A few days ago we noticed Barney sitting on the kitchen floor and he was trembling. It was very subtle--I was making dinner and didn't notice until I looked directly at him, so it was shaking like convulsion or anything. It was like he was cold--that kind of shivering. Aside from going to the back door to ask to be let out, he seemed perfectly normal otherwise (he never asks to go outside, so that was unusual, but it was also around the time that we take him out so it wasn't that strange that he had to go at that point). My husband's pager was going off a lot which is a really high pitch and loud, so we were thinking maybe it was causing him to be scared and shake, although he isn't usually scared of noises. But a few weeks ago the fire alarm kept going off in the middle of the night and it scared him and he peed in the house. So the shaking the other night didn't last all that long. But this morning we were walking down the stairs and he walked into the wall several times and it looked almost like his back legs were working separately from the rest of his body. He seems fine now and during this whole time he's been eating/pooping/acting normal. Does it sound like any of this is connected and what is it? |

Oh Dear. Doesn't sound good. I am hoping it is nothing to worry about.
It sounds a lot like how our Tipsy began before she passed away. She had Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia. PLEASE KNOW that I am NOT NOT NOT trying to scare you. This may be something simple. Reading it just reminded me how I would have described Tipsy before she got really bad. Please... let us know what the vet says. |
I have nothing to offer except my concern. Keep us posted!!
Ty often shakes and trembles but that is apaprently a small white dog characteristic. |
So I just talked to the vet and they said there's not much to do right now except to watch him to see if it keep happening
Do you think this has anything to do with his hip displaysia? |
Is it from pain? I know Tasker is having a great deal of difficulty with his back end, I have noticed when he gets up or down he shaes a bit. |
The back legs looking like they're working separately from the rest of his body may be pain from his hip dysplasia. Has he started having more trouble getting up/down? Can the vet x-ray him again to see if it's deteriorated any more? |
Oh poor thing. I hope whatever it is, it goes away or doesn't cause him too much pain. **hugs** |
The first thing I thought of was a seizure of some sort. |
i dont know steph....poor baby barns!
the vet didnt seem overly concerned? can you take him in any way for a blood workup and xrays? walking into walls doesnt sound good....that would freak me out! give him an extra kiss on top of his nose from me and panda! |
Did he spend a lot of time outside yesterday?
Lacey had those same symptoms with heat exhaustion last summer. She trembled and shook the entire night and looked confused. |
Steph sorry to hear about Barney hoping it is nothing too bad.
Keep a notebook handy and write down when you see him doing it if he does again. I am wondering also when the fire alarm went off if Barney might of slipped a disk in his backbone, something along those lines. If there is a spinal problem it interrupts the signals to the backend. Prior to that has he been normal before the fire alarm went off? Keep the notebook handy and write any unusual behaviour in him, like shaking, how long it lasts, backend and if he looses a bit of co-ordination there so if you have to see the vet, you have all the details. Keep us posted steph and sending cyber hugs for darling Barney. |
Thanks for all the good thoughts and suggestions as to what's wrong.
Nope, the vet didn't seem overly concerned. Just said to watch him. Nope, Barney is not an outside dog, so he wouldn't have been too hot from being outside. You should see this dog drag his heels when he has to go out and then go as fast as possible and sprint back up the stairs. I thought of seizures, but he seemed with it the whole time, and I would think that with seizures you'd be out of it? Lisa--good idea about keeping the notebook, although I hope it doesn't happen enough (or ever again!) to need a notebook to document it. He's probably just trying to get attention now that he's not getting as much since Taylor's been here (just kidding!) |
I am sorry, I hope everything works out for Barney!
They can actually have "absent seizures" where they can have some signs but, not all. I have also been told that trembling can come from low potassium (we used to have to give Mandy a banana a day, with peanut butter no less or she wouldn't eat it) Those are things my vet has mentioned to me. Good Luck! |
Hannah and Copper have exhibited that same behavior when our smoke alarm went off. Same exact behaviors you described and they ran outside around the side of the house as far from the noise as possible. Our other sheepie was the same exact way too. Very pitiful and distressing.
Hope Barney is back to normal. |
