Then on Friday morning, Baggins just wasn't himself. He was lethargic and unresponsive where he is usually bright and cheerful. He just wanted to sleep. His gums were so pale and his breathing labored.I took him on a walk and he sat down in the grass after 3 houses. He came back and sat in the grass. He saw a dog go by and didn't even bark. Baggins is usually a fierce defender of his turf, barking and charging at dogs going by. That's when I knew something was seriously wrong and took him to the Vet. I was imagining that he might have eaten something poisonous, perhaps something was lodged in his belly or a bone had punctured something -- various things that could be causing this and could be treated. I did not imagine what they found. An ultrasound showed that his body and lungs had numerous tumors and that some had ruptured and he was bleeding himself to death internally. They told me there was nothing they could do for him medically or surgically and that he would die within hours or days. I was in complete shock. The Vet said that this kind of cancer can develop so quickly that all owners ever notice are a few "off days" before it was too late. I had to call his owners on vacation (it was the middle of the night where they were) and tell them what was happening. They talked to the Vet and agreed it would be better for Baggins to have him PTS rather than let the cancer and the bleeding run its course. As it happens, Baggins former neighbor/petsitter was now a Vet student and was working in the clinic that night. She was heart broken that she couldn't do anything more than be there for him in the end. He was also joined by his "aunt" -- sister of his owner's family. He had perked up enough from a temporary cessation of the bleeding plus supplemental oxygen so we were able to take him on a last, gentle walk before the poor guy got drowsy. We let him eat whatever he found on the sidewalk. The Vet student neighbor/petsitter fed him her dinner of rotisserie chicken. Then we said goodbye a tired, well-fed, Baggins who left us far too early, wanting more. The entire neighborhood will miss him. Everyone has a Baggins story to tell. Sleep peacefully, sweet cuddly boy! |

Oh Val that is so sad. He sounded like a wonderful dog. That is so hard for your neighbors - I cannot even imagine. At least his aunt and all of you were there for him. |
Oh goodness....I'm so sorry. Bless you, Baggins. |
I'm sorry to hear about Baggins.
I am sure he was happy with his final days with you. Please send my sympathies to his owners. |
That's so sad, I'm so sorry, Val. How old was he? I got the impression from past posts that he was a relatively young dog. |
Oh Val, I am so sorry!!!!!!! How lucky Baggins was to have you if his parents couldn't be there. |
Val.. I agree with Ginny....You were meant to be with him to help him and in the end to comfort him....I am so sorry. |
Oh how sad, Val. I'm so sorry for your loss, and having to be the bearer of this terrible news to his family. What a horrible thing you have gone through. Poor baggins.
What a sad day. |

He was a healthy (looking), active 11. Nothing seemed to be wrong with him. He was always smiling and wagging his tail in the front yard next door. Sometimes, he'd sneak out and come knock on my door for a visit. He was such a sweet, cheerful dog. It is just a complete shock. His family feels awful. I don't think it will truly hit them til they come home to a quiet, empty house. |
Oh, Val, how tragic! Poor Baggins!
If it had to be his time, I'm sure your neighbors are thankful that he was with you rather than being kenneled somewhere. They are facing a hard time when they get back to a quiet home. They are probably facing a hard time finishing up their vacation, too. Please give them my sympathies. Hugs to you as well, as I know you feel this loss as much as they do. |
OH NO... So very sad. Please be thankful you were there to comfort him in the end and not some stranger. I wish the family the best. I just couldn't imagine being on vacation and getting THAT kind of news. I agree with everyone else... it will be such a shock when the get home and it hits them... Oh geesh. How sad.
At least he went to a better place with a tummy full of nice Chicken! |
What a heartbreaking shock! I can hardly imagine how difficult this had to be for your, Val. So sorry for your loss. |
THank you for beeing there for him...how sad he is gone. I so glad he had so much fun with you - his poor poor parents though |
I'm so sorry Val, how sad for you and the family.
I am glad you were the one taking such good care of him and that his last days were fun-filled with playing with Maggie. Our cat went that fast too. One day he was fine and the next he was barely getting up. His stomach cancer had bled out into his colon. |
I'm so sorry Val. It is a terrible shock when it happens so quickly. The same happened to my OES-mix and for the same reason but with her kidneys.
I hope you can take comfort in knowing that you gave him a fabulous last few days. What a great time he must have had. And the kindness that people showed him was very heartwarming when his owners couldn't be there to say goodbye themselves. This had to be very difficult on YOU... but you did your very best and I bet Baggins and his owners thank you for being there for him/them. |
I am so sorry. Please let the rest of his family know that we join them in celebrating Baggins' life and mourning his passing. |
i am so very sorry Val, tell Baggins family we are all thinking about them |
I'm so sorry Val!! Baggins sure was a sweet looking fella. I'm glad he was at least with someone who knew and loved him so that he didn't have to go alone. Thanks for being there with him!
R.I.P. sweet Baggins |
Oh, that is so sad.
His poor family being gone - and poor you to have to call them and give them the awful news. And poor Baggins in pain. He always seemed like such a fun, happy dog - now he is no longer in pain and can hang out with Chum. |
Val,
I'm sorry for your loss, and that of your neighbors. I found myself in a similar situation once with my sister's dog, so I know how difficult it is to be in that position. At least that horrible disease isn't eating away at him any more and he's healthy again! |
Val that is so so sad. But, at least he was with you and not in some kennels with strangers. I bet you are heart broken. He looked a super dog, and at least he had a peaceful passing surrounded by love. |
Baggins was such a great dog )and adorable too).
I am So sorry, I know how much he will be missed. sue |
Oh how sad! He sounds like he was a peppy guy and so cute! |
wow! Poor Baggins and his family....coming home to that empty house will not be a good feeling...

Typing through tears, this is exactly the same thing that happened to my dear Ollie.
Val my heart goes out to you and Baggins family. Godspeed dear Baggins! |
god speed dear Baggins, god speed |
Val, I'm so sorry for you and his family. He was surely a cute boy. I'm sure he had the best last few days at your home that anyone could wish for. |
