've tried the low residue food before and it worked fine. You might also ask about adding a probitotic (not just yogurt but a powdered probiotic). Antibiotics can kill the good bacteria in the gut.
An update:

Metronidazole CAN cause all the symptoms I described above - incontinence (though very rare); nausea/vomitting, and even the diarrhea which it is meant to treat are more common side effects. Now that Fitzwilliam is off Metronidazole, he's doing much better. That and the fact that he threw up a sock which was hiding in his stomach for who knows how long. His fourth sock, in fact. I don't know why he eats them or how he finds them, sneaky little brat. SIGH.

The vet has insisted that I put Fitz back on Medical Gastro Formula and keep him on it permanently. I got a very strong look and voice from her on this subject, she put her foot down in no uncertain terms - so Medical Gastro Formula it is (though it has a high corn content, the vet says if Fitz develops skin problems, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.)

And I just got Fitz some Bak Pack Plus (probiotic).

So ... knock on wood, all's well! Except for the sock eating!
Just out of curiousity - what is Medical Gastro Formula - some kind of prescription diet?

Maybe if you put him on a low sock diet, that would be sufficient?

Yep, Medical Gastro is a Canadian prescription diet. Gastro is a low protein, low fat formula, very easily digestible. Unfortunately, corn is listed as the first ingredient, which might not be a good thing long term? Fitzwilliam's tummy does do very well on it though - and with his history, that's currently the most important concern. It's strange though: his behaviour changes when he's on this food, maybe because the food is low protein - I think he's somewhat lower energy, not quite so intense. I'm not complaining about that though! Oh no, not complaining at all!

 I definitely need to put him on a low sock diet - even better: a NO sock diet.

Well, for once I agree with you

She is bored out of her mind with me being so busy and then on top of that so tired when I get home. Plus she had to play second fiddle to her sister over a recent long weekend. [soft strums of fiddling in the background] She is just terribly unhappy and she wants us all to know about it.

Saturday morning I woke up with the remains of the pizza cutter in my bed. Maybe because she couldn't find a horse's head...?

I AM concerned...

Kristine
