Is it a hot spot?

I am positive that somewhere in the forum there must be a thread on Hot Spots... but for the life of me I could not find it!!! 8O

SO I am asking for advice: Baloo has started licking a spot near his stumpy tail and when I took a real close look I see redness and of course it is wet from his licking. That was Friday night... and this morning he seems more intent on messing with it than he did before.

I don't see any scrapes or a cut or obvious bug bite but it is more like a rash looking red area. It obviously itches because he WILL NOT LEAVE IT ALONE!!!! It's about the size of a 50cent piece.

:?: I thought I would give him a good bath and trim the hair around it as best I can and maybe put some anti-itch stuff on it -??- till I can get him into the vet.

Thoughts anyone???? I hate to see him so itchy there that it drives him crazy. (and makes me itch just thinking about it  )

Is it pussy and gooey?

Oliver has only had 1 hot spot, but it was really pussy and gooey.
nope. not at all like that. Just red and rashy looking. no gooey, puss, oozie or nothing.

Just red and itchy.
I think this was a hot spot, they can spread quickly-

Frankie is allergic to fleas. Maybe Baloo is too. If Frankie gets one flea bite he bites like crazy then they turn into scabs, ususally about the size of a fifty cent piece. He has taken antibiotics for this in case of staff infection.
A couple of mega hot spot pictures from my late Lucy. She seasonally suffered from allergies and got very good at hiding her chewing. This spot eluded me until I smelled it. I cut al the hair away and found this underneath. This is what it looks like if the chewing continues beyond just the stage of redness.

It's very unlikely that you can heal up a hot spot on your own. My vet explains that what they really are is a vicous circle of" it itches, dog chews it, when it strats to heal it itches so dog chews it ".......until eventually there is a staph infection. I've been very fortunate with my OES...knock on wood.....no hot spots. But I do remember having them when we had a cockapoo years ago.
We think Darby's start out as injuries... from running through the bushes and ice.

If it's a hot spot, you need a med to control the itching and promote healing and a barrier to prevent the dog from licking like an e-collar/cone (or t-shirt/shorts/socks). But not just a barrier or it leaves the dog suffering. I saw this article and asked for NeoPredef powder this time and it worked wonders-
http://www.vetinfo.com/dencyclopedia/dehotspot.html It has anti-itch, anti inflammatory and antibiotic ingredients. But it's best on weepy wounds so it will stick. I also used an antiseptic shampoo (ChlorhexiDerm) to wash it off every day or two... I'd blow dry her foot, then apply the powder again and put a sock on it.

I've never tried this e-collar so I can't say how well it works but this is place makes a soft cone if you're tired of the plastic ones. http://www.allfourpaws.com/
Thanks for all the replies guys.... I believe it IS a hot spot and I will get him into the Vet ASAP to get something to help him...

I took a couple pics of it after his bath today. I tried to trim the hair on it as much as I dared (I was by myself and he kept trying to turn around and nibble or sit down while I was doing it). Washed it, dried it very well -- course he's licked it many times since then so it's all wet again...

as soon as they are approved I will post into here.
Ok Ya'll.... Here is Baloo's Bum...

If I am correct -- this is a hot spot, right?? This is my first time with one, so I am a little concerned.

Yep a hot spot boo has had lots of these
When Oliver had his hot spot on his back, we cut the hair, washed it the hot spot, put triple antibiotic ointment on it, and he wore shorts for about 4 days. We watched it very closely, didn't let him play with other dogs, and blow dryed it every time it looked wet. He didn't have to be on any medicine.
Yep, it looks like a hot spot.
If you can catch them early, you can sometimes not need a visit to the vet. But, usually it needs a shave, a topical med and sometime oral ABX. The last one my old girl Macy had, she was on cephalexin as well as a short course of prednisone. Macy is my hot spot queen. :(
Baloo had his visit to the Doc today. He is the proud sporter of his first real Hot Spot-- Just like we all thought.

The vet said she feels we got it early because it was relatively dry and not oozy or goopy... just red and itchy.

He's got cephalexin and a little prednisone for the itching. Should be all good in a few days.

Wendy... looks like Baloo takes after his daddy more than not... The vet seems to think he's uber sensative to fleas, Thinks that he maybe had a flea bite (though can't see any fleas on him at all) and this one bite set him off on an itching spree.

Give Frankie a hug from us and tell him Baloo says... "Thanks, Pop!"
I hope Baloo gets over his itchys soon. Poor baby is just too sensitive. Just like Frank. We never see fleas here either. My hubby is even more allergic than Frankie.
Hot spot for sure. A couple of things I have used in the past.

A Daisy gets alergies late in the summer and so I will use baby benadryl on her with a dropper, I give her about a 1/4 tsp in the am and pm. this is the only thing that works for her.

B Tyler got horrible hot spots and food with corn in it was the culprit and once I got him off of corn based foods the hot spots went away.

C Bag Balm - it is an emoilent, and has antibiotic properties, it aids in healing, it must taste bad or it's soothing cause they stop the licking/chewing

those are my three that I use. I have not found any of the sprays to work and I think getting to the bottom of the issue is best.

:ghug: Hope he gets well quickly!
Morning All:

Thanks for all the tips and well wishes for Baloo's bum. He is doing great. He has completed his meds, all the redness is gone, scabs have fallen off, and he hasn't paid any attention to that area in a few days.

His hair is growing back in nicely.... but it is coming in an odd reddish brownish color instead of black or gray....

Is this normal? will he always have that brownie spot there now? I could care less-- he's still my sweetie-- I just wondered if this had happened to anyone before as well.
Hope Baloo feels better soon. Our first OES used to get
hot spots because he was very allergic to flea bites.

Hope the medication makes him feel more comfortable
and the spot heals soon.

:ghug: to Baloo :ghug:
