We had 2 nasty experiences years ago with our oes cross getting scared and she just ran..home luckily! One of my yorkies did the same and someone caught her at the road side! So Summer hadnt been let off! Last night hubby let her off in the park , well I made him just drop her training leash to start with, and then let her off the leash. She was really good and kept coming back to us! Still got the yorkie on the leash she is totally untrained (my fault) so Summer kept coming back to Tilly. A lady I know has 5 yorkies and they just run around and we met them. Summer was ecstatic 5 little Tillies after they played Summer started to follow the yorkies Tilly barked and she ran beck to us! |

Haha! Tilly has Summer under control |
I have always had a fear of letting SamSun off of his leash. The other Sunday I tested him just to see where he would go without the leash for the first time. SamSun went in the backyard, pottied, and came right back to the front door and wanted in. I was very impressed! Now there have been a couple of times where SamSun has wanted to wander in the neighbor's yard or go across the street. This absolutely terrifies me. Even though we live on a rural road way off the main highway, I just don't want anything to happen to him. |
We have some dogs we can and some we can't...
I was walking my little old foster man Monty tonight, he had a leash on but, he is so people oriented he doesn't need it. I dropped his leash and any time he got a few feet from me I would say Monty "wait" and he would! Lulu and Monty both know where the treats are and they are not going to mess that up! |
I am always envious when I watch a BBC tv show and see how you have the common fields with dogs running off lead. In NY it would be a law suit in an instant! |
We will not let Maggie off-leash here in town (since she LOVES passing cars) unless we are in the fence of the town baseball field and when we are at one of Josh's baseball games at our home field.
If you have the ability to go some where that is large and fenced in, that would be a great way to get the "command" words learned so they can be off-leash at other times. That, and it will also help with your confidence in your dog. As I have been told, it is YOU that needs to be comfortable with the dog and what they do. |
All of mine are off lead trained except Maggie. And she is getting so much better!
People look at me weird when I say that - because bassets and min pins aren't your usual dogs to have off lead. You are right Wendy - a lot of it is the human's mental attitude and expectations, as well as successful training. |
My trainer advised me to get George off the lead when he was little and still keen to stay close. We did this only in areas away from roads and hes been great (except last summer when he used to refuse to come back) but other than that hes been good.
he still has moments of selective hearing but he manages to hear his packet of treat being opened from any distance!! |
