Oliver had to spend five days at boarding kennels as we had to visit family overseas. He had been there once before overnight just to make sure he was ok with it which went fine and the place is highly professional and well recommended. We just got him back and are a bit shocked how skinny he looks. The staff said he had fun and was very lively with the other dogs but that he just picked at his food. We had taken in his usual food for him (Royal Canin dry kibble) but he seemed uninterested in it and eventually they gave him canned food to keep his energy up. Could any kind forum readers advise on how to get his weight back up? He is 8.5 months old and is a big puppy, normally 80lbs plus. I am not sure what he is now though. Would anyone recommend chicken and rice? And is that instead of the kibble or as well as? Don't want to overdo it and bloat him. Maybe I should also add he has always been a picky eater. He will eat but sometimes he is not that bothered. Vet is happy with his build / weight, or would have been before this week anyway ... Many thanks as always. I would just resume his regular schedule of eating and not do anything special yet. If he isn't sick, he should start putting the weight back on once he goes back to eating normally. |
I agree with ButtersStotch a change in scenery may have affected his appatite.return to familliar sorroundings he will go back to similar self in no time. |
I agree. Bailey is like this too - when we take him on vacation, he is too nervous or excited to eat in a strange place. Plus, he gets more exercise on vacation. Once we get home he goes back to his normal eating and nap schedule and puts the weight back on. |
I tend to think just being home and back to his regular routine should do the trick, but if you want him to gain a little more quickly or if you are really concerned, satin balls are said to be great for putting weight back on.
Here is a link to some recipe links for it. http://www.google.com/search?q=satin+ba ... 42,GGGL:en |
The trick is to add the weight slow enough that you aren't adding fat.
You are better off adding a small amount of higher protein food to the normal food amount given every day. |
