My dogs are conspiring to kill me or at least seriously injure me. At the dog park(of course), Gar is playing roughly with another dog and there are five or six more dogs trying to horn in and I can see this was not going to end up good if I didn't stop it. So I try to get Gar, or get in between the dogs and somehow I got hit from behind, my feet fly up in the air and I land on my back half on top of Simon. Oh yeah, that hurt. This time there are witnesses and people are asking if I'm alright. Slowly get up and still in a bent position I check on Simon. He seems to be ok, but me, not so much. I finally get straightened up and oh my gosh it hurts. I go for a SLOW walk with the dogs thinking the pain will stop. It doesn't. Its on my side, almost to the back. It hurts to move, it hurts to breath. I took some ibuprofen and it doesn't hurt as much. Dh is bugging me to go to ER and I know there is nothing they can do. They can do x-rays and say you have a broken rib...or not, and take ibuprofen and ice it. Heck I can do that without a four hour wait in the ER. |

They can tape you up which should help with the pain...I would go if the pain is that bad. |
They don't tape ribs anymore. Found out that people couldn't breathe properly with their ribs taped. So, not only was the rib broken, they also now have pneumonia. Try coughing w/ ribs broken....
But, it would be wise to get an xray. 1- to find out if there is a fracture. 2- to make sure that there are no sharp edges.....they tend to poke neighboring organs....lungs especially. Don't want to find yourself gasping for breath in a day or 2. That was a crappy deal, Pam. I am in the same boat as you, we just don't bouce as well as we used to. |
Guess I am showing my age...or I haven't been around anyone with a broken rib in a long time. Thanks for the info Dawn.
BTW...Chewie is looking awesome!!!! |

Thanks Dawn, it hurts to laugh too!!! |
Pam, my stubborn friend Pam who works in a hospital and decides to doctor herself???? I will be checking on you. It sounds like you should at least get an xray. If not in the er, go to your primary or an urgent care tomorrow. Those boys are really roughing you up this year hey?
Let me know if I can do anything to help. Doreen |

Sorry I guess I can't spell anymore. This laptop keyboard is taking some getting used to. Hopefully it is nothing, but you really should get it checked out....and this is from the nurse who wasn't going to the doctor when she fell off her horse. Not until I couldn't move my arm and it turned blue.. geez. |
Apparently if you work in a hospital...you want to avoid having to go yourself...hmmmm. |

BTW...Chewie is looking awesome!!!! I need to use my trauma nurse certification for something - why not for my friends?? Thanks - my slow bloomer boy IS really looking good Of course Sunny deserves a lot of credit - she did her usual magic right before the show. |
I think you should listen to these people and GET LOOKED AT. My mom was painting several years ago and fell trying to go from the counter back onto the ladder (painting trim above cupboards), missed, fell to the floor.
Described it just the way you did and she didn't tell anyone for 2 days. Just cleaned up her paint stuff and went to bed. When I found out she was still in pain I took her in and sure enough ..... broken rib. Stubborn People!! |
Sorry to hear of your adventure but now please take care of yourself, |
So how are you feeling Pam? Did you go get an x-ray?? |
Hope you feel better soon.
I've had broken ribs & a collapsed lung. No fun! |
You asked! Ah ha! Another vicitm of an adventure with a four-legged loved one! I have endured two broken ribs in my recent past and one episode of torn rib cartilege last August: all equal in pain and discomfort.
Each case was different: 1) Fell backwards off Merlin in Bermuda when he spooked at a boarder climbing along a cliff face above us, trying to rescue a cat. Did I see the Doctor? No! I used an ice pack, rum and coke and sat up all night. I also went ahead to a conference in Washington two days later. Needless to say, I had trouble paying attention to the conference. Met a friend at the conference who insisted on telling me jokes as we walked (me painfully) over to Georgetown for supper. On the flight home, we were diverted to Nantucket, with all that entails. By then , one week later, the rib was healing. I re-injured it in a couging fit in the middle of the night at the hotel where we stayed. On my return, I saw the Doctor, and after an xray, he said: "You have a broken rib". Remedy: Ice, anagesics and rest! 2) Getting ready to ride Merlin in an indoor arena in Alberta. My back was really sore and I had trouble mounting. By the time I was able to swing my right leg over his back,he misred my signal and stepped forward just as I vaulted painfully up... and over...on to the ground on the other side! As I crawled to my feet, I knew without a doubt that the rib on the other side was broken. I was also laughing and crying because it was very funny: no one saw me fall. darn! Merlin waited patiently while I got on his back and finished our practice. Groomed him and drove one hour home! Did I see the doctor? No: rum and coke, ice packs etc., sitting up all night. sigh! At least I didn't fly anywhere. Eventually saw the doctor who laughed when I told him what had happened. 3) Last August, I fell in the cemetery while walking Willoughby. Familiar pain told me something was wrong. Saw the doctor one month later and found that I was lucky to have escaped a collapsed lung and pneumonia. |
It's an occupasional thing.......nurses dont go to Dr's or hospitals unless it's the last leg.......
I feel for you....... remember last summer when i fell on my patio the first day Norm came home? tore all the cartlidge in my breastbone... THAT hurt like a real sucker! I thought i had broken multi ribs for sure with that one. I remember when our Borzoi was racing and racing around the yard...... and clipped me from behind like that. Norm swore my feet were 5 feet in the air above my head........... feel better. |
So Pam, did you go in??
Are you feeling any better? |
I went to Urgi-Med and got it x-rayed. No broken bones, just a significant rib injury(whatever that means). I just know it hurts like the dickens. The Dr. did give me Vicadin(just call me loopy) to help me sleep.
As I'm sitting her trying to take shallow breaths I'm thinking of all the injuries I've had since we got Gar. By gosh, I think its a plot. Or...maybe thats why he went into rescue. The folks who had him kept getting hurt...hmmmm |
Glad you went in.
Take the meds, then do your deep breathing. Trust me, you don't want to get pneumonia! Hmm, maybe Gar has a plot going.... I hope you feel well enough to come visit us at the Waukesha show this weekend. |
