puppy herding older dog

My new 11 week old oes Brodie has very strong herding instincts.
So far my 7 year old oes Daisy Mae has been so tolerant of the puppy.

I make sure Daisy Mae eats first and goes through doors and gates first and they are getting along fairly well especially in the house.

The problem is that Brodie will jump in front of Daisy Mae and nip at her legs when they are running or walking out in the yard. Daisy Mae is being too nice and just stops. I go and stop the puppy but it doesn't seem to be getting better.

How should I show the puppy that this is not okay?

Also, at what age do you think I should be able to take them out on a walk together? I have been walking the separately.

At 11 weeks old puppy still has a puppy license so can get away with nonsense like what you describe. If Daisy Mae is a normal dog, she will start increasingly correcting Brodie for his rude behavior. And then one day when his license expires (and it can happen just like that) he will cross the line one time too many and she will put him in his place in a way that he'll remember, but without hurting him. At least that's normal dog behavior. You shouldn't have to intervene unless she's too nice to him in which case you have to provide her a break from the little bugger at least.

Even my most tolerant bitches will eventually explain what's what to an obnoxious puppy.

Let Daisy handle it. It will be noisey and lightning fast......but stay out of it. Puppy will cry and run off but it will only last a short time. I suspect they'll be good buds.

Well, I'm always concerned about young puppies out in public picking up strange virus' on their walks until they are completely finished with their puppy vaccinations. In fact I know some owners who will not let their puppy's paws hit the ground until they are 12-16 weeks old for fear of diseases.

So hold on walking the little squirt around the neighborhood. When she's ready, do walk her with Daisy. Seeing how the big dogs walk will help her.
duffy did that to my derby but when i walked them he stop doing it.. maybe on a leash you could try it one on each side of you.. good luck
When Heart came at 8 weeks, she also tried to herd Pearl, my 11 yr old. Peal was a good sport for a while and then one day....she "smacked" her down (with her paw).

She still herds Cosmo, the 4 yr old Beardie--He doesn't seem to mind, so why should I???

There are times when I really want to get involved, but, since she has never tried anything (nipping, running, etc) on the grandkids, I feel the dogs can work it out themselves.....
