Human Medical Question: BUN Levels

I know alot of you out there know alot about medical stuff, so I'm tossing out this question, hoping to get a good explaination.

I recently had a blood workup (just routine stuff). Everything came back great. Except my BUN results. They were slightly elevated with a reading of 27 (I guess high normal is 20). My doctor explained it to me, a couple times, but I couldn't get it, so I stopped asking, and even though I've lost so much weight (48 pounds) my blood pressure is still high and I'm on meds for it.

So, with egg on my face, can someone out there explain to me what this means. She seems "slightly" concerned, but not alot. She suggested we retest in a couple months, and that in the meantime I do the poo smear test (gross..ain't gonna do it, but didn't tell her that).

So...should I be concerned, or could that test have just been a quirk? I know it has something to do with kidney function.

Thanks!

I've heard several people who are on the adkins diet [i know you're not] experience high BUN levels. Too much protein in their diet, which as someone with severe kidney problems, red meat is "supposed" to be a no no for me. Also, if you're dehydrated, BUN levels can be drastically increased.
Hmmmm....my red meat consumption is WAY down, and my water consumption is WAY up.

I don't know what the range for this count can be. I mean, if the total range is up to 1000, 27 "ain't so bad", but it the top of the range is 30...ut oh.

I maybe overracting because my sister alway had kidney problems, and my mother had a propensity to get kidney infections. But this has not been the case for me. Although, last year I did pass a kidney stone. :excited:
BUN is blood urea nitrogen

can be caused by excessive protein intake, exercise, low water intake (dehydration), certain drugs, intestinal bleeding, kidney damage, heart failure.

Let's just go with too much exercise and not enough water intake......
Deb,

Being totally ignorant about BUN levels, I googled it and received the following link:

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency ... Definition
it said normal is 7-20. Listed things that affect it and much more.
Did they do a creatinine too?

An elevated BUN is r/t the kidneys. It usually is linked with the creatinine to determine if kidney function is an issue.

Check your meds too, to see if they can cause elevated labs.

Also, have you ever had it tested before? and if so, how do the numbers compare? Knowing what a "normal" for you is also important.

For example, I run really low platelets, but it is a normal for me.
I hope you get it figured out and it turns out to be nothing really terrible.

(I would LOOOOVVEE to know what you did to loose 48lbs... I am trying and it is so slow going for me... any advice)

Let us know what you find out and if it gets corrected!!

Good luck!
An elevated BUN should be followed up on but is not necessarily a cause for concern. As already mentioned; dehydration, high protein intake, rapid weight loss causing catabolism as well as many serious problems. I assume your Dr ordered a Creatinine level which combined with the BUN is more telling.

Some medications can cause Liver damage which is why anyone on prescription meds should have a CMP done yearly.

ooops, just saw Dawn's response (great minds think alike  )
Shheeeeesh. Women.

Some are concerned that their buns are too low, and other that their BUNs are too high.

Make up your minds!

Are you saying that if you try to raise your low buns with exercise, your BUNs may get too high?
Or that it's better to have 2 low buns next to each other rather than two high BUNs in a row?

OK, I'm outta here. :sidestep:

Ok Ok...now I have a headache on top of my high buns!
I know I have high protein levels when I'm on my period. I wonder if it raises your BUN level, and if that is also a possibility for you ...not that you should share whether you had a visitor or not then. :P
I thought that this was going to be a hair related question. I was going to tell you to lay off the updos.

Hmmm...I haven't had a "visitor" since 1998!!! Don't think that's it!
