Wish me luck. PS Just bought an Andis clipper |
|
Things are not going well. Gar snapped at me. |
Make sure the blades don't get too hot.... don't forget the to oil.
Pepsi bites when I do his feet.... he also sits down when I try to do his rear. Good Luck! |
It will go fine. Edgar usually ends up being groomed twice. First the cut or shave and then the next day I go back and finish up things I missed or don't like how I did. Edgar also spends his whole time trying to sit down, or slobbering on my head, or trying to eat his clipped hair, or moving around trying to avoid the clippers, or trying to nibble the clippers. |

I feel it's expected the first few times. They get used to it from my experience if you hold your own. I'm a meanie though. I tell them, "you're getting to get clipped, you're going to deal with it, and there's no getting around it ...you hear?!" Followed by me stomping my feet on the ground several times. It gets better, I promise. |
Short sessions and a pocketful of kibble!
KEEP THE BLADE(S) COOL!!! |
Well, I'm done. The clipper we got is an andis, its one speed and I guess I expected more. It took foooorrrrreeever, and I know there's touchups to do. Gar's head and back look pretty good but it went downhill from there.
Any helpful hints would be greatly appreciated. |
Give him a bath and shave again. The bath in between gets all the loose hairs off and, once he's clean and dry, it'll be a lot easier to see the parts you missed. |
Be sure to clean the protective coating off new blades by washing in blade wash or solvent.
I buy two blades of the same# and alternate during a shavedown to keep them cool and prevent burning the dog. Place hot blades on a cool tile or piece of metal to speed up the cooling process. Keep blades clean by dipping the blades of a running clippers into a jar of blade wash. Helps lubricate, too, but doesn't replace the need to oil as well. What model Andis clippers did you buy? With clippers, you get what you pay for so spending a little extra to get more power is the way to go when you have multiple OES to shave down. |
How brave of you - I have been thinking about the doing the same thing but keep chickening out. We need pictures! Remember - it is hair and it will grow back. I am sure you did a great job. |
Don't do what I did to one of my sons once - and cut the tip of an ear off! |
First clips are ragged, don't worry about it. They get better.......sometimes. Fortunately the hair comes back quickly.
Jack is a real trooper when it comes to clip time. He's very stoic and cooperative.......up to feet time. Then it's "don't touch me." He can't go around looking like a Clydesdale. He'll let me file his nails, play toesies, but no clipper. I'm wondering if a smaller clipper head would work better....hmmmm Hubby wants to do MO today with the new clipper blade.........I'd rather go back to bed We'll see. I fear she's a bit too "oily" right now but would rather bathe her afterwards. As she gets older she gets "oilier." Maybe a brush out first will suffice. We only have one of these new blades so it may be a multi day clip job. groan. |
