Does anyone else have this problem? How do I coax him into going for a walk? The only thing he seems to want to do is play with the garden hose or jump in the car and sleep there all day (I think just incase we leave) and forget to take him. |

Is it hot where you are? Oscar is less active when the temps go up, though he has never turned down an opportunity for a walk and a chance to "mark" his territory .
Has he been to a vet recently? Sometimes lethargy can be a sign of a health issue, like hypothyroidism. If everything checks out okay, I would fill my pocket with some of his favorite treats, start off briskly with a goodie in front of his nose, and off you go. Laurie and Oscar |
Also if it's hot there he may be uncomfortable walking on hot surfaces.
Maybe you've trained him too well and he assumes you want him to stay. Come up with a new word to mean "we are going out this gate for a walk and are going to have a wonderful time." Find a funny work.......frisbeeeeee! so there's no misunderstanding for him. While on the walk, vary your route, vary your speed and have a special treat for the furthest part of the walk. If he were a child you might just happen to end up at the ice cream stand. You may have to pack something special, but share it with him. Lots of good vibes, nice touches, etc should do the trick. If he truly doesn't want to walk, I'd talk to the vet about hip or back problems, sight problems. |
We got him checked out a while ago as was doing a lot of wimpering when he would get up from sleeping. The vet said his hips etc were ok and just gave up some pain killers and told us to stop getting him to chase the hose and jump up for sticks. Since we have done that the aches and pains seem to have gone. But never thought of his eyes or other bits being a problem. Will look into that one
Is not hot as we live in Scotland I keep his coat quite short but I am thinking about clipping him this week-end to see if that makes a difference. I have tried different routes, running, throwing things but he is not interested in going places apart from peoples gardens. At a push I am managing to get him out for a walk once a week. He does chew and lick his paws consantanly but has always done since he was a puppy and hasn't stopped him walking bfore. He is getting more tellings off lately for wanting to eat all of the baby's food and I think his nose is a bit out of joint with our 9 month baby. Does you think these may have something to do with it. |
Does he let you play with his toes? Even squeeze a little? Maybe he has arthritis in his feet and it just hurts to walk. We most often think about hips, spine, shoulders, but those feet can also hurt.
Yes, he may feel he is no longer #1 in your eyes and a bit put off. When baby is down for a nap, does your 4 pawed baby get extra attention? Clipping will be a nice bonding experience as long as you make a big fuss over him. Since he's already sleeping in the car, how about a ride to someplace new to walk? |
I have this problem with George during the summer. He is happy enough once he gets out but getting him there is hard work!
We have tried all the things that normally make him run out the house (knocking on the door, playing with the hose pipe etc) the problem is once you have done them a few times he gets wise to it. He is ok when the winter comes again but until then......he will continue to be stubborn! |
Did you catch the post elsewhere, or maybe it was in my reading today....dogs who resist walking may be hypothryoid....did the vet check his thyroid?
Otherwise sounds like a head strong boy. |
