Dog Influenza

Hi All,
We are evidently having a fairly significant outbreak of Dog Influenza in the NYC area with the majority of the cases being seen in NJ. This is a link to the story that ran on the local NBC news affiliate both yesterday and today. Suggestions are being made to stay away from dog parks, dog shows, kennels pet stores and other areas where dogs congregate. Something to be aware of!

Vets, kennel owners urged to be on lookout for dog flu

The first confirmed cases of canine influenza have hit Mercer County in recent weeks and state animal health officials are urging veterinarians and kennel owners statewide to be on the lookout for the potentially fatal virus.

Weber's Boarding and Training, a kennel on Route 1 in West Windsor, voluntarily shut down for two weeks to quell an outbreak that hospitalized half a dozen dogs being boarded there, officials have confirmed.

The facility reopened on Monday.

"We have no idea where it started," said David Horowitz, kennel owner. "It's something that every facility is going to be dealing with because dogs have no natural immunity to the disease."

The cases are the first confirmed in Mercer County since the virus, commonly known as dog flu, began spreading through the nation's dogs three years ago. Highly contagious, and with no known vaccine available to cure it, the flu is most easily contracted in places where dogs gather -- kennels, dog shows, animal shelters, grooming salons and dog parks.

The virus can also be transmitted by humans who have contact with multiple dogs.

Symptoms, which appear two to five days after exposure, include a low-grade fever, nasal discharge, and a persistent cough that could last up to three weeks. Severe cases include a high fever, increased respiratory rates with difficulty breathing, and other indications of pneumonia.

The state Department of Agriculture says cases have also been confirmed in Burlington and Sussex counties.

"At this time, several hundred dogs have become ill with one reported fatality associated with those outbreaks," said state vet Colin Campbell in a notice to veterinarians and animal facility managers statewide.

Campbell said the cases are the first reported since the virus hit New Jersey in 2005.

"There seems to be a new outbreak," Campbell said. "I've talked to about 40 vets in the past four or five weeks. We feel it's pretty widely dispersed."

The virus, which first struck Florida racing greyhounds in 2004, began making headlines in 2005 when pets across the nation fell ill with the virus.

Nancy Simmons, a dog groomer in Lawrence, said she's being ultra-careful in screening dogs for appointments.

"I'm asking the owners if the dogs have been boarded or gone to puppy day care in the last two weeks," she said. "Any social situation puts a dog at risk."

She's also urging her clients to protect their dogs from possible exposure.

"I'm encouraging them to stay away from dog parks, (pet stores) and any social situation where there are multiple dogs," she said. "Right now we have an outbreak. It will go away if people use common sense."
My boy had the dog flu as a small pup.. I think he was about 12 or 13 weeks old when he got it.. the only thing I can figure is he got it from the dog park.. I was scared.. to say the least.. but he quickly got over it with antibiotics and steroids. We were living in Northern KY at the time.. the vet said the virus started with Greyhounds in Florida. I am just thankful we caught it before it was too bad.
